Lake of the Woods Fishing Reports by Wigwam Resort

Recommended Posts

Greetings Fishermen!

Just think...Last year at this time, it was 70 degrees and ice was fading fast! This year, we're still fishing out at the reefs!

Speaking of the reefs, that is where we are catching them right now! We are pulling out limits of sauger and walleye, and mix a few bonus jumbo perch in there! We're fishing between 28-32 feet of water off of rubble rock. We're having luck using Jiggin' Raps, Lindy Flyers, and JR Stop Signs, in various colors and glow colors.

If you are fishing in the mud, it will probably be spotty and and slow. BUT, if you can fish the first hour and a half, and the last hour and a half in 17-21' in front of the Gap, there is some excellent walleye fishing to be had! Use your Vexilar and find those fish!

We still have room to bring you up to the reefs! Give us a call to book your fishing vacation before we lose the ice!

Greetings Fishermen!

And the snow keeps falling...and falling. We are currently under a winter storm warning until this evening, and the snow doesn't look like it is letting up any time soon! In case you forgot, because the snow made you forget, SPRING starts tomorrow! Have you seen a robin?

The ice on Lake of the Woods doesn't seem to care that Spring starts tomorrow, as we still have 30"! We are still getting the best bite out on the reefs in 30-34 feet of water near Bridges Island. Gold Disco Balls, Macho Minnows, Chubby Darters, and Buckshots are doing really well. Gold, pink, and glow colors are the go to right now. Today we had 12 people out there and they caught 98 fish!

I have heard a few people have moved in as close as 5 miles off shore, instead of 16 miles out. The fishing has picked up a little bit, but it is still not fast and furious. Fishing deep 30-34, still seems to be the best bet.

We are still catching quite a number of tullibee, and a few eel pouts. Northerns can be caught anywhere, but going closer to shore in shallower water, 4-10 feet, seems to be working pretty well with tip ups.

We are already into the third week in March, and see no near foreseeable end to the ice fishing! Last year, we were already in our boats, catching monster walleye off the river, and even into Four Mile Bay! Enjoy this extended ice!!

Happy Fishing!!

Greetings Fishermen!

We still have ice! We still have a lot of ice, and a lot of snow. We have had some warm, melty days though! The 10 day forecast looks to be promising for some major melting as well! I have heard through the grapevine, that the Rainy is now open just 5 miles east of Birchdale.

The fishing report hasn't really changed much since last week. If you're fishing the mud, it's spotty, probably slow. If you're fishing up by the Bridge's reefs, you're probably doing pretty darn well. We still have houses out there, but we are planning on pulling all of our houses back to the resort on Sunday. From what I hear, we will be one of the very last resorts out there!

It's certainly the time of year for northern fishing and I've heard a few guests talking about some of the big ones they're pulling out of the ice. Shallow, 4-12 feet of water, live bait, and your legs warmed up to run to your tip up, and you should have yourself some nice pike!

It's amazing that our ice season has finally come to a close, and we want to thank each and every one of you that chose us to guide you through your Lake of the Woods fishing adventure! We hope that if you enjoyed us during the ice fishing season, you will come back and try us in the summer!

Check out our latest fishing video, which was shot right out in front of Wigwam on Four Mile Bay. We were fishing in about four and half feet of water, and we used live and dead bait, however, the live bait outfished the dead.

Greetings fishermen!

I saw a beautiful thing on my way into work today...a truck pulling a BOAT and not a fish house! We have had some warm weather, although, today the temperature is quite chilly, and below freezing. Tomorrow it is supposed to warm up again, and just get warmer and warmer from there.

Even though Wigwam pulled all of our houses off the lake, people are still heading up to Lake of the Woods to ice fishs. The warm weather we had this past weekend left the ice roads with something to be desired, though. Slush, deep melting snow, and big trucks pulling big fish houses made traveling a bit more difficult than it has been. A few guests came in after getting off the ice, and needed a stiff drink and some solid ground to unwind from the drive in.

There were some good fishing days, and some bad fishing days this past week. Some people did really well, and some people didn't do well at all. One group I talked with said they came in shallow, 17 FOW, at about 5 o'clock, and just slayed them. Caught their limit in about an hour and a half.

Now is the time to get out there and do some tip up fishing for northern pike. The weather is beautiful, the sun has been shining, and people have been hauling giant gators up and out of the ice! Stay shallow, between 4 and 10 FOW, and bring both live and dead bait, although live has seemed to do much better lately. Remember, bring your sunscreen! I saw more than a few raccoon eyes on fishermen this weekend!

There have been boats fishing the Rainy! Birchdale opened up just enough for some boats to be able to scoot their small boats over the shore ice and into the water! I've heard they are doing quite well out there too. One person I talked to had a 26", a 27" and a 29" walleye in the few hours that he was out there!

Remember our discounted spring rate is $28.50 per person, per night. Can't beat that!

Greetings Fishermen!

Boats, boats, and more boats! But don't forget the ice!

Birchdale now has both lanes open to big boats, Frontier is open to big boats, and they are pushing boats out over the shore ice at Vidas, which is quickly fading as well. Vidas should be open in the next few days.

As for the fishing, we are getting varied reports. Some boats are pulling in a ton of fish, while others are struggling. Orange, yellow, and gold jigs seem to be the ticket with live rainbows. The current is not super strong so you won't need a really heavy jig. A controlled drift through 15-18 feet of water should put you on some fish. There were a lot of good reports from down by ClementsonAccessOnRainyRiver.

Ice fishing. Yes! We are still ice fishing. The roads are getting sloppy with the strong spring sun, and slightly warmer temperatures. Heard a report of 30+ inches of ice with a foot and a half snow pack remaining. It is still iffy to go off trail without tracks, so beware of that before bringing your ATV. The walleye bite has seemingly picked up in the last week or so out on the ice. People are coming in shallow, 15-18 feet of water, and are pulling in a few fish. North of Pine Island, Lighthouse Gap, Morris Gap, and over near Long Point, have all been producing well. Morning and late afternoon bite are a bit stronger. The pike are biting in shallow, 4-10 feet, and live bait seems to be more effective than dead bait. The reports on the pike are varied, overall a bit slow, but people are still icing some big gators.

Wigwam Resort is open to you during this Rainy River open water/Lake of the Woods ice season, and offers hot food, cold drinks, and a great atmosphere! Swing in after your long day of fishing and warm up, and wind down!

Give us a call to book your fishing adventure!

Greetings Fishermen!

The river is on its way! Just yesterday it was open in front of Sportsman's Lodge! If the weather warms as it is supposed to, within the next few days it should be open all the way to Wheeler's Point!

At this time, no travel on Four Mile Bay is advised. Public boat accesses that are open at this time include: Birchdale, Frontier, Franz Jevne, Vidas, and Timbermill Park.

Even with the walleye season closed, people are still out catching fish! Sturgeon are abundant in the Rainy River right now, and people are catching these massive prehistoric beasts every day. It is still catch and release season on sturgeon, but on April 24th, the season will open for harvesting. Please make sure you read the latest sturgeon fishing regulations, which I am adding to the end of this post.

There is still ice! As I said earlier, no travel is advised on Four Mile Bay, but if you go further west, the ice is still quite accessible. People aren't needing to go out that far though, because they are bringing in some pretty monstrous pike right in shallow shoreline water. Live and dead bait are both working well.

Now it is a waiting game, to see what the next few weeks bring. Will we have much for open water when the season opens back up? What do you think?

Greetings Fishermen!

Here is the report from Captain Wiggles:

Fish in 14-22 feet of water near the Lighthouse and Morris Gaps, anchor up and jig with frozen shiners. Gold, pink, orange and chartreuse. And the colors you see in the video!

Thanks for tuning in!

Greetings Fishermen!

Hey look! The sun is out! Quick, before it rains again! We are having a beautiful day today, and after Saturday we are relishing in it! Wind, rain, waves...it was definitely not an ideal fishing day, but there were more than a few fisherfolks who braved the elements and went out to catch fish!

Even on the crappiest of days, the fish were biting just outside of Pine Island, in about 29 feet of water. Jigs tipped with frozen shiners was the ticket this weekend. I tried out a few live minnows, and didn't even get so much as a bite. Maybe, I did get a bite, but my hands were so numb from the cold and wet that I didn't feel it.

On Saturday, a few teams of hardcore fishing women took to the lake and the river for the 1st Annual Happy Hookers Fishing Tournament, (ladies only) through River Bend Resort. Here is a picture of our own Liz, and her fishing partner Tanya, getting ready to head out as the only unguided team. The fishing wasn't great, as they were limited to the river with the wave conditions, but they had fun!

We have plenty of openings this month for awesome fishing trips! We also have some great mid-week and summer specials! Check out our website for more information! And remember, kids 12 and under, fishing with us, stay FREE!

The fish are biting! The reefs were producing well in around 29 feet of water. Frozen shiners are still the ticket it seems. There are still people using brightly colored jigs that are having great luck, but a lot of fish were caught using bottom bouncers and spinners this weekend as well. Some of our launch boats ran all the way out to Garden Island this weekend with AWESOME results.

Wigwam has a great new band this coming weekend called the "Fishtone Rockers" and we are pumped to hear them play both Friday and Saturday nights!

Greetings Fishermen!

Yesterday I tagged along on a launch trip and we caught fish! We took quite a drive and headed up to Knight's and Bridge's Islands and fished in about 20-24 feet of water. We anchored up and were jigging with frozen shiners. We did try out crawlers and leeches, but frozen shiners were by far the go to bait. They were biting light, and if you weren't on top of your hook set you would not get them in the boat. Good colors were pink with gold sparkles (is that a manly fishing term?), black with gold sparkles, gold, chartreuse, orange, and even blue. Overall, it was a gorgeous day for fishing and we had a blast!

Greetings Fishermen!

Fishing has been pretty darn good! Head up to the west side of little oak, pull some spinners with leeches, minnows, or crawlers, in about 12-17' of water. The west and east sides of Garden Island have been producing nice sauger and walleye as well, again with spinners and leeches, crawlers, or minnows in 12-26' of water. The jig bite is on at the reefs of South Bridges and the 9 footer, in around 26' of water. Tip your jigs with frozen shiners, and anything with gold has been working great!

This past weekend we hosted the North Star Summer Walleye Classic fishing tournament, and 22 teams fished it. The folks who braved the wind and the waves and made it up to Garden and Knights did very well and brought in some really high quality fish!

Can you believe that it is almost Independence Day? Where has time gone?! And we are finally having some summertime weather! Break out your sunscreen!

Fishing has been really good this past week! Fishing near Long Point in around 27 feet of water, pulling spinners has been very productive. Fishing up on Bridges on the rocks in 26-30 feet of water, anchored and jigging was awesome yesterday. Spinners with purple and gold blades around and on the rocks in around 6-16 feet of water has also been effective. (Near Bridges also!) Trolling with #7 ShadRaps has been very productive. Overall, get your boat out there, and you are bound to catch some fish!

Mike and Tanya Hamberg got married this weekend, and celebrated their union here at the WIgwam Resort! Thank you guys for letting us be a part of your special day! Congratulations and best wishes on your life together! full-42980-34741-miketanyawedding.jpg

Greetings Fishermen!

We had a beautiful 4th of July weekend! Yes, it was hot, but guess what? We have a lake right out our front door to jump into! Today we get a bit of relief from the heat with a much needed rain shower! Grow gardens, grow!

Fishing has been pretty darn good over the past few days! Our guys headed up to Starrin Shoals to fish on the rubble yesterday. They pulled salmon colored spinners in about 30' of water, and did amazing. They also pulled bottom bouncers with crawlers. When I asked if they went anywhere else, they said, "we didn't have to". That says enough right there!

This weekend is our 22nd Annual Beach Bash party! We are so excited to host this event, and so excited to see you here! We still have room, so call us and book your room before they're gone! This year we are offering DD's! Locals can get a room for $20 per person, so they don't have drive! Remember, we also have a campground so break out your tents!

Greetings Fishermen!

We've had some incredibly warm days here on Lake of the Woods! Today, projected temperatures are supposed to hit in the 90's! We asked for summer, and by golly, we got it!

Fishing has slowed just a bit due to the fish fly hatch that we had recently, but people are still catching quite a few fish! Today the fields North of Zipple Bay in 7 feet of water were producing a lot of fish. Also the Twin Islands in the sand were giving up the fish. Leeches and crawlers on spinners seems to be the ticket, and blue and purple I've head have been the hot colors. Also, in a bit deeper water over the mud in front of Pine Island, around 30-32', has been doing pretty well.

Greetings Fishermen!

We've been a bit chilly up here! There was actually a FROST advisory for the area last night! What? It's July! But that is what we get for complaining that it was too hot. And before that, complaining that it was too cold.

The fish have been biting in the middle of the lake in 32-34' of water. Anchoring up and jigging has been productive. Downrigging has been doing well, and so has pulling 2.5 oz bottom bouncers in 34' of water. The rocks on the north end of the lake have been producing nice fish. On the south end, if you are looking for big fish, go to 30-32 feet along the line, and that is where folks have been finding them! Lots of slot fish are being caught!

Greetings fishermen!

Rain, cold, a little wind....it doesn't stop the awesome fishing!

Fishing has been hot on Traverse, Crow Duck, and the NW edge of Little Oak. Fish are starting to show up in the Zippel Bay area, in 24-38 feet of water, pulling spinners. There are a lot of big fish in the main basin, in 32-34', jiggin, pulling spinners, or down rigging.

Greetings Fishermen!

We've had rain, and sunshine this past week and weekend, but this week and especially this weekend, we are supposed to get back up to summertime temperatures! Not that we have been complaining about the respite from the heat!

The fish are starting to head south now, which means they are a bit closer to us, and we don't have to travel quite so far to find them! There are a couple pods of fish that we have been tailing: One is 12-14 miles NNW out of the Gap, and another is 4-6 miles east of Long Point and the Twin Islands. Both have people catching fish in 33-34', down rigging or drifting with spinners, 2-2.5 oz weights, depending on the wind speed. Hot colors for spinners right now are gold/red and gold/chartreuse, both available at Tom's Tackle.

Another pod of fish is 6-7 miles NNW out of the Morris/Lighthouse Gap in 29-32', down rigging or anchored up and jigging.

Locals are saying that the evening bite in the river has been picking up this last week, and that the numbers of smallies and northerns in the river has been picking up as well.

The heat is on! Not just the temperature, either!

Big fish are being caught like crazy. One of our launches boated 10 slot fish yesterday. One fisherman told me that he had only been jigging in the mud for 3 minutes and caught a 27" and a 29"! That is exciting fishing! The fish are moving into the 25-28' range. The spinner bite is still on. The west side of the 9 footer in the mud from 32-34' is on fire right now. People are picking up a few fish jigging later in the afternoon towards evening. The Zippel Bay corridor is starting to heat up!

Greetings Fishermen!

It feels like summer. It feels like summer on the equator. Do you like it this hot? Or do you prefer fall, or winter?

We're still bringing in the fish despite the massive amounts of sweat lost doing it! They are still catching fish out front by the 9 footer in around 35', with more big fish being caught in the mud! Spinners with crawlers seems to be the ticket these days! Fish have moved to the rocks, and folks have been catching them on the rocks jigging. North and south of Garden Island has been producing fish as well. North- 16-25' of water, and south- 30-35, pulling spinners with crawlers. Colors that have been effective are pink with gold, purple with pink, white, and red with silver. If you are looking to stay a little closer to home, they have been catching fish closer to the Zippel, out in front of the jetty, in around 30 feet.

Greetings Fishermen!

What was a beautiful day of fishing has quickly turned into a tornado warning for the area! The landings are full as anglers are trying quickly to get off of the lake.

Fishing is good. Seems to be the main basin bite is still good pulling lead core and crank baits. Fish are starting to go on anchored up and jigging with a minnow. Fish are still biting on the rocks on spinners. Look forward to the October bite in the river, call now to book your SPECIAL October rate of $450 for a full day of guided fishing! (This is for a full boat, which fishes 6 people. ) This is a savings of $270!! Hurry before all of our launches fill up!

Greetings Fishermen!

The temperature this morning is certainly bringing visions of augers cutting through the ice! Get ready folks, because here it comes!

Fishing has been slowly improving in the river. Find a spot anywhere from Four Mile Bay to the Airport and they are finding the fish. Further east towards Frontier saw a few fish being caught this weekend. In front of the Gap in 17-25 feet is still producing a lot of fish. Anchor up with a jig tipped with a frozen shiner is about all you need. Any color seems to be catching right now, with white being the hot choice.

We are going to be pulling our launch boats for the season this weekend. While we are sad to end our launch season, we are happy to be getting ready for the soon coming ice season! Fish houses, heaters, and bombers all need to be readied and prepped to go! We are looking forward to it!

Right now there is little to no ice. There was quite a bit in Four Mile Bay (not 3.5" as was rumored) but the warm weather we've had the past couple of days has really depleted that. We have a long ways to go yet!

As of today, we have upwards of 5 inches in the bays, and 5 inches in some spots on the lake. Yesterday, the lake ice was quite jagged and rough, but that seems to have smoothed out some today. We are making ice, but please remember that this early ice is unpredictable and is nowhere near safe to fish on. We know everyone is antsy to get out on the ice, but it is always better to be safe than sorry!

Stay tuned for an ice report video tomorrow!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
