How Many Shots Do I Get!??

Recommended Posts

Now the waterfowl season is off again it might be an appropriate time to remind those who have overlooked it, there is a requirement that all shotguns used in waterfowl hunting should be limited to THREE shots.

Over the weekend I "witnessed" at least TWO instances of people with semi-autos blazing away a full FIVE rounds in seconds. More than once from a couple locations.

If you know some new hunter who is unaware of this regulation please help them understand it. If you know about it and don't think it applies to you may Great Blue Heron God deposit a full load down the back of your neck and into the top of your boots.

So there.

I'm not arguing with the law or saying we should be allowed to blaze away, but does anyone know the logic behind the 3 shot limit?

Ufatz I thought you said you didn't see any ducks on opener? What were these other groups blazing away at?

I think you need to get your stories straight.

The 3 shot limit is to minimize wounded birds. It keeps people from taking Hail Mary followup shots.

Most guys know what they're doing & break the law on purpose, but I know it is sometimes an honest mistake. For example, I hunted an entire pheasant season in NoDak without a plug in my gun. I had hunted grouse my whole life where you're allowed as many shells as you want but apparently NoDak is different. Thankfully it was a buddy that corrected me & not a CO.

Wrong on the crippling talk. Its because way back when when pumps and autos first came out a bunch of rich guys with Parkers thought, "By Jove, these punks with their 7-12 shots are killing all the ducks. We don't think that's fair. To us we mean, it's not fair to us." Another returned, "Indubitably." So lo and behold, rich guys got together and made another law, because that's how it works in America. So now we got plugs and no one uses doubles. Well, not many.

NoDak works to simplify their rules and regs to avoid potential problems with hunters in the field. Plug in, plug out ...

NoDak also has all their bird seasons run 1/2 before sunrise to sunset. Same rationale.

Long time ago there was some talk of going all steel shot, but that one could not get enough support or traction.

Fowlski. I did not SEE any ducks, but I can still HEAR. And what I heard was a couple guys shooting unplugged guns. Probably the same type of smart adzzed know-it-alls giving me grief about my post. Same attitude.

I truly think there may be people who DON'T get the word on some of the simple regs. Read some of the posts you see in here about "first time" and "new to duck hunting" and the like.

THAT was the intent of my little lecture....not to offend any of the wizened and wise old duck shooters gathered here.

To be sure, if I KNEW the precise location of a shooter using illegal

methods-of any kind-I have TIP on speed dial. I do not like game law violators.

So you cant see chit, so you just assume its one guy blazing. Could it be two guys shooting and what you HEARD was COMPLETELY legal?

Seems about right to me. I know when I'm out hunting I don't sit and listen to the sound of guns so I can try to determine if everyone has their plugs in.

So you couldn't see the hunters but you knew how many there were and how many shots each fired? Do you know how many ducks they shot or even if they were shooting ducks?

So how did we end up with 1 rod open water and 2 hard water?

smile

Used to be one all the time. Then the tip-up lobby paid off the legislature.

Okay boys....I get it : I can't see and I can't hear and my reminders regarding shooting regs and practices are actually lectures. Ha Ha Ha!

I will try to do better in the future. And you boys might consider a couple of mood sweeteners today to improve your dispositions. Hey! It's fall.....OUR favorite time of year! Get out there and enjoy it and quit picking on older wiser more experienced guys just to be nasty!

I have no idea. MN has lots of crazy laws. One rod, mandated beer gas, can't shoot politicians except in self defense, the list is endless. My pickup doesn't like your MN 20 proof.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
