Here's a few of my pics from the season, I don't get out as much as I used to but still had a decent season, mostly in ND, but killed a dozen or so ducks in MN and a bunch of geese. I'm not in any of the pics as I'm the cameraman at the end of every hunt.

Early season pasture hunt, funny story behid this one, got to hunt with some pretty good guys.

Nov. 13 Central MN goldeneyes. Pickings were slim up that way on our lakes but these 3 cooperated nicely in the wind and snow.

Few pics from ND Nov. 19 and 20. Shot a 4 man limit of 18 mallards, 5 drake GWT, one widgeon and 12 geese on the 19th during the middle of the day in a corn field. Pulled out by 1:30pm and let it rest. Set up in the same field the next am in 8deg temps, the roost froze and we only saw a handful of ducks and killed one honker. Snow shut down scouting but we found a big bunch of honkers right by the road, set up for one last go of it and killed three more.

Couple of MEA weekend central MN ringers. These two piled right into the dekes on saturday am and the old browning cleaned them right up. They were the only ducks that even gave us a sniff hunting all day saturday and sunday am. Was a pretty slow year in MN for numbers of ducks seen.

Got out for one last hunt on 11/30 and snagged a few more late season mallards with some good hunting partners. Got 5, one had the wad do a little cosmetic work on the top of his mind so he didn't get to show his pretty green face. He was one of a pair of drakes that came in CLOSE today. Sad to see the season go. Looks like a lot of guys on here had great seasons and worked hard for their birds. I will miss the ducks until next season, but I won't miss the 3am wakeups. I'll be itching to do it agin by next fall though.

You guys don't have duck hunting crystal balls???? Mine tells me how many four pound double reward banded neck collared septuple curl mallards I will get before I even put on my longjons. I got it in a combo pack with a mega super delux stealth layout blind that has a profile 86.437% lower than any other blind made and is endorsed by Fred Zink, buddah and ghandi; a power honker hen gander clucker carnage grinder meat shooter short reed double call; a super solar nova ultra heater camo skull cap, and it was all stuffed inside a black hoodie!

That should read 11/28, oops. Sad to see the season go today.

LOL. Just had to razz ya' a bit johnsd. Nice drake photos. I'm bummed about the season coming to a close as well. The past 4 weeks really started getting good. I'd much rather sit in the duck blind a few more weeks than trudging through cattails and corn.

Still going to try and get in one more goose hunt before the season ends. Was supposed to join a group in southern Kansas but will have to put off that mallard hunt to have puppies. Will be waiting for the snows in SoDak on their return trip.

Opening day today in SW Virginia. Didn't think there'd be too many quackers flying around the Blue Ridge but we managed to find a few. Ones on the right are a pair of black ducks, a new species for the group. Fun times!

Well with 25 MPH winds and temps in the high teens, we debated going out this mornin in the little boat... glad we did! We both limited out on black duck, mallards, and threw in a couple bonus buffies and a hoodie for good measure

GoBlue, are your study sites in VA then? In other words, will you be there this summer?

Nice pics. Looks like a good time. Take advantage of those black ducks in the Atlantic flyway. I shot a black duck, possibly a black duck/mallard cross in Minnesota. Not likely to repeat that feat.

Looks like fun hunting. Nice to get the finals done and then have some down time.

yes, my study area is the entire length of the New River in Virginia. I'm stuck here year round smile

Well today was just one of those days. Thought we'd knock em dead, and there was (practically) nary a bird to be seen. Started off snowing real hard, we got the dekes out and 10 minutes later when shooting time came they were covered in snow. Had one lone mallard come in right away, then nothing for an hour. Then I stood up to pee, and was just taking my jacket off when a group came in out of the snow. Needless to say they saw me and peaced out. Fast forward 30 minutes, I try to start peeing again, and a group of Canadas come in, but my buddy's call was frozen and they drifted by just out of range. Picked up and moved to a new spot, greenhead comes in right away... pull up and line him up in the sights... and my trigger is frozen solid from the freezing rain. We ended up with a couple greenheads and a coupla black ducks and a very nice lookin hoodie. They were about the only thing flying, gonna try to do some home taxidermy oh him.full-23483-4329-pc160258.jpg

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
    • jim curlee
I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
