Hey Guys

This is my 1st fall fishing down here in Still water,

I was wondering where to get on some Shad down here from my boat or could fish from shore,

I'm heading down to the Powerplant now to try there

Thanks

Long story short, you can't buy it anywhere and they are illegal to catch with a throw net and good luck catching them with any legal ways (dip net or seine).

Thanks Guys'

I was kinda looking for bait and spot ideas, I see them a lot when they are feeding or getting chased I read somewhere maggots and wax worms seem to work well as a bait

I have done well up north on cut Carp and Fathead minnows But the flooding this spring I had a hell of a time finding them( The Carp) so I don't have any in the freezer

Down here they don't really bite on them as well....SHEEPHEADS do tho

I just thought I'd toss it out there to see if any of you were catching them.

And if you would share with a newbie down here

Well, if you are talking about catching Shad, you probably won't be able to. They are algae eaters and most are too small to catch anyways.

You might be referring to Mooneye which can be caught on the Croix. They sort of look like a shad, but are quite a bit bigger and will eat small things such as maggots and worms.

Also, using cut carp is illegal in MN.

Thanks for the info DTRO

Your right I was thinking Mooneye and typing Shad

I should Clarify

The carp/ suckers get ground up after I take the useable meat off of them some gets fed to the chickens and some gets mixed with chicken livers for Cat fishing

I didn't think that was Illegal...Guess I won't be using that anymore

Thats a pretty fine line on the ground carp. I don't think you'll get much fight out of a co if you are using chicken food. Just make sure you aren't chumming. Also illegal in mn.

Thanks guys

No Chumming, just what leaks out of the hook bags, which isn't much,

So where down here ( Still water area )is the best place to buy live bait?

Cut suckers has been preferred in my boat over shad...That's unusual, but when the fish tell you what they want, you listen.

I think we boated 20 last time out and crushed fatheads and fathead crawler combo did most of the damage. Others in the boat did try some shad with little luck. My shad is a few years old so maybe thats part of the problem.

I still think people get a little to giddy over it like its gold or something.

Historically its been less then effective for me... But thats just me... grin

Pretty sure Hi 5 closed.

Matts lucky bait is your best bet near Stillwater.

Feel free to give me all your frozen shad. Catching 60" fish is what makes me giddy. smile

And I seam to recall you having similar veiws as mine a while back too DTRO?

Some of my shad at home is 4 years old and I have some stashed at a friends that is at least 6 years aged.

Dipp netted every one also.. winkgrin

Oh don’t get me wrong. Fatheads (or some sort of other minnow like sucker or rainbow ) is my second favorite with crawlers being third. If I could only use one bait for Sturgeon it would probably be fatheads because they seem to work everywhere universally and you don’t have to mess with as many other fish like drum, and suckers and carp. I’ll take em over crawlers on the Rainy all day long…..but Shad just doesn’t work up there.

Yeah, I also wouldn’t want shad more than a year old. Even then, only when that’s all I have. I don’t mind frozen, but freezer burnt is no bueno.

Just based on some of the nights I’ve had out here on the Croix though, I’d pay triple the price of fatheads for good shad. Gold? Not really, but almost as bad as those $15/ea suckers at Thorne Bros they had this fall. smile

Thanks guys,

I used to get my bait and archery stuff at Hi 5

Been using Fatheads up north of O'Brien, I was just wondering how and where to get on the shad,

Sounds like dip netting them is the way to go then?

I just never seem to get close enough to get them with a net

Cast nets are illegal in both MN and WI. Wi does allow some sort of trawl you can pull behind a boat, but its not very practical for the average fisherman. The MN Catfish Species Workgroup has been working with the DNR for the past 2 or 3 years to try and legalize cast nets. SteveD (who posts in this forum regularly) has been working hard on this. The St Croix river is FULL of shad and fish love to eat them. It only makes sense that we should be able to find a compromise to be able to catch them and use them on the same body of water.

On a side note, the past couple of trips I had frozen shad right next to fresh crawlers/fathead and the catch rate was about equal, however all the small fish were on the fats and all the big fish were on shad.

The big cats like Shad too, this one found the bottom of the net on Sat.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
