My Ion broke

Iambjm

Recommended Posts

I have only had it a little over a month and have only used it 8 times. The lever on the top of the handle which should be in the up position is now laying flat on the handle, and I can't squeeze the trigger on it. It is totally seized up, one of the other gals I fished with this weekend had her lever break off completely. Time to contact customer support.

Let us know how that goes. I've heard of this happening more than a few times with the new safety trigger breaking. Kinda a bummer that a small plastic trigger mechanism can make the hole thing so completely useless.

I've had this happen to mine twice now since I got it in Dec. The first time I drove from the TC to cumberland and they fixed mine while I waited in the parking lot. The second time it happened I didn't have to the nerve to drive all the way out there again, so I sent it in for warranty through a retailer and haven't heard about it for 3 weeks now.

What I'm hoping is that they are going to give it a permanent fix because this is clearly a commonly occurring problem that won't go away unless they change whatever it is about that trigger mechanism that causes it to lay down flat.

I called them today and they are going to send me the part I need and explained to me how to change it. First chance I have had to contact them, life has been chaotic lately. Will let you know if it works.

Got the part I needed, surprised how flimsy this is for a $500 auger. Hmmmm.......

I needed an electric for in the wheelhouse, I've got the part now I have to scare up a #10 torx head. I worked a Home and Sport show this weekend in Grand Rapids Mn so haven't had time to put in the new part.

This is the first time I've bought the first year of a product and it ends up being better then what comes out later.

JSK I would find some good wood to knock on smile The trigger and safety switch from day one seemed a little chinsy and possible weak point......

I just bought a new 2014 silverado and hate it so bad I said I will never buy a first year truck again but it's so bad I'm temped to buy the new 2015 f150 when it comes out because it can't possibly be as bad as what I have now.

As far as the switch on the first year Ion, mine has never worked right from day one and I like it that way. I only have to push the safty button once in the beginning and then just the trigger after that.

Max trailer with 3.73 rear end.

I cant tell if its a truck, Cadillac,

I'll start with the big stuff

Vibration that comes and goes some times it feels likeits hopping down the road, put new tire and wheel still didn't help. huge issue with many owners, search GM truck forums.

Stiff ride.

Hard transition from v4 to v8 and vise versa when temps under 30. Even when it works well it feels like it's shifting in and out of overdrive.

Seat cushion moves like crazy, slides when I take a corner. been in for repairs 2 times and still not fixed. Another comin issue

Frame undercoating is cracking and peeling off and rusting in just 8 months

Rough idle at stop lights

Gas milage was great until fall, then with the cold the v4 mode doesn't work much. Went from 19 mpg to 13.5 same rout and speed to my work. Truck is kept in a heated garage at night.

I could go on but most of the rest is more nit picky like paint flaws, can't reach the dip stick door panels get white residue from clean hands, dash rattles, like I said I could go on and on.

Vibration and frame rust and stif ride are my biggest gripes. It's not just me with these issues look at the sales of these trucks $7,500 off of a new body style, the first year! I'm guessing I will have a hard time getting anything less the MSRP when it comes time to buy a 2015 f150.

I've owned chevy trucks since before I even had a license. 8 chevy trucks and this is the 4th I've bought new and it's the most disappointing.

Finally got around to replacing the lever, which was broken inside the handle. Cheap piece of plastic, but I figured if it breaks again it can be jury rigged to run without the plastic lever. I will have to try it out and see.

Iambjm - thanks for posting your assessment of the inner workings of the safety mechanism of the Ion handle. I was hoping that if mine broke, I could fix it by doing as you suggest and rigging it to not require the safety paddle at all. I figure between the delay, and removing the battery during transport, the trigger safety is a bit overkill anyway.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.

Did you have any luck?     I got a bird but didn’t really do much for pics worth showing.

It depends on a lot of factors, I suppose.   I hung on to my last gas auger for a few years after getting into electric but I never used it so I finally sold it.  Haven’t missed it one bit.  You bet it was reliable though.  Still started on the second pull for the new owner.   After trying several options in the electric world, I’m currently settled on a Strikemaster 40V with Liteflight bits.  With 2 fully charged batteries, I fish all day in Canada, cutting 10 inch holes.     What I’ll agree with is, if you search by drilling and flasher sonar, you will probably be more comfortable with the run time of a gas auger.  When you start incorporating GPS mapping, forward facing sonar, and saved waypoints, you don’t need to Swiss cheese every spot you fish.  I can still run through both batteries when the fishing isn’t great but I never feel like I have to count my holes.  It’s more like: Did I need the second battery before the middle part of our fishing hours?  If I still can’t catch fish after running out 2 batteries, it doesn’t matter cuz the fish just ain’t biting.   That’s fishing on the dark side! 😉
