How's the snow cover on the ground in the area? We're thinking about coming up to check on the place and I'm wondering if I'll be able to even get in the driveway. It hasn't been plowed at all this winter.

We've lost about all our snow down here and it didn't take long. Our last dump was 9 inches or so on the 4th it was gone in just a few days. The river is up and people are doing yard work.

Where is the place you're checking on?? Still quite a bit of snow on any unplowed roads and wooded areas.

There is at least a foot and a half of snow in the woods in the Tower area yet.

I took my plow off the truck and didn't think I wanted to drive 4 hours with it on. Thought about putting the JD 318 with the blower on the trailer with the wheeler but maybe I still need the dang sleds!!

GO, I'm in the Garden Lake Road area.

Tracy, you're going to need some tracked vehicle on a road that hasn't been plowed. With the weather forecast the next 4 days, it doesn't look like the snow is going away anytime soon.

Yah, we'll see how it goes. She said she was looking at the webcams and town looked fine! crazy

Sooooooooooo.............

How are the trails? grin

Was really hoping to have a decent weekend and chase some crappies. Somewhere.

Thanks Jim and Cliff.

Tell her not to believe any web cams, unless it's on the road you're heading for!!! gringringrin

A group of guys from the cities were up last weekend, and couldn't believe the amount of snow compared to where they just came from.

Nothing has melted the last two days, and it isn't looking any better before Saturday. cry

Your next words should be, "Let us pray" and hope we don't get any of the stuff hitting Duluth and the north shore.

Ely is directly between the weather advisory and winter weather warning.

Just thought you should know that I took the plow off my truck, mooned Mother Nature while shouting, "Tracy says, bring it on, Bimbo!!"

Gee, hope I didn't create any bad Karma, Bro!! gringringringrin

Karma knows where I live; the snow is in the process of passing the 12 inch mark in my yard right now. crazy

Wet, heavy and coming down at least an inch an hour. The blower was having a dang hard time with it. The plow is unhooked and in its summer resting place.

Did you point that moon of yours south? I heard stories about a red moon lately.

Sorry to hear about the snow, Bro, but we're getting it up here too! cry

I'm going to have to launch one big sneeze to blow the 1/16th inch or less off my car in the morning!! gringringrin

As of this afternoon, none of the marker buoys have been put out yet. With the high water, the lake is very dangerous to drive on unless you are very familiar with it.

Be careful!!

They were dropping markers on sunday, but it didn't look like they finished, as the pontoon was parked in the lot at the end of the day with a bunch of markers still onboard.

As far as a fishing report goes, not much of one. Didn't catch any lakers...barely even marked any. We didn't mark any smelt either, are they all spawning now or what? Got to see a lot of the lake though, more than I planned, as we got lost while trying to find a particular pair of islands I thought would be good for casting for lakers blush

I did catch a 35 inch pike, as well as two other 5 pounders, lost another that looked to be about 5. Also caught 1 smallie. Bass were definitely not in the shallows yet.

Fished Snowbank the day before and it was much the same. No lakers, only 1 pike and 1 largemouth bass.

Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 3:02 PM CDT on June 21, 2014

...Flood Warning remains in effect for northern Koochiching and extreme northwestern St. Louis counties until 400 am CDT Monday...

At 300 PM CDT...Koochiching County officials reported flooding continues along Rainy Lake and along the rat root river at ericksburg. St. Louis County law enforcement reported flooding and the inundation of docks on Kabetogama Lake. Sand bagging operations continue along the southern and Eastern Shore of Rainy Lake near International Falls.

Rainy Lake continues a slow rise and is expected to slowly rise through the weekend...with an eventual crest predicted in mid July. Inflows to the lake have stabilized and gauge readings are indicating slow recessions on Namakan Lake near Kettle Falls and Kabetogama Lake at Gold Portage. However...the majority of flow comes from Canada which received widespread heavy rain last week. That volume of water continues moving through the system and into Rainy Lake.

Any new reports? Is the water high up there also?

Yup, but dropping slightly on Burntside. Lake temps are still cooler than normal.

I'm curious to know as well. I'll be up there next week. Things definitely have to be ahead of last year's pace.

I haven't been out yet on Burntside and haven't heard anything but did see some nice pictures in the Echo of a couple of nice lakers and a dandy walleye taken on the opener. It has been rainy, cold and windy with snow falling on and off all yesterday afternoon. I see no reason to fish in that weather. Warmer weather is on the way and the sun is out today!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
