Best crappie lake in central minnesota

Recommended Posts

If you were going to rate your top 3-5 crappie lakes to have the best potential to catch a 15" or bigger crappie in central mn what would they be? Just curious what everyone would rate their top lakes to have a chance at a big one between now and open water season...

Thanks

I would pick the biggest lakes in the area. Koronis and Clearwater would be my top choises.

The crappie in my avatar is a bit over 15in, it's still swiming in Cleawater wink

I would say for this part of the state I would have to agree with Rick Koronis and Clearwater. Outside of here a little NW my go to lake is Pelican in Ashby and numerous lakes around the Pelican Rapids Fergus Falls area. I am a strong advvocate about a slot on crappies. I know of a few lakes that have a 11 inch minimum rule and I tell you it helps. This year I have caught and released 6 over 14 plus a 15 1/4 and 15 1/2 incher. Slots work for big Pies. I also encourage others to CPR any crappie over 11 inches to help promote the opportunity to create lakes with trophys locally even though we have no slot rules implemented.

these lakes are a little north of us but hold big fish: Long Lake north of Grey Eagle and Wabedo north of Pine River..

I agree with Icehawk, i don't believe overall enough is done to protect the crappie with size limits.

Last summer on the lake where we have our cabin we released just short of 900 crappies and i don't believe we had 1/2 dz that would have gone over 12 " . that was not the case 10 years ago when we first bought it. the pressure is unbelievable. for obvious reasons i'm not naming the lake. we just need to do all we can with C/R to protect the resource's.

Best lakes around here are those bigger productive lakes like Clearwater and Rice/Koronis. Would definitely give the nod to Green for year in and year out consistency, but good luck through the ice....bring some extra gas for the auger wink Find some structure or feeding flat near where they school up during the day and hit up that evening bite window. Instead of spending all that effort, might just want to hit up Bolfing or some of those pockets I mentioned to you earlier. The fish are there....

Throw a dart at a map in northern mn near detroit lakes or ely and youll have a pretty good shot.

I'll just about second this. I fish the Detroit Lakes area and I have about a dozen lakes within 40 miles that put out quantity and quality day in and day out and I keep finding new hot spots every year in different lakes in the area. I only chase crappies with no time given to eyes and that focus helps. Had a day about a month ago I caught 7 over 14" and my PB 16" plus a bunch of "eaters" on an area lake and I was the only one fishing it.

Any of the lakes in the area are capable of producing a couple 15" crappies. But to have a legitimate change of catching one is another story all together.

Spend some time on the MN Lakefinder website doing research and you could find a gem closer than you think.

My favorites are the little lakes that don't get much pressure. If you do some leg work you can find big crappies around. Once you do find them little special lakes keep your mouth buttoned up and practice C&R on the big slabs. O yeah and do not fish the lake everyday. Why because if you do people will start to wonder why you are fishing the lake every day and you will have company soon. I fish one of the little lakes maybe 2 times a winter. I do not keep any fish out of it, because people have waited to see how I have done and when you have an empty bucket they just shake their heads.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
