I am going up to Arnesen's in mid-January and was trying to find some extra large shiners or maybe some chubs. Something much bigger than a fathead but not a huge muskie sucker. Last year all I could find were fatheads and huge suckers, does anyone know of a bait shop around there that would carry extra large shiners or smaller suckers/chubs? Looking for a tip-up bait that isn't too big for larger walleyes but might entice a large pike. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thank you,

Greg

Check with riverside bait in Warroad. I know they have frozen most of the time. There was a shiner shortage last year, but i am sure they have some by now.

I dont think you're going to find much along the lines of what you are thinking up here. Basically your going to find mostly what i would call "normal" size minnows in the fathead/chub, live shiner, rainbow, frozen shiner's. I think what your looking for is something along the lines of the larger Spot tail shiner's that they use down in the central and southern lakes like Leech. My advice if you are hoping to tie into a northern while your walleye fishing would be just to dedicate one of your lines to a tried and true northern rig and fish eye's out of your other hole (space them a ways apart if possible). In my expereience if you try to do both at the same time you might be in for a long day. The fish have been rather finicky the past 3 weeks, they are very ruluctant on even small baits on jigging set-ups so Im thinking a large bait will be kind of sketchy. Northerns might not care but the smaller eater size walleye's arent going to like it. If your after northerns..target northerns same goes for eye's. Good Luck!

Thanks guys that's kind of what I was expecting. I usually run large golden shiners on tip ups in northern Wisconsin for pike and occasional walleye and bass. I can run some suckers for pike I guess they just seemed really big for tip ups.

So if I am heading up mid January to Zippel Bay, am I pretty much hosed? I'd love to get some shiners for once. Any place in Baudette that would have them still?

I'll have live emeralds for awhile yet, also fatheads and rainbows. Steve@logcabinbait

I fished out of one of Arnesen's house's about 3 year's ago! They furnished the bait and what bait it was! The largest fathead's I've ever seen! I'm not exaggerating at all when I say they were huge! I don't know where they got them. Maybe they raised themselve's! If you stop in to see Steve at Log Cabin Bait, ask him if he has any rainbow chub's. Sometime's he will have some that are pretty good sized. They are an excellent minnow! Super lively so you don't have to keep jigging them! Good luck and Merry Christmas! grin1DIRTBALL wink

In those years Polaris was known to put buna tipped needles in there sleds. They get a ring around the seat and don't seal shut. But if that would be the case your problem would be with the motor shut off and filling the crankcase with gas. If your plugs are brown that is were they should be. I wouldn't drop that needle down to the last grove. I would replace them before I did that. I have never had a carb with that setting. Have you looked at your clutches? They could be dirty or have a bad roller.  Does it bog as it's accelerating or when you hit the throttle?

but if he really wants I can change the date..

As soon as I started reading mind went to needles and seats.  You might want to try just replacing those first?  I’ve only done that once before in my life but it made the difference.  A carb refresh in 8,000 miles seems reasonable.

Good luck smurfy!  On getting drawn, I mean!   If it comes down to it, I know a guy that might be interested in a nice hide.

My 30 year-old Indy 500 (over 8,000 miles) has been having a mid-range bog for many years now.  It is worse on warm days and when the engine is warmer.  The sled runs fine up to about 1/4 throttle, then runs extremely rich up to 3/4 throttle.  The spark plugs are dark brown (better brown than down?) but not saturated.  8 years ago I moved the clips on the jet needles from the 3rd to the 2nd groove to lean the mixture and it helped for a while.   Should I move the clips to the top groove (temporary solution)? Could the jet needles, needle jets, and/or the main jets be warn and need replacement?   Don't think I will have time to tear the carbs apart this season for a rebuild so I may just band-aid the problem.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.
