I'm sure that some of you who post here must have your own permanent house on the lake. What do you do for off seasson storage, and will any of the resorts work with you (for a fee) to pull the house on and off the lake? Good luck and hang on. Bill

Great Question Bill,<P>I am working at getting (hopefully building) one for next season. I hope you get lots of feed-back on this thread.

Dr Bob: I bought one with my son last night from a friend of ours who now has it on Mille Lacs. It is 10x16 with four bunks and all the bells and whistles. We want to bring it to LOW. I would probably still spend my evenings at Riverbend however due to the lack of night bite, hot showers and good food. I really don't want to truck it all the way up if there is a problem with finding someone looking for some extra cash for storage etc in the off season. I would even consider allowing a reliable person to rent it out when we're not there and let them keep the rental fees in exchange for the services. These are just some thoughts. I'm headed up a week from today and will talk to Glenn at Riverbend and see what he thinks. How big of a house are you looking at building? Bill

<BR> Adrian's Resort provides the services you mentioned. You'll have to check with them for rates and other details. There maybe others, the LOW Tourism Bureau could probably give other names. LOL

WCT: Thanks for the input. Next week I will be right next to them and will stop and find out the particulars. Bill

Bill<BR>I know long point also has that service, as well as babler's. I've stored mine at bablers for the past number of years for I think was is $50 this year. Hope this helps and good fishin!!

Bill<BR>Yes, if you let Richard know your house, he will plow your you out if needed(I think this will be for an extra fee--around $10-15--) but he plows regularly to the reefs so he'll keep you happy. If you let him know in advance he will take your house off also. I see you post quite a bit, have you had any luck this year yet??

Whats the widest house you can legally transport on a road? I thought it was 8' but I could be wrong.

Posted

Northlander,<BR>You can tranport up to 9' with out signs and flashing lights. That is fedarel law should know this quite weel with being a over the road driver and hauling equpiement here in Wis and MN.<BR>My self I am looking to buy a sleeper house or a 6 man day fish house.Been watching the postings for cost of one.Would like also like to know how much will it cost to build one.Any information would be greatfull

Bill, congrats on the new ice pad ! Nothing like hard walls to lean against and shirt sleeve weather inside ! I had a perm. one out of Richards when his uncle run it , Franks road and had Richard store it a couple years too, he will help if he can I'm sure. It was $30 but that was 10 years ago. <BR>I'm by L. Falls so if you want help some wkend following you up let me know.<BR>You may want to call the DOT about if you need a permit, 8'6" is legal width and I believe it's a liability thing with no permit even if it's no fault of yours in a accident.. <P>

Reefer: No I have not been up yet this year. finished the pheasant hunting in So Dakota last, now the holidays this week. I am headed up next week on Sunday morning thru Wed for the first time. Sounds like the bite is good. Thanks for the info you provided.<P>I just got off the phone with my son and we are discussing which way to go on this deal. The house is on Mille Lacs and belongs to a good friend of ours. He has 3 boys in hockey and the winters are booked solid, but not on the right kind of ice. This is a 10x16 house with four bunks, 4 burner apartment size stove, new heating and really very nice. I've fished out of it several times. the price is right, now the decision to leave it on Mille Lacs or truck it to LOW. It does not have wheels so we would bring it up on a trailer. My son has a friend in the excavating business and the equipment would not be a problem as far as moving. I definitley know which lake I prefer the question is do want the house that far away (4 1/2 hour drive) even though I have four trips booked already it would definitley mean quite a few more to justify the fact that its there......darn decision making.....<P>Buckets: thanks for your input as well. I will let you know which way we are going in the event additional help is needed. Bill<BR>

Buckets,<BR>just looked it up in the truckers book. You can haul up to 9' with out a permit.Any trailer over 10' or object over 10' needs sgins, flashing lights and permits. If you don't belive me call your local D.O.T. office, and they well tell you what you need.I<BR>am a truck driver,I do haul equipement here in Wi and into Mn.Also ran flat bed over the road.

Hey Bill,<P>The answer is: AS BIG AS I CAN grin.gif.

Reefer: Will they also assist in taking the house off or helping to move it in the event of a lot of snow, or moving from one location to another during the season? Thaks, Bill

Jeez, Bob, so size really DOES matter? grin.gif<P>------------------<BR>"Worry less, fish more."<BR>Steve Foss<BR> [email protected]

L. Perch, didn't mean to step on toes just trying to help.. It was my livelyhood a couple years back too. I lowboyed heavy equip. around the seven surrounding states. Had to permit any thing over legal dimensions and was ticketed once for being 9' wide running in inclement weather (even with a permit) <BR>Bill, I ran number 6 out of Crosby the last time, real nice quiet road but I would avoid it at night now, thick woods. But if you permitted it the permit is only good for daylight and good weather.

Thanks to everybody for the input on this subject. If we do decide the LOW is the lake to take it to we would put it onto a trailer that is designed to haul a large skid loader. Just to be on the safe side I would definitley call DOT and run the front and rear escort if needed. Still in the decision process.<P>Dr Bob: Maybe I should just bring this house to LOW and then sell it to you!!!! Would save you some nailing...Good luck and hang on guys. Bill

Buckets,<BR>There is no hard feelings on this side of the fence. And there is no sore toes eather.it is shure neat to hear someone in the same industery who like to fish the big lake also.Got one quick question.Do you still drive big truck yet any more? All I do is run quad dumptruck here in Wi,shure less headacks, and less pesty dot boys.Any ways Mreyy Xmas and happy year

No, I had to give it up 3 yrs ago. Some ahole's practical joke left me with serious back and neck trouble. I really loved it though, haul out the old and bring in the new, it was like being Santa at times ha. Really see and hear a lot of things on the road too, it was great while it lasted.<BR>Good luck to you and keepem turnin! <P>Bill, a final thought on the house. Seems like you may be a little new to this. Big house's can be a real pain up there. I've seen guys do a lot of damage to vechicles trying to move them. Make darn sure it has very good skids under it, sometimes the only way to get them in was to trailer them cause of deep wet snow in the spring.<BR>

I just moved my house from mille lacs to Red. it is WAY to expensive to kept it at mille lacs any more for the fishing that offerd. I paid $600 last year to get a pull out and off. I figured that at red I can catch crappies once in a while and when they open it up to walleye again I can't wait!!! we catch more of those darn things fishing for crappies than you'd believe. 40-60 a day each is not uncommon. plus red is only an hour for LOW and we fish there during the day and head back to red at night not bad. just a thought for you to consider/.

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff!  Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
