We are coming up to Big Boy the week after July 4th. Never have been there and would appreciate any and all tips you can provide. Where do we find the Bass, Walleye, Crappie, etc. Day fishing or night etc. Whatever advice you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!!!

Been a few years since I have fished Big Boy but I know they have good largemouth. The lake is shapped somewhat like a U. We stayed at Timber Trails. If you head out of Timber Trails to the left (not sure which direction) you will end up going around the bottom of the U There used to be a ton of weeds/reeds which almost formed an island. Did very well there on bass. Keep going past it and I believe the point is pretty rocky and had good structure. I know there is decent walleye fishing, however I'm not much of a resource in that regard. Nice lake. Good luck!

No problem, not much traffic on this site. I know there are good numbers of smaller northerns and even some Muskie. Dad is on different lake 10 miles west having luck with walleyed on leeches.

Fished for years out of Timber Trails resort and had success all over the lake. From Maple Trails resort, head across the northern basin of the lake and work that shoreline in 12-15 ft of water, particularly morning and evening. On the south side of the lake work the shoreline past the point to the east of timber trails. At dusk, the flats right in front of timber trails is good for walleye.

Thanks Jaypo! Looked at the area across from Maple Trails. I'm sure we will try that a few times. Will also check the spot you mentioned by Timber Trails. Do you know if you can go up and down stream on the Boy River to the lakes on the river?

We are only 10 days out!!! Does anyone have anymore information that might be helpful while we are fishing Boy Lake. Has anyone been on the lake recently? Any and all info is appreciated! Thanks

I was just up there two weeks ago. It was my first time on the lake and It might have been the most odd fishing experience of my life. I often target bass and from other reports I had seen along with pictures from the Timber Trails website, I thought I would be pulling em in left and right. I did NOT find one bass over the 4 days spent on the water. mad I did find a lot of rock bass but I was looking for large mouth.

I know the season is kind of messed up from our late winter/short spring, but it is rare that I am skunked when targeting bass. I fished from shore out to 30ft and could not find em. Hopefully you will have better luck if you are looking for bass.

We did find A LOT of pike. We pulled cranks along the weed lines in about 10-11 fow. Largest pike was 36". There is no shortage of them. Probably caught 50+ over the 4 days.

We did find a few walleye. Some by jigging in 10 fow with minnows and leeches in the morning and some by pulling cranks and lindy rigs along the weed line in the evening. One area was just to the right/NE from Timber Trails. The rest were just across the lake from the resort, again right on the weed line.

We also found some very nice, chunky sunnies and crappies jigging with minnows and leeches. One crappie was over a pound. I didn't measure it but it was huge.

The highlight of the trip came as we were trolling the weed lines in the morning. I had grabbed the wrong rod when we left the dock and was rigged with 12lb fluorocarbon line pulling a crank. This little guy decided to make the morning very entertaining. shocked

It measured 42". This is my first muskie and obviously the biggest but it may also be the biggest I will ever catch. And no, I did not eat it. We happened to be close to our dock so I brought him in to show my wife and daughter. He was released to swim another day.

As far as bass go, I searched all the places that I thought would hold bass but if anyone has any ideas, please help a guy out. I am going back up there again in early August so maybe the bass will show up this time. I did not try any part of the lake north of the channel. Maybe that should be my first move next time.

I am heading up to timber trails monday morning and staying for the week. I hope I can get you a report as well dakota.1950. Im very interested on how we will do. My main targets will be bass and some walleyes as well. And thanks mudpuppy for the info as in it will benefit me as well.

MudPuppy good report and awesome fish! To all, if you get a big musky or pike do not hold them upright from the jaw like pictured. It is bad for big fish to hold them like that and can cause mortality. Hold under the jaw with one hand and support the belly with the other hand.

Did you have any other muskies follow while pitching for bass?

Feathers, I think of that every time I look at the picture. This was the biggest fish I have ever caught and was rather excited. I should know better than not to hold such a large fish that way. I am an avid fisherman and mostly practice catch and release. You gave good advice and I will certainly remember for next time that I need to support the belly.

I did not have any other follows as far as I know. I did catch a 36" pike as well but I did not see any other muskie.

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
