Think I saw some teenagers "catching one" in the abandoned parking lot at the old public access.

I have caught several small sunfish (3-4)in. lots of minnows swimming in there now. Need to transplant the freshwater shrimp for the divers.

In other news, community development director Marc Weigle informed the council that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is close to the final phases for installing an outlet to help lower Pelican Lake.

Weigle said that as part of the project, the DNR would install a gravity outlet on the eastern side of the lake and would use the former County Ditch 21 in the interim until a permanent route can be constructed. He said the city and DNR would have access to shut the pump off if needed due to potential downstream concerns. He recommended the council approve an easement agreement for use of Ditch 21 for a period of up to five years.

DNR representative Fred Bengston was present and said the DNR recently reached agreement for the last property needed for the permanent ditch, but would need Ditch 21 for at least a year. Bengston said the goal is to lower the lake about 4 feet from its current elevation by a gravity outlet, and then a pump system would be installed.

He also said most of the water drainage would take place during fall and winter so as not to interfere with wet spring and summer months.

Councilor Marx said he likes that the city or DNR would be able to close the outlet.

The council unanimously authorized the city attorney to draft a temporary easement allowing DNR access to County Ditch 21.

What is the point to draining this lake? What a waste of money IMO. There is plenty of ponds and swamps around for ducks to nest...pretty sure they are not full of ducks or over capacity to where we need to lower pelican to create more space.

I talked to someone that lives by the lake and the DNR told them that the downstream stuff is done and now they will be starting on the actual outlet and beginning parts of the ditch system. Not sure of an exact date when water will actual be flowing though.

I figure they spend a boatload on fish, might as well give the ducks a few crumbs. Or maybe they are doing it to give people on these forums something else to complain about other than politics and sports!

Ditch to Regal Creek which flows to the crow river and eventually the Mississippi. Both of which already have mil-foil.

MN DNR logic: You can drain half a lake into a river, but you cant take the bait you bought with you.

On a side note, how has the fishing been in the area? Did the lakes turn over a few weeks ago when it was rainy and windy?

So that's why they were working on the creek this summer, interesting.I jog through those woods often. The creek is not real wide or deep, should interesting.

I was hoping they would have the lake lower, we will not be able to see the muskrat runs as easy with all this water.

Although the northern spearing maybe ok.

The end result when this whole project is done may result in a better trapping lake but it will probably take 10 yrs or to find out after the final drawdown and refill in the short term the muskrat population will most likely go down with the water, population has been dropping for the last several years in there anyway

I know that as of last week the Contractor has been selected and we have been told that as part of the letting of the contract that the work has to be completed by early in December. If the weather holds water will be draining from the lake much earlier than that as the "connection" to the lake is very short and all that needs to be done is a few pipes and some ditch cleaning and away it goes. The plan is to have the lake low enough by next spring to install the pump system (3-4ft lower). The DNR is confident that doing this over the winter they can release the amount of water needed to lower the lake from record highs and still maintain all of the proformas set in maintianing water quality goals downstream.

This can't happen soon enough!!!

Take him out if you want the lake died pretty bad last winter but the lowering of the lake this winter shouldn't keep you away if you want to try.

Yea Im going to get out in the boat in the next few weekends to see if its worth it. Otherwise me and him will find a new lake close by. I loved going out there and catching fish after fish, great lake for kids

I am still in the search for a new lake to replace this one. I fished the summer in the Brainerd area, and had good luck, but my failing 20 year old truck is bound back to Annandale. This area is a good bass area, full of people who want it to be a walleye area. My little nephew loved the non stop action of pelican lake, and I loved the giant pike. I too am looking for a lake where kids can get easy fish. My top pick right now would be pleasant. You can PM me if you want, but the spot is probably the most well known around. It can be hit and miss with bigger fish, but the action is usually constant, and you can catchy any kind of fish in the lake in one spot.
