Big Rice has was a b*ch to paddle.  I didn’t miss it this weekend and won’t miss it any other weekend I don’t make it there.

it be tougher just getting on that lake right now. the landing is totally plugged up with what looks like a floating cattail bog. you'd have to walk across that bog to get a watercraft into the lake!!!!!!!!!!! on mt way home i did see what looked like a couple duck hunters turning in there!!!!!!

There is another launch on the other side of the lake, which is a lot nicer.

We improved our own this year.  Cut some stumbles outta the way, put some plastic pallets down over the soft spots, used a big shipping pallet for a “dock” and improved our slide in/out landing on the bog.

Even with all that, I bet we don’t go out there more than 2-3 times this fall.  And that’s counting the opener already.  Unlike last year, I have some other hunts planned.  If I get a deer before gun opener I can at least chase ducks in November.

Gotta have goals, right?

Still gotta pull all the stuff back off the bog before freeze up too.  It’s a lotta work to stay away from motors anymore. Derp.

Where is this chair??? I found a hospital commode made into a chair on a shoreline, is that it???

At the Hwy 6 access on the west side.  In the willows on the south side of the access.  Full blown easy chair.

You found a commode on Big Rice?  It might be handy to know that is. 😉

Commode is on Kramer. They took the seat off and flipped a lunch tray upside down and screwed it on. Even has adjustable legs. Sat on it one day about an hour later I realized what it was

Rice South of Remer?

I'm like 10 mins north of Rapids but trying to move up to the Marcel area

that kramer, is that north of rapids on 38??? drive by there now and then. pretty neat looking lake. isnt that one no live bait also??? theres a few lakes in that stretch i think are trout lakes and no live bait.

think its actually called big rice lake. i got to know the couple that own Wheezy outdoors pretty well. stop there now and again and i asked him  about big rice. big shallow and one deeper hole that gets pounded in the winter time. i also asked him about the lake just north of him, has a public access and the wayside rest said thats a tough lake to fish!!!!

Kettle.......any luck finding a place around Marcell???????

No minnows but crawlers. Yea, I'm familiar with Big rice, scouted it for ducks but never hunted it.

Have not found a place yet. Hoping early next year find a year round Rental then but land next spring and build in spring of 2025. Hoping for 5-10 wooded acers. Lakeshore and property taxes are just so high

I have a friend that’s been looking for an “affordable” lake home somewhere between Brainerd and Baudette to I falls.  He has struck out all summer on anything that doesn’t have some sort of serious problems.  He says a lot of em go same day as listed and sight unseen to investors/rental companies.

He said he’s about given up looking around the Chippewa.  Best of luck to ya Kettle!  Hope you find something good!

I just turned down a job in I Falls that I hope I don’t come to regret.  I don’t have any ties to I Falls though so I don’t know what I might be missing.  Wife wasn’t keen on it anyway.  But I gotta say it was intriguing to think about.  I never thought I’d have a chance to be that close to Canada with a good paying job.

Lake homes are impossible to get these days so just a few acers and either build or modular is the goal.

International Falls is a nice area but could be tough on a family. Town has shrunk in population over the past years and if you need something and you can't get it in town you either order it or do the nearly 3 hr drive to Duluth.

Most towns like some claim to fame but being the Icebox of the Nation doesn’t exactly ring the bell of I want to live there.

I’m pretty happy where I’m at now.  Small town feel, friendly people, most needs can be met in town but big box stores and fancy restaurants (if you’re into that) aren’t far away.

I've driven past that thing many times over the years and it looks immense.  It looks like great waterfowl habitat when I drive by, but being so big I have to imagine you can't just go set up anywhere and expect to get shooting.  I'm sure there are very specific spots they favor and that is constantly changing.

Accurate assessment.  There are definite flight paths that have taken me some time to figure out.  Seeing birds is not a problem.  Getting within GOOD shooting range and dropping them where they’re recoverable is though.

With the amount of sky busting that goes on the birds don’t decoy worth a c r a p, so it’s basically pass shooting. You can go out and see birds, shoot a bunch of shells and come back with nothing if you don’t do your homework.

Went way far west from previous trips. Got a few specks and snows. Very few ducks but the cranes saved the trip.

Headed back out walleye fishing around Rapids tomorrow and grouse hunting on Monday. Best time of the year then end of the month back to Canada to chase ducks

Temps on a lot of lakes are mid 50s. I leave for Canada again Saturday. I plan on keeping the boat ready until I have to push it across the ice on the shore to get in. Really hoping we don't have ice before Thanksgiving this year. Winters get too long.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week has been the ongoing deer hunting season and/or watching the forecast and feeling optimistic about the cold temps over the next couple of weeks.     The forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should make some ice and get things started,   The limited number of anglers still fishing are taking advantage of fairly mild weather for November, but that is changing quickly.  Good numbers of walleyes, saugers and a lot of jumbo perch are staged across the south shore which bodes well for ice fishing.   No surprise this time of year, vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.     Resorts and outfitters are busy, continually getting ready for the ice fishing season.  Fish house maintenance, light ice rigs, bombardiers, track rigs, augers, fish houses, sleeper houses, permitting, deep cleaning, remodeling, and the list goes on.  All good stuff that helps to make the ice fishing season more enjoyable. On the Rainy River...  Very good fishing reports for those on the river this week, and there have been a few boats.  Limits of walleyes was the norm for most. Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners.    Having good numbers of walleyes in the river is desired by those who ice fish the south shore.  It is believed some of the walleyes in the river make their way out to the lake as the ice fishing season progresses, providing additional fish to ice anglers out in front of Pine Island.  All good stuff. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are finishing up deer hunting, processing venison or getting ready for the upcoming ice fishing season.  For the few that got out, reports were excellent.  A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing for those who braved the colder temps.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Late fall is known as a good time to catch muskies and this year has held true. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.  Day houses normally get out mid December with an extended season on LOW, lasting through March.  Mother Nature always dictates.  Resorts and outfitters will be monitoring ice conditions, posting weight limits throughout the year.

They are quite the dog. He's an absolute machine, well trained, never breaks early. They have a reputation for being stubborn and mean but that dog is just friendly and would hunt everyday all day if he could. Fortunate that he comes with on the trips we go on.

My buddy has a Chesapeake retriever but we don't bring him with crane hunting for that reason. They have an affinity for stabbing dogs eyes out. Typically if they aren't completely dead when they hit the ground they don't run like geese. I typically hit em with my barrel and that finishes them. I've had them try and stab me or kick me with their spurs. We killed one goose hunting with my buddies dog and it was dead. He wouldn't pick it up just barked at it. Must smell way different than ducks. I guess they have mites but haven't noticed them. Never seen them on them or the meat and never see "rice breast" on them. My buddies dog is named teddy after Teddy Roosevelt. He went 231/232 ducks and geese retrieves this year.

Kettle... remembering you shot sandhills,, my brother was saying a friend of his does alot of waterfowl hunting also. He has told people he hunts with if they get a sandhill anywhere near his dogs he'd do serious bodily harm to them.   This guy claims sandhill cranes are  flea infested creatures.    You have any ideas? It's just what he was told

@11-87   Shop the Burris line here. https://www.burrisoptics.com/   You can mount a red dot on top of a regular scope if you want but they also off lighted reticles in some of their standard scopes.   Impressive lineup of optics that have come a long way since I last looked.  Drop Tine is their economy line.  I’m probably going to look at the mid level Signature HD.   Lifetime warranty on all models.
