Yes, they did say the tribe could net when they allowed a harvest anyway they saw fit s long as it was part of their cultural heritage. Netting was part of the agreement as I read it.

The courts, in fact, in no form or fashion, ordered, listed or otherwise, the form and timing of the Tribal harvest. All those details were, by court order, agreed upon between the Mn. and the Tribal side after the courts affirmed the right to harvest via the treaty. That is all the courts did. Affirm the rights. Not the harvest details. The court, in fact, went with what the Mn,. DNR agreed to. Period. You can not show any court document that listed forms of harvest nor timing of it. Period. You can show documents that show what the DNR and GLIFWC agreed to, nothing more. The MN. DNR was given ample opportunity to fight the gill-netting and the timing of it by the court. They chose not to and still do so today.

Well you can point all the fingers you want. It doesn't change anything. The fact remains that successful fishing outings are measured by most by what you can take home. And that includes me. The last outing saw plenty of fish caught by that lakes standards and none in the live well. I am not a guide, just a regular guy who gets up there a few times a year and likes a little reward for the beating that lake can dish out. As for me and my buddies anyway, we are done with that lake for the year. And really not too pumped about next year either. Not good for the resorts or other businesses but that's just how it all shakes out. Point all the fingers you want. It doesn't change anything. And that's not perception, that's reality.

Northender....let me explain what I mean when I say we are all to blame ....

We are all to blame to let what has happened to the lake. The netting, spearing and pure raping of the resource by a a select race of people....should never have happened.

As soon as I heard that it was remotely going to happen on ML, I told my wife that it will destroy the lake. See, I lived it in WI when it all started in the 80's. My parents had a cabin on lake lacerne near crandon. It was an awesome lake, etc....the lake went down the tubes after it was speared. Never has been what it once was. Resorts died and the property around the lake suffered too....just like what is happening on ML.

Again, we are to blame because we the people did not fight enough to stop it. And look at what we have - a lake that is so out of balance that the DNR or anybody else does not know what to do next.

Or maybe we should let the lake continue to get hammered and then take all of the sportsmans $$ and stock the [PoorWordUsage] out it....just like red lake.....thats another story though!

Lastly, the DNR opens the smallie fishing to catch and keep - to help with the eye population....what a joke. Te smallie fishing out there is great. I hope we (the sportsman who fish the lake) don't let that fishery die too. It should be all catch and release for the brownies.

I have guided in the Brainerd area for over 25+ years. I have seen ML at its best. It makes me sick to see her in the shape she is in now.

Like they said on TV its not that the fishing is bad its the 2 inch slot and the shortage of keepers for a fish fry that is keeping people away. As long as the netting continues and the current regulations stay the same I don't see the lake getting any better or more people fishing there. I used to fish the lake a lot and haven't fished it once this year. Next Wednesday I will be driving by headed to LOW where I can catch a lot more fish and have a fish fry and bring home a limit and have a chance at catching a true trophy walleye which I will CPR.

I'm not sure but I dont think the DNR has the revnue that the casino generates

Going to the supreme court is not cheap

I have said before dont spend my tax dollars over there let it go and let the netters manage and take care of it

see how long it takes before they want to restock it

then they can go to the casino and get the money

and again you cant fool with mother nature and there are way to many finer in the pot trying to fix something that just cant be fixed

while tons of spawning fish are taken out of the lake year after year

Pretty simple to find if you study how Native American Sovereign Nation governments are run and funded, not excluding the MN. Tribal gov's. They actually receive more Federal $$ now than before the Casino's were built. Lot's of smoke and mirrors to show otherwise though. Almost all Tribal Government function here and nationally is funded by various means (Federal $$)except Casino income.

GLIFWC, who does the netting at Mille Lacs, is solely funded by many millions of $$ each year by the Fed's.

FYI--The original Mille Lacs case on the Tribal side was funded by U.S. Tax $$, solely.

Cant stand the heat?...get out of the kitchen.

I have an idea. How about 1,000,000 US citizens residing in the state of Minnesota not buying a fishing license next year ( I meant to say, not paying the fishing tax) That would get Gov. Goofy's attention!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
