Please come I am a newbie to the Get To Gator but a long time spearer and forum member. It will be fun to meet some fellow members and check out decoys spears and saws. I will have gas auger and saw along and a set of tongs. If its fun as I think it will be I will try to make the early one as well next December.

The tranny went out of my car this morning on the way to school, so with that, My spearing season is over and done.

Have fun guys, I will still make it the to bait store to make sure it is open for you guys, so I may see a few of you.

Gordy,

I should have an open seat in the truck and room for another set of gear if you want to ride along. I'm going right past you on the way by, so it's no problem. Let me know if your interested.

After all, Borden was your idea, hate to have you miss out.

I'm in the same boat (as to not really new to spearing but new to the group.) was thinking the same thing about Meeting fellow members and maybe picking up a new trick or two. My son is really exited to go to different lake. This is his second season spearing he really fell in love with it.

So someone explain please how the pot luck works, and what's left to bring? I would be happy to add whatever is needed. how many people usually show up?

Jaymo99,

I'll have a couple kids about your boys age with. As far as the potluck we usually have it by my house at noon. Bring whatever you would like. So far we have, venison, brats, chili, bars, and chips as far as I know. We always have plenty. I think we're at around 15 people by my head count.

We have had close to 30 people for the Winnie gtg.

I could bring a couple cases of assorted soft drinks, and I'll also pick up something to go with the meal. Can either pick up some store bought cookies or something, or if you brat guys want I can pick up a couple dozen buns.

That sounds perfect. We have someone bringing the buns so were good there.

Venison is thawing and will be in marinade tonight. We will bring a 6 ft folding table as well. I will bring some large trash bags. MJ1657 don't forget the grill!!! Has anyone ever speared Borden? I have never been there so will need some guidance. See everyone at the boat landing. Is there only one landing? still 8am?

Grill is in the truck and having that table will be nice. Landing is right on 18 just south of the bar. 8 am will work.

Looking forward to meeting the new guys that are coming up.

I'm packing my truck and leaving any extra equipment behind. If anyone needs something let me know and I'll throw it in.

I'll have a bump board for measuring fish.

If anyone is late I'll have an American flag courtesy of Merk flying on the back of my truck. It should be easy to spot us.

Rough crowd!

Lots of fun today. We all ate enough to bust. Venison steaks, Cajun venison sausage, brats, cheese venison brats, summer sausage and sticks, chips, brownies with and without nuts and special k bars, and sodas.

Great to meet the new guys. I have a feeling the Winnie gtg is going to be huge.

Congratulations and thank for pulling me out of the snow drift. Thanks to everyone that got me un-stuck and it was a pleasure meeting you all. My sons asked me why I would want to go meet up with a bunch of people I do not know to go spearing. I told them that most people that spear are good guys and girls. Keegan, the son that came with me stated how nice everyone was. Mike thanks for grilling, you did a great job. I am still full. I will keep an eye on the first week of December for the Winny trip.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
