Hoping to get some info on this lake. Researching for a family ice fishing trip in January and taking advantage of some off season rates. If you have an input it would be appreciated. Ice condition, production history, typical catch, etc...

If you are talking Bass Lake north of Cohasset, here it goes.

The south end of the lake gets ALOT of ice fishing pressure for bluegills and the limit is 5 bluegills on the entire lake.

The north end would be a good bet for perch and northerns, although the northerns run small. You might also end up with a walleye or two.

There are a couple of resorts on the lake, but I think they're closed for the winter.

Lodging in Grand Rapids can be tough on weekends because of hockey games, but there is a nice hotel in Deer River too.

Brian, thanks for the info. Bass Lake north of Cohasset is the one.

That is some of the info I'm looking for. My friend says he has the trip booked, sounds like we'll be up mid-January. Hopefully the fishing is good, or at least productive for the kids.

Only other question is where is a good bait shop near-by? Someone with good knowledge of the lake, because we don't! Love it.

Fished this last year during late ice. I also fish it quite a bit in the summers. I agree with BMC, try the weed lines on the south bay and you'll get small perch and decent size gills. The pike have good length, but are pretty scrawny but feisty too.

Make sure if you are accessing the lake yourself that you use the public landings and either wheeler, snowmobile, or drive a truck a ways to get to decent fishing. There is a resident on the lake that has a road plowed and it goes right to the landing at his house. It looks like a public access, but He get's pretty riled up if you use his road and his landing even if it is just to turn around.

My uncle lives on Bass and has figured the eyes out pretty good. He can usually get close to a limit most nights. So they are worth chasing if you're interested. God's Country Gas and Bait is a great little shop. I've known the owners since I was in elementary school. They're great people and they'll help you out in any way possible. You should be able to find the gills, there's lots of em and a lot of good sized ones.

One last post... we'll be traveling up this weekend. Sounds like some nice cold temps. Just curious what depths folks have been fishing at and having luck. We'll be on the south end to start.

Hope for a good weekend. Will report after the trip.

Well, my group had a great weekend at Bass Lake. Compliments to Wildwoods Resort for an awesome stay. Beautiful cabins and well taken care of.

Fishing was fairly good. The weather was aweful so we weren't to mobile but that didn't deter our results. Fished in 18 FOW on the south end and had a mixed bag of bluegill, perch, northern, and bass.

Had one crappie mixed in too. Bite was very light. Lesson of the weekend was not to trust your bobber, just feel 'em out while jigging slowly. Small presentations and waxies worked best.

Also, compliments to the lovely DNR officer who checked us on Sunday. Hats off to the young lady for coming out on a really cold miserable day.

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Think the Free crawlers in the back yard are going to take a hit this summer! 🤭

Correction, rainbow minnows are at least 75 cents each, and leeches are $60 per pound. lol

Their coming! Was poking around southern center mn last Friday and found about 20 on a hill side, all to small to pick yet.  Spots on the GPS! 🤗

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow
