St. Croix Late May Report

With the no wake finally lifted fisherman can open the boat up past closed throttle and burn some gas again. I will say that the no wake kept many anglers off the river and it was quiet and peaceful.

Wisconsin shore line of St.

Croix River 7am all is quiet

Since last wednesday the 21st the bite has been strong, it does not matter cranks or crawlers in terms of what the walleye want just find the active fish and it has been very fun catching.

Win with his 24"

walleye released that

thumped his leech and stayed

on the bottom for a while.

Win was using orange color

Suffix all day and you know

in the sun, I do think that

line caught the walleyes

attention more than the

clear mono. Win would say it was the angler not the line. smile

For crawler fishing depths from 10 to 22 have been most consistent and I would pick 16 to 17' as the main target zone. On guide trips we have used mostly 3/8 ounce lindy weights. If running into into the strong current 3/4 has been average weight. No doubt we are targeting the bottom (as always when rigging) and the take is a soft thud. I have not seen one deep hooked walleye all spring, all fish mouth hooked.

Tony with a nice 23"

walleye that was released

this fish hit a crawler.

With the water temperature coming up fast, leeches are now turning and getting walleyes attention. Rigging with leeches and crawlers this time of year is interchangeable for me. Both are now must have. Hard to come up with any magic tips, for rigging, I guess I would say though that I am seeing many different sizes of fish and differing species mixed together.

followed his line in the

circle and lifted for the

hook set.

Crankbait fishing with Rapalas also has been very successful and with the dropping water this search method works so well. Again I target the bottom and troll about 2.0 mph average, slower into fast current and faster away from current. Shad Raps are hard to beat in my opinion and are the gold standard in the crankbait world. Colors are all over the board, i fish lures vs. colors. Meaning I will run a tried and true lure as it is a proven producer over a "color" they want. Chartreuse, gold, crawdad, and blue are standard river producers. Firetiger is a must.

Have fun out there and Keep Catchin'

Decompress time - St. Croix River early morning on Memorial Day.

Steve Thein with a 22.5" walleye he landed livebait rigging with a leech. Upon capture of this willy walleye Steve said "Very light bite, and I let him have it for ten seconds before I set the hook". Nice! Released to reproduce.

The St. Croix River has risen in water temperature fast, as a result we are seeing some catfish and other species as well.

This fish was taken using a Limit Creek LCS69MLF "smoothie" rod on the cast. I cast up shallow on the feeding shelf and was lucky enough to connect with this healthy 25" walleye. Released to reproduce.

The willow river of Wisconsin flows into Lake Malileau, Lake Malileau flows into the St. Croix. Lake Malileau is chock full of silt and sediment from the recent torential rains and looks terrible. There is a distinguishable mudline flowing from Malileau all the way down into the Hudson Channel. I avoid this muddy water for fishing.

Steve Thien with another nice walleye from the St. Croix this fish also hit a leech while livebait rigging. Catch and release. Steve had the mojo going. smile

Of note we are not seeing many smallmouth at all. I am sure they are in 2 to 4 feet in the flooded brush. It has been all walleye soon the smallmouth trips will start.

river level 683.4

minimal debris

water temp 73

Fishing tip -

Hook your livebait so it tear off the hook and does not interfere with the hook finding its mark in the fishes mouth. You do this by barely hooking the bait. I call this hooking your bait “lean” as opposed to “rich”. Anglers hook their bait rich so it does not become stolen. Bait is to be used not conserved!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
