So has anyone purchased their Mn shelter license for this season yet? I'm curious to find out if the state of Mn has come up with a license that you can read after it has been on the house for 30 days.

I concur in your observation. I sent DNR an e-mail about this a year ago and got no reply. I surely would not buy a 3 year license. I suspect the CO's pay little attention to the displayed license and rather call in the numbers on the house to see if the registration is current. Not sure of how that would work with houses that display name and address, maye the same.

MY house license is hardly legible but I do have my DNR number on the door in the suggested size.

That will have to be good enough until they can print a license that one can read after 30 days or so.

I was just thinking about this the other day. What if the DNR had a life time licence plate, kind like the custom fishing mn licence plate for your car or truck. It could have a ice fishing theme and would also be a nice big reflector. The state is always looking to make more $. I hate every year pulling off all the packing tape that I used to tape up tag in the inside window and taping up the new one. Like said above, you can't even read it towards the end of the season.

Just a side note. I was reading the regs the other day and I didn't realize you dont even need your name,address or dnr number on your house as long as your within 200 feet. I'm sure if you spent the night in it you would need it long with a shelter tag.

The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesota waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.

•

All shelters, except for occupied* portable shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the (1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height. *A person using a portable shelter on the ice that does not display identification must remain within 200’ of the shelter.

A shelter may not be left unoccupied or unattended anytime between midnight and one hour prior to sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.

Note: The Minnesota Dept. of Public Safety–DVS requires trailers used to haul fish houses or dark houses and enclosed trailers or recreational trailers used for fishing to be registered. See your local Deputy Registrar for trailer registration.

•

A tag, furnished with a license, must be attached to the exterior in a readily visible location.

•

Shelters left on the ice overnight need to have at least 2 square inches of reflective material on each side of the house.

They used to give you a little round metal tag with a number stamped on it that was attached to the exterior of the house and the paper copy was supposed to be kept inside the house. There was never any problem with that. But then I suppose it would cost them an extra ten cents.

The deer hunting tag was similar: a metal strap that locked together. That never came off even dragging the deer through the woods. They dropped that too; now you have to remember to have string with you.

I agree I have thought that they could issue a "plate" (like a vehicle license plate) and you could get a registration sticker on a annual or tri year basis to keep it current

Are wheel houses considered portable? What exactly do you need if you never leave your house unattended on the ice?

The way I am reading it - if you are within 200' you do not need anything. As with many DNR rules it a judgement call by the CO that you can dispute in court but if a CO tried to say your wheel house is not portable - I'd politely ask what is not portable about a trailer on wheels hooked to my truck.

With all the $$ I have invested in winter fishing equipment, always figured for 15 bucks I can put a tag and a dnr number on any house I am using, just my 2 cents.

I sure would not give DNR any more money for a license you already paid for, the problem is theirs, not yours. A CO can call in your DNR number or name and address and verify your license is current even if he can't read it.

Don't worry about it. I buy the three year tag for my perm and after a year you can't read it….never had a problem. They will just look up your DNR number and check it that way, I would guess.

      i cant help you with the weed thing, but i just came back form out that way......Regal, New London Hawick area. i dont no how big the swat of rain was but there is water standing everywhere. my buddy told me they had over 3 inches of rain yesterday/last night

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
