Yes there is. Found 2 boxes in st cloud last week with those being 59 grain. Not real suitable for deer. Had trouble last year too. Many ammo companies are cutting back.

People need to be buying his stuff in non-peak season and you wont have that problem.

The ammo "shortage" has been going on a few years anyway... nothing new.

We had scope problem with the kids rifle and burned up most of our supply correcting it. Sometimes you wind up shooting more than one shell during the season. Thanks for the advice though.

I looked in small and big shops from Outing to the north metro and was amazed to see only the 243's out of stock. The store cashiers all said they were selling a ton of that caliber in particular. Heck, 2 Fleet Farms were completely out while having plenty of other stuff on hand. I met two different people looking for them when I was too.

Just thought I'd share the tip for others looking. Going back to my imperfect world now...

I haven't seen more than a couple boxes of 243 rounds regardless of when I looked. To top it off they were varmit rounds at that.

I guess I picked the wrong round for my son to start rifle hunting with. I was able to trade a guy a box of 80 grain for 100 grain so that will last him years but still frustrating.

Very short supply here to. I can reload, but it's making me wonder if I should be buying as much brass for 243 I can find right now. My wife shoots a lot of Win PP ammo for practice and I save the brass, but it's been almost obsolete for two years. We've been buying the 80 gr just because it's all we can find here and there. Not sure why you can get 30-30, 30-06, 270, 7mm's, 300's, etc but no 243?????

Last year 243 was in real short supply to non existant in ND, not sure about this year. It is a real popular deer caliber out here.

Are there a lot of AR's chambered for 243?

I'm not really into ARs but I don't recall hearing that as a normal round for em. FF had plenty other small caliber center fires; there was just a big void when you came to the 243 stack. We're thinking it's just the most popular round for youth and possibly women hunters who happen to be making up most of the new hunter ranks these days.

Maybe there's something about production too but I know the demand is high.

Hunters are also getting older. Maybe they are buying lighter guns with less recoil?

Conspiracy theory. Really no reason for ammo shortages. There is a reason $$$.

I did a job at ATK you wouldn't believe the ammo sitting in that warehouse, its like a 3 block by 4 block building stacked floor to ceiling with every caliber caliber you can think of.

Some of the manufactors{sp} admitted to not even running some lines at the factory,thus they said they can keep the profit margins higher while creating a demand,thus higher shell prices.

I checked with a large retailer with some questions pertaining to 243 shortage here was his response... "In the last two months we've gotten in around 100 rounds of .243 and 20,000 rounds of .223, .223 is definitely taking priority in production."

I have read that hornady has dropped production completely of certain rounds and many 243 types were on the list. Apparently the ammo companies are focussing on rounds that have the highest demand. 243 is a common hunting round but a round 223 is a far more common round overall so rather than switching over to make 243 they are focussing on 223 since they sell everything they make there which is more than 243 to begin with.

Happened to be on the Cabelas HSOforum and they seem to have plenty of .243 ammo (95-100 grain) available. Might want to stock up for the future.

I was at Cabelas in Rogers today and absolutely no shortage on ammo of any caliber on the shelves.

For 243 they had all the different bullet weights and brands.

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
