so yesterday, what was suppose to be a day of just taking the trim off my car, prepping for decals. what we (me and drRodey) found is that i need a new power steering rack, oil pan gasket, and front and rear gasket valves...

after finding out all that, i needed to escape, so i went fishing. i was quite happy with the results.

Ottertail has been on all summer long! I would head there if your heading to that area. right on the edge of the breaks in 9 to 12 feet of water jigs or pulling cranks and going fast about 1 mph to 2 mph good luck! If you want to stay in our area we have been catching a good number of fish!

Here is my report for the area. With the cooling temperatures the walleye fishing has picked up in the alexandria and should be getting into the fall bite soon. With that said the water temperatures are in the mid to low 60s and should be colling even more with the cold weather that we are having.

Walleyes in the area are still in the weeds for the most part. The best depth is either going to be on the inside weed edge from like 5 to 8 feet of water or the outside weed edge which on our lakes in the area is from 15 to 21 feet of water. Some fish are starting to move alittle deeper and are being caught in the 21 to 24 foot range. For the most part the walleyes have switched back over to minnows fatheads, suckers, shiners, or big redtails. Most people and myself are using jigs and or some sort of lindy rigs. One other technique that should really shoot off soon and has been doing well all summer but the fall trolling bite after dark! One of the best times of the year to catch huge fish on cranks. look in the 5 to 11 foot range trolling on the inside weededge of over the tops of the weeds for your best luck. For walleyes this time of year I like to go fast roughly 1 mph alittle slower and alittle faster depending on the fish that day

Crappies and sunfish have slowed some but overall people are catching a good number of crappies in the 12 to 14 foot range with twister tails tipped with minnows or nothing at all. The best colors have been either white, black or pink! With that being said the later and colder it gets the more the crappies and panfish should move to the green weeds. If you can get and find green weeds that is where the fish will be.

For northerns sucker minnows with hair jigs well do you best. look in the weeds in roughly 7 to 18 feet swim your jig over the tops and in the weeds and you will catch some fish. Bright colored hair jigs or black seem to work best.

If people have any questions or concerns please feel free to post questions on here or email me at anytime!

With the fall Fishing I also wanted to make a quick point to make sure and not fish in deep water. Anyone can go into that deep water and catch little fish all day. I urge you not to do that for the safety of the fisheries. If you truly want to catch big fish in the fall go shallow trust me the colder it gets the shallower I move and the bigger the fish. Good luck to all those heading out.

Here are just a few pictures from the past couple weeks:

As many of you know if you have the touch that day you have the touch Matt caught 3 fish over 22.5 inches! Along with a few other clients other days with big fish!

Hit the water at about 12:30 today. Flat calm gorgeous day. By 2:00 our scoop of fatheads was pretty much gone and my 5 year old had 4 of the 6 we kept in the box. What a great day. You have to love fall fishing in the Alex area.

Fished Ida and Miltona this last weekend. Water temps were around 57-58 deg. I think the warm weather has confused the walleyes. They should be bulking up but we only found a few smaller fish in deeper water (30-35 fow). 2 small ones Sat on Ida, and 6 Sun on Miltona but most were around 13in. Nice to be out but bring on the cold weather. Talk to some other fisherman who found the same...small fish. Hope the rest of you had better luck.

Well guys the Fall bite has been unreal around the alexandria area. I find it amazing that any lake that you go to and fish has good numbers of fish in the fall and good size. I have fished 6 different lakes in the area and caught walleyes on every one of them. The best depth has ranged some but overall the best depth has been 16 to 24 feet of water. Then as the sun goes down or if your out in the morning go shallow. Some of the best walleyes have come in 4 to 9 feet of water. If you find good green weeds your going to catch fish. The best presentation has been a jig and a minnow. My best color ranges everyday but some sort of chart or white has been good. All of these are tipped with live bait. I have used some plastics but just dont have enough confidence in it to fish it consistantly when people are catching 3 to 1 versus me. If we are going after bigger fish we have used bigger redtails and they sure work well around this time!! Most of the lakes have turned over. Hopefully we can get a even bigger one here one of these days. We have had a few more on that have gotten off that we have seen and are bigger but thats fishing!

Here are just a few pictures from the past week to 10 days:

Nate with a 23 and 1/2 incher almost the identical fish both caught about 15 minutes apart.

Put the small house out on geneva last night. There was a good 10" of ice. Had been catching some nice eyes were I had been walking out, hopefully they will be were the house is now. If we don't end up getting to much snow tonight/tommorrow I will be putting the big house out Sunday.

Anybody having any luck on Le Homme Dieu? I fished yesterday and didn't have much luck. Looking for panfish or walleyes, whichever will bite. Thanks

Fished Le Homme Dieu Fri-Sun. A few small sunnies and 1 tiny walleye was all. Lots of small eyes biting out there, 6-8 inchers. Ice was in great shape 12+ inches, can drive anywhere.

So we aren't the only ones besieged by tiny walleyes on Le Homme Dieu. Poor things must be starving. Sad to say I saw a two man limit leaving the ice yesterday, biggest walleye was 10" MAYBE.

Christmas you know, nice to say you got a limit while you were home.

I'm from the southern part of Minnesota around the Mankato area. We are dealing with the issue of a lot of slush and water on top of the ice. Not able to pull our house out have to walk out if you want to fish. So i was wondering how good the ice is around Alex? Would i be able to drive out pulling a pretty good sized permanent house?

Mihcael,

Was out this morning and there is about 6-8 of snow with good ice. I would be careful out there if there is no plowed roads.

Welcome to MF, glad to have you here.

Just an fyi to everybody the ice on all area lakes is not even in the last week we have came across a few spots that are only around 9in while 50 yds away you have 14. These samples were taken from lake miltona.Today a fullsize truck dropped in the whole passenger side in and they were lucky to get it out without any harm only thing is the truck doesn't want to run. There is allot of water on the ice so everybody be careful.

A truck went through on Miltona today?? Down by me the rain knocked down most of the ice and then slush froze up. Did you guys not get the rain up there? Still lots of snow and slush on the lakes? Around saint cloud you can go just about anywhere with a wheeler.

Yep a truck partialy went down today he was on the way to check his house out I was told. Pretty tough moving around out there all slush under the snow many 4 wheel drives getting stuck. I got lucky and pulled my house the day before the storm. Good luck to all and be safe.

Got lucky and blocked up my house on Osakis friday as the rain/slush went over my first set of 4x4 blocks.

Now the water/slush is 2" up on the new set of 4x4 blocks when I left yesterday afternoon.

So now the house is 8" above the ice from the fisrt time I set the house on the ice with only 2" to go before I have to re-block it.

Was going to move my house today but there was so much water and slush in the area I wanted to put it I said forget it. Have to find a different spot. Drove through several areas that the slush and water was pretty deep. Glad I was in the Polaris Ranger and not my truck. Don't think the truck would have made it.

It took me an hour to knock the frozen slush off from under my truck as the slush built up and made the truck one big ice block.

The transmission linkage froze and the wheels were totally locked in place.

Hope this below zero temps freeze this slop. mad

hey everyone! long time no talk!

been quite busy lately. so i havent been able to get on. i have been doing quite a bit of fishing since the ice was barely thick enough to walk on

been on a pretty consistant bite of 10-11" crappie. with an average of 1 or 2 pike a day. and a nice walleye every few days.

doug, my stepdad's dad, caught a 29"er one night. the biggest of mine so far is 18. but it seems the big walleyes always bite when im working frown

but anyway here is a pic of early ice. back when the lake just froze over.

My father, cousin and I are heading up that way for the weekend. looking for a list of lakes that are somewhat easily accessible. not looking for secret hot spots, just an idea of what is fish-able, or drive-able as we are not from the area. We are more than likely starting on Minnewaska, other lakes of interest we have are Mary, Reno, Ida and Miltona.

Thank-you greatly in advance for any info.

I would say that Minnawaska will be a sure bet for driving and catching fish. There is a lot of lakes that had good plowed roads, and now they are not so good.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
