Saturday was a great day for ducks. Today was a great day for geese.

First pic is me with 3 drake mallards, 1 hen mallard, a woody, and a blue wing teal. I did not see many teal in my area. Second pic is our 6 man limit of honkers from this morning. grinfull-19983-24641-dsci0506.jpg

Went out solo on Saturday with the pooch and got this in an hour or so.full-40472-24687-img_0422.jpg

Made the mistake on the hen but was rewarded with a band for the desk drawer anyway. The most rewarding experience was the pintail that I got after shooting the mistake hen mallard. I didn't want to shoot another hen but knew by the shape (long and skinny) and flying style (straight and banking-no quick turns)that it was a pintail and okay to shoot.

Hunt was public and less than 1 .5 hrs from the west metro. Didn't see as many teal as usual but was happy opener was as early as it was.

Love the second and third pics, certified jumbo. Good to hear about your dad (I assume the old timer pictured above)still crawling through cattails.

Awesome pics Tyler! Looks like you got hundreds of birds coming in on that first picture!

Ha, yeah it does look like that, doesn't it? Those are actually geese going out to the fields to feed. Ducks were a different story. Few and far between, but we managed to entertain ourselves for the morning, at least smile

Pics from my hunt yesterday. Best day of duck hunting I've ever had. I recapped the day in the "Waterfowl Reports" thread.

1st half of the day. 5 drakes and 1 hen. Thought it was a young drake, oh well!

My old man standing in the beaver pond with a few brown drakes. You can see almost the entire pond in the pic. There were around 2000 mallards sitting there when we got there. He wouldn't fire a shot here, let me do all the shooting. I hope I can be as good of a dad as he's been, I consider myself extremely fortunate. He's taught me everything I know about hunting & fishing and can't wait to pass the same knowledge onto my boy.

This is why I love beaver pond hunting. This was our "spread" that was drawing in hundreds of mallards.

Total take for the day. 5 drake mallards, 1 greenwing, 5 drake woodies and a hen. And a grouse that decided to show it's head on the drive home. What a day!!

Thanks guys. None of the woodies were real trophies, but I'm getting 2 of em mounted for my dad for this Christmas to put above the fireplace at their new house. Sometimes a trophy isn't the animal itself but the memory that goes with it.

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Looks like you could use a FM hat. 😉    The future son in law prefers the lump coal.  He’ll start it in coal starter over a propane burner, then dump in it his smoker grill as needed.   Congrats on the clean break “over there”.

Should really start a What yeah Smoking thread!    Another fun place we tried when up in Duluth. OMC stands for "Oink, Moo, Cluck" They serve pork cracklins for starter to test their sauces on.

On the east side of St. Boni. It's not too far from me. A friend lives in St Boni and loves the place. I haven't tried it yet.
