Can't believe no one on here is talking about Mille lacs. I'm planning on spearing it this weekend. Anyone else heading up?

I think it's gonna be wild too. But not until people can drive wheelers out there. Hoping it's not too wild this weekend.

Dead sea where I was in walkon bay, I saw a huge bass and some small perch. Clarity was a bit cloudy but I could see bottom in about 8 feet of water. My friend that I was with speared a a 25 inch and saw one smaller.

A few people we talked to said they had been in cove bay and the clarity was as not good. As far as where to setup I would look for a weed line point with a drop off to deeper water.

Also please everyone PUSH YOUR BLOCKS BACK IN AND MARK YOUR HOLES. I had to mark some open holes were people just pushed their blocks under and walked away without marking them.

Ice in my hole was 11 inches of frozen slush not good ice at all. People were driving side by side rangers and wheeler even some wheel houses but I wouldn't trust that junk ice. Where the ice is crystal clear good ice it was 8 inches.

It will also be crowded there tomorrow, isle bay didn't look to busy and walkon had 20 house's in the area I was at.

Everywhere I was the ice was safe for walking, but check for yourself as you go. Isle bay public access has the creek right there so I don't know how thick the ice was.

Mille Lacs will keep the darkhouse spearing pressure low on many other lakes this year.

I may go once or twice but I am thinking it is gonna be crazy out there.

I'm going out of chapman's for 5 bucks. Don't like where the public access is on Isle Bay.

I think that's a great idea.

Let's put a few bucks in the area business's pockets. It will help promote the great sport of spear fishing.

Hoping to start in Isle bay, we muskie fished a lot this summer and always hooked into northern in that bay.

I gotta get all the spearing in I can this winter, next winter my husband and I will have a little one so fishing in general will be far and in between next summer and winter.

well i had to go try it. headed out just after 8 on wednesday morning. saw one about 15 at 10:30 and then a huge musky right at noon. the musky hung around for a good 10minutes. not a fish after that.

thurs i had the decoys in by 8:00 and saw two small fish before 9:00. another one in the lower teens came through about 9:30, and then another musky about 10:00. this musky was only about 5lbs and came in to the decoy 5 different times. i think he hung around the rest of the day as this was the last fish i saw. speared until about 4:00. i was anxious before getting out there, this trip only put fuel on the fire. 10-11" of ice.

unsure of what the dnr has in mind with the new regulations, but seeing 10 fish under 30" isn't going to happen very often, at least until March. please be sure of your targets, this is an awesome opportunity we have as spearfishermen. throwing at off species will shut this off as fast as it was opened. i would reccomend other lakes to the unexperienced, or at least go with someone with experience.

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.

Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.

Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
