Rut Activity?

Is anyone seeing any rut activity? I hunted this week in Wabasha county, and couldn't even find one rub or scrape. Which is very very unusual this time of year. I heard that the rut prediction for this year is 3 weeks later then last year. It sure looks like it in my area!

I hunt Wabasha county and have been seeing plenty of scrapes and a few rubs here and there. I'm going out again tomorrow to do some more scouting before I hit the bow stand hard the next two weeks.

A few rubs popping up here and there but not much scraping activity yet, about right for my area this time of year. Things will pick up soon.

Activity here in Fillmore County is pretty darn slow this weekend. I've noticed a few new rubs and some half hearted scrapes but this definitely looks and feels like the "Lull".

I hunt in northern Wisconsin, put on a few miles yesterday and saw one scrape and one rub. Typically that area is a little late to get into the rut.

I got pics of 2 bucks sparring on the 11th of October and one making a scrape on the 2nd. The sparring must not have meant much yet as there were still 4 bucks running together.

I posted the above comment at the truck at the top of the bluff before going to put out some posted signs for the Landowner. Putting out the signs where he wanted them required me to go through the bottom area by where my #1 stand has been. I went on into the bedding area on the trail I've been watching and I found the mother lode of scrapes. Old ones, fresh ones, but mostly BIG ones. Wow! It's the hub.

I'd love to hunt a little closer to it but the winds are so tough in the bottom. They're usually the opposite of the top and change around from 90 degree scent cones on a calm day to 360 degrees on breezy days. Crazy tough to hunt it. I know I should stay away and hunt the fringe like I have been doing, but man is that spot tough to resist. The best way I could make of it is to set a ground blind on the other side of the dry run another 70 yards away and camp out during the gun season on a calmer day.

Did I mention three of the main trails leading into it have big apple trees?

Spent all day Saturday up in the deer woods by Hackensack. Found two small rubs and that was it. Spots that are normally heavy with rubs and scrapes haven't seen a thing. Still TONS of foliage on the trees yet. Seems more like mid September than mid October.

Lot of rubs and scrapes starting to show up, I imagine most of it is from the eager young bucks. But I still get excited from seeing rubs, I don't know why but I like seeing them.

Hunted Cannon Falls area yesterday with a buddy and found only one fresh rub (from the small 8 pt. on the camera)and only one small scrape after checking most of the property.

I did put out a "Sticknstring Mock Scrape" grin and hope to have a chance to check it on Wednesday. I'm seeing more daytime doe activity on the cameras but the buck activity has slowed on my trail cams.

I watched a small 6 point chase a doe and two fawns around this morning. Unfortunately I saw this action in my front yard, under the yard light. I saw nothing but trees when I sat on the stand.

Is this sign you all are seeing as you're going back and forth to your stand? I always thought it was best to walk minimally in my hunting area so as not to disturb the deer that are or will be there. I haven't seen any sign yet, but I haven't walked any of the trails I do in the summer because I'm hoping not to scare the deer away. Last year I did end up seeing some scrapes and rubs from my stand, but that was the first time that ever happened.

Saw 2 bachelor groups of bucks with 4 bucks in each group in the last 3 days. On the other hand, I've seen half dozen small scrapes and a dozen or more rubs in a 3 mile area. Deer activity has been much more active in the last couple days as well. Though I think it has a lot to do with the corn coming off in areas.

Last night I sat on a field point. Had does/fawns on one side of the field and a small group of small bucks on the other side. they eventually fed toward each other but showed no interest or signs of pre-rut activity. The normal field edge scrapes are not there yet either.

For me it's just observations made while walking to and from my stands that are already set. Last weekend my helping the Landowner required me to skirt the edge of the bedding area I'm set up near, which I normally don't ever like to walk through or even let my scent drift through. I fulfilled my obligation last thing before heading home and wasn't planning on being back for at least two weeks.

Shoulda went fishing or bird hunting last weekend and will be doing that this weekend. I don't plan to be back in the stand before the 26th.

Only a week & a half away from all heck breaking loose! This is what we wait for all year!

Yes Sir! I have been saving my vacation days and have stayed out of my really good funnels spots. Getting a little bit excited just typing this!

I walked into an area yesterday morning I have been scouting for the youth hunt. On my way in, I saw 5 scrapes that all were partly covered with leaves. We left the woods about 9am and returned at approx 3:30 or so. All the scapes were opened up so I am sure a buck was checking while we were at home.

Last week I found a couple scrapes but this week, double the scrapes, I do not believe the rut is too far off, maybe 2 weeks at the most.

Going to try and rattle one in later today for my granddaughter.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
