With high water in the news for virtually everywhere remember while it causes some serious problems for those right close to the rivers edge it does make fishing.......better. Who would know more about fishing high water than Johnnie Candle from Devils Lake? He is on this podcast talking about that very thing....

You are going hear ALOT about how things are now on LOW. I talk with Nick Painovich from Zippel Bay on this show. He was on the charter boat with a load of clients while we were talking, that is pretty first hand info...

Listen to this podcast.

Tommorrow I will have even more information, this time from a little boat

(not real little, you know what I mean)

Dave Halvorson took me to Lake of the Woods the first time I was ever there about this time in 1980. He knows as much about the lake as anyone. Dave just got back from 5 days of fishing (actually 2 days of fishing and 3 days of watching the wind and rain). Through it all, when they could fish it was good when they found the right spots. Dave share the right spots on this NCOR podcast

Last Saturday was among the best days I have ever had fishing Lake of the Woods. It got me thinking about people who might be cancelling reservations because they are hearing about high water and flooding. Don't Do It!

On this NCOR Podcast I share information on how the bite was this weekend and how it has been all season long. It is as good as I have ever seen it. Choosing the right boat landing to use, slowing down a little on the lake and paying attention are the only things you may need to do different to get on these great fish.

Listen to this podcast and then get excited to keep or make some reservations at your favorite LOW Resort

Whether you are on Green Bay, LOW or where ever you fish, making adjustments when fishing is tough can make the difference between big success or failure.

Johnnie Candle made some changes in tactics and wound up with a great finish over the weekend in his first MWC Tournament of the season. Listen to the story on this NCOR Podcast

I finally got Paul Johnson from River Bend Resort to sit down long enough to talk about recovery from the fire in the River Bend Lodge and high water in the Rainy River. Wednesday Paul and Brandi got away from the hub bub and went fishing. I got him on the cell phone while he was pulling spinners over the East Bar at Garden Island.

Good Interview, lots of information on this podcast....

The Charter Captains all know which reefs to fish just by noticing which way the wind the blowing. If you just start keeping track of the direction the breeze is from every time you go out you will soon be making better decisions

on where to fish from day to day..info here on this NCOR podcast

Today I ask our touring Walleye Pro Johnnie Candle about wind and what adjustments he may or may not make to deal with it. (Not huge wind but day to day fishable wind).

Wind can be a huge factor in your success if you pay attention and know what to look for.

High water, shoreline erosion and current in the river. There are a few

negative happening on LOW right now. HOWEVER, fishing is awesome and easy and close in heading to the holiday weekend. Paul Johnson from River Bend talks about what is going on at the lodge after the fire 3 weeks ago and segues that into very good news about fishing....Have a safe and fun holiday weekend.

This is a real interesting event filled with twists and turns that keep your guessing all day long. This NCOR podcast talks about some of what comes into play at the biggest one day fishing tournament on Lake of the Woods (probably biggest event period). Check it out then start making plans to try to get signed up next year....

2 of 3 MWC events fished with 4th place being the worst finish so far. One event left to fish (Cass Lake in Sept) and Team of the Year is within reach. That would be worth much more (money and career wise) than the checks he is bringing home from the tournaments.

Listen to how this played out on this NCOR podcast

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
