LX3 experts question?

walleyereaper

Question

I just picked up a new marcum and was very happy with it the first two times I used it. Then the third time I had it out it started to flutter or jitter quite a bit. What I mean by jitter is when I would adjust the gain to where my lure is a fine yellow line, the line would bounce back and forth between two or three lines up and down, and so would the red fish marks. Everything on the dial would jitter more than I can remember it doing the first two times I had it out. I tried everthing to get rid of it from adjusting the gain, raising and lowering the ducer, putting on the IR, turning it on and off. Since I am new to sonar maybe this is normal? It was very annoying and I am wondering if I have a faulty unit. I was fishing on LOW the day it gave me problems and there were no other people by me.

I have used mine at 30% power and never experienced that problem. I would contact Marcum in Monti and see what they say. There is some "bounce" if you are moving the jig quick in zoom at 20 to 40 foot settings. I have seen the same thing on Vex 18. What does the bottom look like? I would say if it is bouncing when not in zoom it must be picking up way to much interfer and I would have them fix / replace it.

Walleyereaper, since you just got the unit you might try letting it sit on the charger for 24 hours or so.On the first charge of the battery you need to let it charge for awile, after that it should only take 6-8 hours charging if you used it a full day.Hope this helps, love that lx-3,great service to.Good fishing Don grin.gif

The bottom lock was good but I think the other noise bounces MUCH more than it did the first two times. It was like the ping from the ducer was'nt as fast as it was before and everything was flickering and leaving trails. And yes I hit the IR multiple times, and the battery was just off a 48 hr charge.

I know exactly what your talking about.Allthough both the Marcum and the Vex are succeptible to this effect, the Marcum does it much less than the Vex.One of the reasons I went with Marcum this year.
I am not positive but I think it is caused by variations in water density or temperature. It also shows up in deeper depths. Its normal and happens to all flashers.

Hiya,
Dennis is right on, I think. It's just some wierd convergence of conditions near as I can tell. Used to happen with my old Lowrance 2330s on the ice once in a while too. Only happened to me once with my LX-3 in two years of pretty steady use. If it happens consistently you might have a problem, but it's likely just one of those oddball things.

I also experienced the "jitter" while up on Red last weekend. I purchased the unit 2 days before, and everything seemed fine. Got up there, and started using it. First night she was fine. The second day, the jitter started. I couldn't stand it. Tried everything. Even switched to a new battery. Same thing. Luckily I had my FL-18... she worked flawlessly. The Marcum's going back!

FISHNCHESTER- I would return it. I have not had a jitter in two years of using my LX-3's. Red Lake is not deep enough to have any major thermal changes. Sounds like you have a bad unit or something.

Did you guys ever get problem fixed, or just return them? I am having the same problem, only mine changed in the middle of use the first time out. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Loved it up until then. Buddy had one and his worked great. I e-mailed Marcum customer service and they said they haven't heard of that problem before, and that I should return to the retailer or exchange it directly with them. Have to say the fast response from the service dept was more than could be asked for.

Yes,I returned mine for a new one and could'nt be happier. The new one works great. If they told you they have'nt heard of this problem then they must not be data basing their complaints because I talked to a service rep last week about mine.

I just called Cabela's and ordered another one. Will be sending this one back. Thanks for posting comments, otherwise I would have probably kept and been frustrated with mine.

When the FL-18's bottom was jumping around in the AZ mode and I called to talk to them about it they hadn't heard about it either. Yet, we had been discussing it for months on this site. Lots of people called, returned units, etc. Finally, after enough people called they recognized the problem and we all had to send our units in for an update.

What I am saying is because 1, 2 or 4 people have the same problem it is not necessarily a problem with the unit. Possibly just a bad unit. MarCum will certainly recognize the problem if more complaints or problems come in. My guess is you may have just got a lemon. It happens no matter what you buy.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
