Honeymoon on/around North shore-need ideas!

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, as the title says, we will be honeymooning on the North shore the first week in June. Both of us are outdoorsy so we will be camping and such. Any ideas off the beaten path, etc.? I have thought about doing a fishing charter but it is pretty spend for only 2 people. Any other ideas? Thanks

How rustic you want to go. Kinda rustic but walking to distance to Finland MN is the Finland Campground. You want to get away, a bit more Hogback Lake(trout lake) and there are all sorts of smaller campgrounds off the beaten path, there is Temperance River Campground(not the state park) on the Sawbill trail. All depends on what you are looking for. Those I listed are absolutely no frills. Lots of hiking and I hear they have a couple zip lines up in the Grand Marais/Gunflint area now.

Without knowing exactly what you want I'd go here and look at the campgrounds.

www.reserveamerica.com You'll want to get a reservation in for sure.

Then Google private campgrounds and again get your reservation in.

With a private campground you stand a good chance there will be showers too.

You could always day trip to the North Shore to sight see and hike.

The State Parks have rustic cabins. Primitive, but nice and usually in a more remote setting within the Park. Check the MN State Parks website. If you want out-in-the-woods camping the BWCA is right there. Check the US Forest Service website. There are several outfitters on the Gunflint Trail that can do full or partial equipment setups. The Gunflint Resorts will also do combo vacations consisting of a week reservation at the resort and outfitting for day trips or an overnighter into the B-Dub.

Surface Tension pointed out the Isabella area which is an often overlooked area that is IMO one of the most beautiful areas in the region. There are minimal services around, but some of the resorts and bars have the best cheeseburgers made in America. This area would be a nice day trip from the north shore.

It's been a few years (24 to be exact!) but we camped the Gunflint area for our honeymoon, after getting married on the rocks at Palisade Head and having our reception at Split rock state park. (total cost for the wedding/reception locations...20 bucks:)

As I kind of remember, we drove north first, spent a couple days at Ester Lake, then went up the trail and stayed at Iron Lake campground (fished portage lake for splake). Then down thru Isabella area and finished it off at Hogback lake, camping on Scarp. This was back in the days of good moooseing up there, and we saw a bunch, as well as caught a lot of fish.

Fished Hogbeck out of Isabella last summer and caught a beautiful 5 lb splake out of that lake plus some nice rainbows. Looks like the campground was decent. Beautiful lake and remote yet you can drive to it.
