Who has been out?

Recommended Posts

Wow what a relentless winter mother nature has thrown at us. I can honestly say this is the slowest winter in quite a few years for me. I know the best months are ahead though, March and April always bring tremendous fishing. But I'd like to hear from those have been out!

I have been hitting it hard every weekend since January and I have yet to get on the fish like usual. Have yet to catch my limit anywhere! going to brave the cold this weekend again since it is my last time to get out until April 1st... hopefully switching from eyes to panfish will help me produce some more fish! Lakes include : two inlets, toad, detroit, sand, little toad.

You will need a snowmobile to get on Little Toad. When I was there a few weeks ago the road to the approach was blocked with snow.

  • 2 weeks later...

I hear this alot from so many different people and wondering what presentation you use and depth you guys fish. I fish hard every winter for panfish, 3-5 times a week including this winter and I would have to say this is one of the best ice fishing winters I have had. 18-27 feet of water, lots of structure with 1/8 oz jigging spoons seems to be the go to for big gills and crappies.

We found the mother load in 17-20' Sunday. I normally use tungsten jig tipped with waxie in one hole and a minnow under a bobber in another hole but Sunday I did use a small chartreuse lindy frosty spoon hooked with a plastic clam spiky and it was the ticket. Good Luck!

bbfenatic, on Fri I went up to that lake "up North" that you told me about. We caught about a dozen smallish crappies and a few gills. We saw plenty of fish on the camera, but I had a heck of a time getting them to bite. It was a fun day on the ice though!!!

I fished a little slough on sunday and smoked the crappies at dark(small ones) on the breakline. Fished my hotspot from last year that produced many crappies 14-16 inches last night and caught nothing but walleyes. Im gathering my thoughts tonight and gonna try something different tomorrow.

Scoot:

Went Sunday with a group to same spot and it was lights out, fished a little deeper than I saw where you setup. Jim thinks about 75 crappies...I think it was a few more than that....Nothing huge but man did they have the feed bag on...it was fastest one up to the lure got hooked....one after the other. Fun evening for sure.

Sounds like a blast! Unfortunately we had to leave right at about the time when I'd have expected the crappies to really get going. Maybe if we'd have stayed a little longer we could have hit a big run. Who knows...

I've started to fish pretty often now, Id say the bite is pretty steady! BB, that was a pretty exciting bite the other night, Scoot, the kids would enjoy the heck out of that action... I hit up a different lake the other night and nailed some big girls. The biggest one was just over 15" caught by my bud.

Is there alot of water/slush on top of the ice?

Yes, I was rather surprised but I guess with the sun so strong now it is really making a mess, wish I had worn my knee high rubber boots but now I won't even consider anything else rest of the year.

I've been out chasing tulibees but the action has been really slow. Did get enough to smoke dang they're good. Hey Jim how close was that lake to me?? PM me if you want smile

Good work fellas! Jim, great pics!!! Between work, my wife's work schedule, and kid-related stuff I'm pretty well hosed for the rest of the season. My basement project is screaming my name every weekend it seems. Oh well, get stuff done now so I can spend more time in the boat this Summer...

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.

I don't know, this save the plant thing looks like a money maker, for someone! 🫤 Where do you think electric prices are going to go when they have the monopoly for everything that moves! 🙄

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?
