Mille Lacs 1st timers...

Hey guys/gals,

I will be headed up to the Big Pond this Friday with a few buddies for 3 days. This will be all of our first times on Mille Lacs. We will be out on the southwest end. We will likely be targeting perch and tullies with walleyes being bonus catches. We're not new to ice fishing, but Mille Lacs for sure. My question is what type of bait or jig colors have been the ticket to targeting each type of species? Or what type of structure to look for during daytime/nighttimes bites? Suggestions/tips will be helpful. We would like to put a few fish on the ice and enjoy Mille Lacs before the walleye season comes to a close that Sunday. If you would like you cam PM me. Thanks in advance. Tight lines!!

Tengy.

On the west side of the lake is where I usually fish. I usually go out to the 7mile flats. Anyone of the flats will be about the same. Over there, you can catch all of what you are looking for. Get a good map of Mill Lacs and a gps if you don't already have one. It's different everyday out there (just like any other lake). Sometimes they prefer small bait, sometimes big. So my recommendation is bring a little of everything if you can. I usually find that fish are most active in the early morings til about 10am, and then again in the afternoon til about an hour or two after dark. But that's just my experience. Some folks may have different opinions about that.

For tullibees, use a sweedish pimple or kastmaster with a leader line and plain hook tipped with a waxie or eurolarvae.

For walleyes and perch, I have found a plain red hook with a crappie or shiner or fathead to work. But sometimes I change it up with a glow green demon head for darker times.

The most important thing to remember is:

Stay away from the crowds. Just because there are a lot of houses bunched together, doesn't mean they're catching all the fish. cool

Be safe and Have Fun!

I should add too that dead sticks for me are the way to go.

Jig if you want, but I like to relax and sip on my adult beverage.

We fished a rock reef on the south end. Top of the reef is 9 feet and it drops into 30 feet. We've been fishing an 18" ledge. Been doing ok on Walleyes and Northerns. Dead stick with number 6 red hooks and pink jigs. Fat heads and shiners. Haven't seen any perch.

As someone else said, do your best to avoid crowds. There's plenty of excellent water on the lake, and getting away from folks will increase your chances of doing well. Those shanty towns are in those spots for a good reason--there are fish there--but you've gotta share them with everyone else.

If I had to choose between an awesome piece of structure with houses on it and an average piece of structure that I had all to myself, I'd go with the average structure, especially if it was away from any roads.

That being said, up until last week, I'd been having an amazing year fishing quite close to a shanty town (I swear...I was there first!). Last weekend was terrible, and if it wasn't the last weekend of the season coming up--and if I wasn't so terribly lazy--I'd probably move. But alas, we'll see if the fish can find me. smile

Make sure you have some shiners and rainbows to put on set lines. The big baits this year have been catching big fish. 28 to 32 feet of water was hot for me two weeks ago and havent been up since. Pink Gem-n-eyes were absolutely hands down the jig to have on a set line when I was up. And a gold and pink macho minnow. Couldnt agree more with Carmike. Stay away from crowds. There are so many good flats on Mille lacs find one that doesnt have a ton of people on it. And if you not marking fish move or the fish arent active.... MOVE. GOOD LUCK

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
