I know one of the people involved. I will have info for all of us as soon as I hear. Kinda freaks me out a little.

Pretty scary deal.Hope everyone is OK.Im actually surprised this doesnt happen more often with all the houses being dragged around or going up and down the road with fuel lines at least partially inside that very raerly get checked.

I was out fishing by the reefs one year and heard a pop and seen part of a permanant house flying in the air.Surpriseingly no one got hurt.

Three of the 5 men are my relatives. They have all been transferred to a burn unit and are on the mend. All of the men are over 18. Two of the five are still in very critical condition. The other three have burns and injuries but are in stable condition. The cause of the explosion has not been clear as of this point. Prayers are needed for these long time lake of the Woods fisherman and outdoor enthusiasts!

Prayers got out to all, hope they pull thru.

I had two ambulances go flying by me on my way out to the point in the morning. I asked someone at the bait store if they heard what happened? They said that they had heard a wheelhouse leaving for home popped off a hatch and ran into someone? Not sure if this was something else but both ambulances had they lights going on the way back down as well? confused

From the Strib:

BAUDETTE, Minn. - Five men are injured after an explosion in an ice fishing camper in northern Minnesota.

Lake of the Woods County Sheriff Gary Fish says the propane furnace exploded and blew out the windows at 8 a.m. Sunday on the shore of Lake of the Woods at Zippel Bay.

KVLY-TV reports ( http://bit.ly/TVCGnc) the victims are Rod Bolstad of Hillsboro, his sons Jacob and Joel Bolstad as well as Al Stokke and Willy Huotari.

Essentia Health spokeswoman Holly Gruber says Huotari and Rod and Jacob Bolstad were listed in critical condition Monday, Joel Bolstad was in serious condition and Stokke was in fair condition.

The men had stayed overnight in the privately owned camper-ice fishing house.

While the cause is still under investigation, authorities say they are confident the explosion was accidental.

Prayers to all!!

I was told they had issues with the regulator and used a old one to replace the B.O one. The ice house manufacture gave them a new one and tested the lines as they head up to LOTW. One of the victims woke up and lite a cigarette and boom. How they didn't smell the propane or how they didn't die from the fumes of it is beyond me...

Time to put detectors in these sleepers, man that is scary and everyone needs to learn from this!

Posted

I have both a smoke alarm and co meter alarm in my house. I always leave a window open a little and also have 3" fresh air vents up high and low. I check my lines and connections every trip. Am looking at a propane detector to add. I am praying these men all get back to ice fishing soon.

Posted

Wow

you would think if there was that much propane in there to explode like that.that you could smell it

I dont like propane or monkeying with it

that makes me even more nervous

not sure a detector would have helped chances are he wouldnt looked before he lit the cigarette.... but i spose maybe it woulda been beeping

I do know when ever I'm in a house i crack a window

dont know if that would of helped or not in this case

leech

did you catch any fish???

Got about 25 but only 4 keepers. Use fat heads the first day and a half and only got small eye's. Switched to Rainbows the last day because they were all out of shiners, and got the 4 keepers. My son-in-law and 3 buddies got over 80 fish in a sleeper over the weekend.

Back to the thread.

I really like the heaters that are sealed and only take fresh air to burn from out side and vent out side. That way no gas can get in if it leaks. eek

I seen these guys goin on at zippel on friday ....looked like a brand new carsella shack....if i remember correctly.

We Heard something south of us the lake on Sunday. Saw the fire, but didn't know what was up. Wow, that is to scary. Sure hope they are going to be fine. Best wishes, and Godspeed to them.

first off my prayers go out to these men and thier families.

a couple of questions that hopefully someone can help me with, it alarms me to here that these men were in a Carsella Shack, as I also own a Carsella Shack. I am not here to bad mouth anyone, but my experience with the people from Carsella Shacks has me very concerned that there might have been some short cuts taken and i am not about to have my daughter in our fish house until I have more peace of mind on this situation. Without knowing all the information on what caused the explosion i obviously can't assume what caused this but since i am not a handy person I thought the best thing to do would be to bring the house to a heating company to make sure there are no small leaks and that everything was installed properly. My house is currently on the south side of red lake, can anyone suggest where I should take it, or have any other advide for me. Any help is much appreciated, and again my prayers are with these guys

It sounds like the owner tried to do the right thing by having it tested by the MFG before they left? confused

I would use soapy water in a squirt bottle and check all your connections including the pilot line. Call Carsellas and see what they recommend.(I don't know what heaters they use)

If you are on Red Lake, my suggestion would be to take your house to the Cenex bulk station in Bemidji. They service propane heaters and are very reliable. Immediately when I heard the news, I checked my current house(I installed everything myself) One can never be too safe.

On my last house, I also found a leak in my pilot line getting ready for the ice season.

I wish the very best for a speedy recovery for these folks and families.

Ok the ice was 15-16 inches and less than 2 inches of snow. It’s was -15 this morning and the weekend looks to be cold again. The fish were there but not biting with change in weather.

I guess the vikings are a lot like fishing.  Very entertaining but frustrating at times. I've probably been cheering the vikings for 50 plus years  that i can remember and once again it's all about (there's always next year).

I remember Jeno's boxed pizza years ago.  Mom made it every Saturday night while dad and I watched All Star Wrestling.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is going great on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters reporting thickening ice conditions with two feet of ice in some areas.  Many ice roads are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Some good fishing this past week.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 28 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts do just about everything they can to get customers on fish and this past week, some resorts made some long runs, resetting fish houses in new areas miles off shore.  Most are reporting good fishing as a rule.     It is common to sort through some small walleyes and saugers to get your keepers on LOW.  Naturally, some big fish are showing up, especially in deeper water.  In addition, this has been a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.      Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole. In the jigging hole, a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail in gold / pink, gold / glow red, glow white / pink, or Wonder Bread have worked well.     Especially in the deeper water, some anglers are finding success on rippin raps or using jigging spoons with a rattle as well.     On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well.  One day the jigging line catches most of the fish, the other day a deadstick is hot.     Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts have fish houses set up on various pieces of structure as well as adjacent to structure in deep mud.  A consistent mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees in the mix.     Shallow structure is best right away in the morning and as the sun starts going down in the late afternoon.  Mud is more of a slower bite but all day.   The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts (as of this past week) was open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.  Venmo is also available at all resorts.  Work through your resort for specifics.   Ice fishing is in full swing across Lake of the Woods and there are openings for lodging, fish house rentals, sleeper fish house rentals and meal plans across the area.  Ice fishing is extended on LOW with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st, walleye / sauger season open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes.

From your fingertips to God's ears...  Finally got some snow!   Several inches of new snow fell before and during the weekend.  Sunday eve when we left, the high winds had already begun to create some drifting on the lake.  It was fun riding for sure.  Lots of folks on the lake this past weekend too.  We fueled up the sleds at Shamrock and saw as many people fishing in that area as I've ever seen in the Winter on Lake Vermilion.     Our weekend results were decent.  Jeff and I and a buddy caught probably 50 walleyes between the three of us, mostly fishing a jig/plastics with our three biggest being 24", 25", and 25.5".  We also got one large pike of unknown length.  During the midday on Sunday, we targeted whitefish and Jeff managed one big one.  We released all of our fish, except for three small walleyes that our buddy wanted to bring home for a meal.  Definitely a fun weekend on Lake V!

The Vikings are the Vikings so it's nothing new.  It is kind of sad that Darnold's off season stock is now going to drop like a rock after these last two games. It kind of shows he's not a big game guy.  🤔

I'm blaming leech... his food selection has been lacking game days recently  🤣
