Well @river rat316 I could show you that I put all new line on all my ice rods but I do not want to rub it in that I am ready for ice fishing now.

Looking at the temps and it is not showing signs of making ice fast, so it could be the middle to the end of December before I am ice fishing this year. I wish one big cold snap would come and lock up the lakes with 5-6 inches of nice solid ice.

I have a couple special lakes on my list of ones to hit this winter. I will need to make sure to have someone with a rope with me. My wife keeps telling me to get more of my gear ready, because she is sure that is why it is still so warm out. Last year I was racing to get my gear ready as it was already making ice.

Anyone see any new jigs or plastics that they think will be the ticket this winter?

I had some time to waste this morning, so I hit a couple stores in St. Cloud. At one point I had 2 new rod and reel combos in my hand, some more plastics, and jigs. I ended up with a bag of almonds and water. I do not need any more ice fishing gear, so I put it back. I can say that not having ice has helped my grades out.  I will be on the search for monster bluegills once I find 5 inches or more of ice.

Good Luck and be safe!!

Just sitting here going over all my rods changing jigs. If it would just make 6 inches of ice I would be happier than a fat kid at a candy shop that is having free sample day.

I wish I could say that I am completely ready , But I am not. I picked up some tungsten and replaced a few reels when I was at the St. Paul Ice Show and just haven't had time to install the reels or put the tackle in its box. But with this weather I think I have a few more weeks before I will be heading out. Fish well my Friend and please keep us updated on ice conditions and what you are catching !  Mike

Well today the lake let me know I am not as good as I thought. I got skunked yep a big fat zero. I marked some fish but nothing was making em bit for me. I made the lake look like swiss cheese and could not find the big schools I had yesterday.  I am going to ponder this for tonight and come up with another game plan for tomorrow.

I think I figured it. I just needed more time to fish, but I can't leave Finn for very long. 14-17 feet of water on the edge of a weedline and bingo. The snitch was working great for detecting the bites of bluegills, but the crappies were smacking it. No monstergills but some 8 inchers and few up to 9.25. I did not take lots of photos as people were starting to come out in big numbers and did not want a crowd.

I am glad that you guys got together as it sounds like everyone had fun. I had to entertain my brother in law and found that the baxter area ice is sketchy at best. found 3 - 6 inches at best. Did well on Red Though

it was the best bite I have been on this year! There was 5 of us in total I know three of them together caught around 20 good gills and a few crappies. Myself and my brother shared a shack and we caught over 40 big gills between the two of us. Kept enough for a couple fresh fish meals. I am going back out there this morning after work in hopes of some nice crappies be on the lake in less than 5 hours. Hope somethin bites in the dark haha.

if anyone is up and available hit me up so we can meet up. I dont mind having company in the house but i also dont wait for people. So if ur available and want to go message me. I do not however promise u will catch em but I'm gonna do my best thats for sure lol

Seeing I am working again!!:D I am stuck being a weekend warrior :( also Finn makes it hard to get out on the ice seeing the wife does not like it when I leave her with the 3 dogs. The cold weather also kept me the house this weekend. Looking at the weather reports next weekend I will be going out fishing. I am thinking of hitting some lakes that are known to winter kill in search of some Monster Bluegills. I am thinking I will leave Finn at home seeing he likes to get in the way yet.

I am thinking of heading west this weekend to find some big gills. I am getting excited to fish lakes that have gills over 11 inches in them.

Posted

GOOOD  LUCK  finding those 11 inchers. Have been out a couple of times this week- after sunnies and crappies- not much to show for my effirts. will likely get the urge later this afternoon., supposed to be close to 40 deg. Went back to using a 4-wheeler.. The ice thickness varies considerably from lake to lake. 15 pluss on Martin, less than 11 on Little Stanchfield,  Guys that I talked too out on the lake also said the same thing about the lakes they had been on. This could be a bad weekend for vehicles on the lakes, and I am sure there will be a lot of them out there.

Hopefully I will be able to post a "picture" with some fish.

Good Luck and be safe

@monstermoose78 - Going to be a great day to be mobile as it will be warm ... might be crazy busy :(  I was out on Blue last night and people pulling out houses before the slush.  The landing on North end was already getting grooved from sun.  The landing could be rough by Saturday afternoon.   I'm taking my house off tonight.

Hello it has been a while!! Been busy with the new job, Finn, and that honey due list. I needed to relax and to that I need some alone time watching my thill float sink. I was using half of small leeches on a jig head in yellow or pink. I do not know how many I caught but my hand wrinkled from the slim. I got couple 9 s most were between 6-8 inches. No I did not keep any but I wish would brought a cooler with to keep a few maybe next.

Ok the ice was 15-16 inches and less than 2 inches of snow. It’s was -15 this morning and the weekend looks to be cold again. The fish were there but not biting with change in weather.

I guess the vikings are a lot like fishing.  Very entertaining but frustrating at times. I've probably been cheering the vikings for 50 plus years  that i can remember and once again it's all about (there's always next year).

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is going great on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters reporting thickening ice conditions with two feet of ice in some areas.  Many ice roads are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Some good fishing this past week.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 28 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts do just about everything they can to get customers on fish and this past week, some resorts made some long runs, resetting fish houses in new areas miles off shore.  Most are reporting good fishing as a rule.     It is common to sort through some small walleyes and saugers to get your keepers on LOW.  Naturally, some big fish are showing up, especially in deeper water.  In addition, this has been a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.      Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole. In the jigging hole, a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail in gold / pink, gold / glow red, glow white / pink, or Wonder Bread have worked well.     Especially in the deeper water, some anglers are finding success on rippin raps or using jigging spoons with a rattle as well.     On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well.  One day the jigging line catches most of the fish, the other day a deadstick is hot.     Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts have fish houses set up on various pieces of structure as well as adjacent to structure in deep mud.  A consistent mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees in the mix.     Shallow structure is best right away in the morning and as the sun starts going down in the late afternoon.  Mud is more of a slower bite but all day.   The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts (as of this past week) was open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.  Venmo is also available at all resorts.  Work through your resort for specifics.   Ice fishing is in full swing across Lake of the Woods and there are openings for lodging, fish house rentals, sleeper fish house rentals and meal plans across the area.  Ice fishing is extended on LOW with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st, walleye / sauger season open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes.

From your fingertips to God's ears...  Finally got some snow!   Several inches of new snow fell before and during the weekend.  Sunday eve when we left, the high winds had already begun to create some drifting on the lake.  It was fun riding for sure.  Lots of folks on the lake this past weekend too.  We fueled up the sleds at Shamrock and saw as many people fishing in that area as I've ever seen in the Winter on Lake Vermilion.     Our weekend results were decent.  Jeff and I and a buddy caught probably 50 walleyes between the three of us, mostly fishing a jig/plastics with our three biggest being 24", 25", and 25.5".  We also got one large pike of unknown length.  During the midday on Sunday, we targeted whitefish and Jeff managed one big one.  We released all of our fish, except for three small walleyes that our buddy wanted to bring home for a meal.  Definitely a fun weekend on Lake V!

The Vikings are the Vikings so it's nothing new.  It is kind of sad that Darnold's off season stock is now going to drop like a rock after these last two games. It kind of shows he's not a big game guy.  🤔
    • smurfy
I'm blaming leech... his food selection has been lacking game days recently  🤣
