boars bear hunting year end review

Boar

Recommended Posts

Boy ben along time since ive have not gotten a bear. But cant get then everytime. been a goofy year, although ive had opportunities that have eluded me, there should have been some dead bear. late spring was a factor for sure s naturals hit right around mid baiting for me and acorns droped in the first week of hunting adding more complications to the mix. Im extreamly pleased how the year went, had six out 7 sites with a couple of good freinds that where hot at one time or another but timing was just off. As funny as thie season was my own selfseason was tougher. heres some highlights of bears still walking around in Boars head

Mr Pig is another fave of mine, just a fat glutten, the bear on this site I tend to feel were a case of bait burn out, they ust stoped showing up with no ryme or reason. even with naturals theyd still visit but just vanished like bear do. full-2178-50038-pict0047.jpg

Just a few of the bear on site this past year. as time passed and opportunities missed i just stoped up loading pics to the computer. I have a bunch more but think theyve been erased when swapping cards. Hope all you had a great season, I did, always and thrill and, headscratcher and privilage. on to icefishing.

These late springs sure do make it tuff with the naturals that is for sure. Took until mid September for me to get any consistent hits. Then it was multiple bears on a bait. My step daughter had here opportunity at a nice bear, but something happen when she shot. long story short, no bear to be found and the bear has a battle scar to remind him to hit the baits after dark.

This is the bear

Well we have 3 points in our group so we better get drawn next year. It's all I think about. I have never got a bear so I'm hoping next year is the ticket.

We had an off year as well, 6 hunters and no bear. we had a lot of logging going on in our area, some of which was very close to our bait sites. Berries and acorns dropping opening weekend sure didn't help either. Only one hunter saw a bear and that was just this past Saturday night. Did not get a shot, as she was using a bow and there aint much for cover out there right now. Guess there is always next year!!

Those are some nice looking bears Boar. Too bad you didn't get to do the crossbow on one of them. Say you didn't change your Boar's Bear Bait Gumbo recipe did you? I wouldn't think they could resist that. Thanks for the pics.

Boar, I have never hunted bear before but because of you posts etc you have me intrigued. Even a year without a harvest I can tell you had a blast. Lots of fun but I am sure a ton of work. Thanks for sharing!

this was my first year and the best part was baiting! yea i got a bear and that was a blast! but baiting is what has me addictive! seeing logs everywhere... then checking trail cameras is prob the best thing in the world. I know guides in MN do not make a lot but i can see why they want to bait for other people!!!

yea there is nothing like walking up to a bait and seeing logs thrown all over. but yet nothing more annoying or aggravating to see your small hole turned into a large hole from critters digging under them logs to steal the picinic basket for yogi!

and BOAR.... you never mind!! grinwinkwhistlewhistle

Gee. I just happen to be working on batches of Boar gumbo at this time for next year. Been getting some goodies from the grocery store lately. Already got one barrel full. Ready to start the 2nd one.

Yup the baiting and getting a bear on cam is quite a thrill. My wife sets up the cam while I set the baits. We love it. Also get to see lots of other critters. Shooting the bear is only a small part of the whole adventure.

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Think the Free crawlers in the back yard are going to take a hit this summer! 🤭

Correction, rainbow minnows are at least 75 cents each, and leeches are $60 per pound. lol

Their coming! Was poking around southern center mn last Friday and found about 20 on a hill side, all to small to pick yet.  Spots on the GPS! 🤗

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow
