Fished Arnesens, house #53 on Sat. and Sun.
About 1.4 miles out from Arnesens, 28 feet of water. 5 guys, 66 walleye/sauger on Sat., 67 on Sun.
Honorable Mention: 28, 24, and 21 inch walleye. 12 pound northern. Plenty of eater size fish. Salmon and hammered silver color swedish pimple style jigs, as well as plain red hooks and small chartreuse Gem-n-eyes produced very well. All big fish on the salmon color and full minnow. Also, try a double minnow on a plain hook, it worked well.
The Arnesen employees said we were catching more fish than others on both days, for numbers and size. You absolutely must keep changing it up to produce numbers. When houses around us would move, we would fish out of there holes outside and produce good numbers quickly. What one fish might like, the next won't. No fish in 20 minutes on a lure, change (even if you were catching them on that jig, come back to it later)(suprisingly, gold was not a good choice).
Finally, a large portion of the fish are hitting the bait when you lay it on the bottom of the lake. Jiggle, jiggle, rest it on the bottom, lift up, if resistance, set the hook and enjoy.
Hope this helped.

Was the house out by Gull Rock? If not, what area were you fishing?
Also, does Arnesen's have houses out on 12 Mile Reef yet?

A group of us got back from Arnesens yesterday. We stayed in a couple of their sleepers. The sleepers were in 28 ft. of water and over the mud. They are unable to put there sleepers out around Gull rock or 12 mile because of ice thickness(9-11 inches). We had a great time and fishing was good. Was able to keep 52 eaters ranging from 14-19 inches. Talked with a group that was portable around gull rock in 31ft of water and they said they only caught little ones, with very few eaters. Gold angel eyes worked the best along with a glow hook on a bobber. The perch fishing was also fantastic where we were at. The majority of the perch were caught on the bobbers. 2 nice eater walleyes were also caught on a bobber between 10-11:30 PM. Good Luck to all.

I forgot to mention that Arnesens does not sell shiners. We were unaware of this and were forced to use fatheads. This is purely our mistake for not asking ahead of time. It did not appear that the shiners would have made adifference, since the fishing was good with the fatheads. It was nice to catch a couple of fish late at night when not expecting much. Arnesens felt it was going to be several weeks before themove the sleepers out to 12 mile and Gull rock. Personally I think the spot they had them was just fine for now. I must admit I was a little surprised at how thin the ice was, where we were at. They are only using trackers (small cars) to move their homesat this moment. This definetely told me that they did not feel comfortable with anything heavier and having been out their, I now see why. This is not to scare anyone, just to inform others on the ice conditions around the area. Good luck to all and let us know how you did.
Dr. Bob,
I am definetly with you on the sleeper thing. I would recommend this to others if they have not tried it.
Grouse,
I am aware of some spelling and grammar mistakes in my last post. To be honest I don't care, because I feel people will understand what I was trying to say.
[This message has been edited by STILLNOFISH (edited 12-30-2003).]

Yeah, that is why I'm thinkin about bringin
shiners. We had pretty good luck a few years back out of Zippel using shiners. So I think I'm going to pick some up an the way up. Last year at Arnesens, we did pretty well on fatheads though...who knows.
Any more reports?

Posted

I'm curious about the use of shiners vs. fatheads. Is their a significant difference in productivity between the two? I'm sure it has to do with time of year, but has anyone seen a big difference when fishing with shiners and fatheads simultaneously?
March 4-7.... Can't come quick enough...may not be able to wait!

As for shiners vs fatheads, it all depends on the day. I was up before Christmas out on 12 Mile reef and couldn't get a bite on a fathead, but the shiners under the bobbers never stopped. For some reason, the fish didn't like the jigs particularly well that weekend. Other times, I have seen absolutely no difference. Whenever I go up to LOW, I always bring 2 bags of shiners. One for each day. If they bite on them, you have them. If not, you are only out 5 bucks.

I never buy anything but shiners, anymore. I usually find that the people I'm with do the experimenting for me and find out that shiners are better than chubs, fatheads, whatever. I once told someone that I'd catch more fish on a month-old dead shiner than they could on a live fathead or chub. I only use chubs or fatheads as a last resort, to me shiners are worth it. That's my opinion, but I know a lot of people like variety too.

I am going to do the same Pickerel, a couple of oxy bags please...and fill'em wit shiners!

I always do fine on fatheads but bring shiners along just incae. Fatheads last a ton longer even in bubbler.

Great info on this post fellas. I bring both shiners and minnows and what works, works, and if it doesn't save them for lunch with a few Old Milwakees. Yeah haw

our rocky point report-
3 guys, two days fishing, 6 in the bucket, threw back maybe 13. very slow. 2 fish out of that 19 total- one 27" and one 29" kinda odd, provided some salvation though. they need to move their houses. the guide was saying that there wasn't quite enough ice, as we looked out to 12, 16, and arnesen's reef and saw hundreds of houses, trucks, etc..... never go without your portable, you'll never know when you may need it!!
a good time was had though.

Bapper
Yea I talked to at the show too. That was last weekend, he said the fishing was slow. I hope when we go up next week that It'll be better than last year. Though we did good last year, always hope for the best....Thankx for the replies!!

We fished Out there on Sat. with the million others. Started at Arneson's reef had one fish from 7:30-9:30. 32'= 16" SAUG. Moved to gull rock east side. 28' Graphed and caught one more... set up caught 2 more in the next hr. Moved again to the south. 28' Graphed fish like mad. Set up and , managed one more and a pout. (also 3-4 fish that were T I N Y) Moved to the west side of the rock caught another keeper and a 22" eye before leaving at 4:30. Not the best luck I have had more likely the worst day, but 7 fish and a good time.
PS. If anyone found a shovel Sat morning north side of Arneson's reef I lost an aluminum grain scoop. Just in case some nice person out there would like to return it ???
Thanks, and that's my report.
Anyway email [email protected]

After talking to Arnesens at the sportshow this past weekend I found out that houses are on the way out to Arnesens reef and 12 mile reef right now. Its hard to move houses on the weekends so its done during the week. WhaTT, I guarantee you will have fun and you will catch fish whether you fish by Gull, Arnesens reef or 12 Mile. The guy in the last post seemed somewhat disappointed. He only got a 27 and a 29, that is something that I would be disappointed in...

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
