hay lake/ wrenshall

anyone know anything about hay lake outside of wrenshall, i see its pretty shallow but the dnr survey claims it has fish, is this lake springfed or is there a flowage or something like that going through it?

has anyone ever fished this lake with any luck ....any info would be appreciated

It's my understanding that the new road built along the west side of the lake cut off it's source of water so it's been slowly drying up. I know people used to catch fish, including decent walleye, there but I'm not sure whats left anymore.

There's fish in Hay Lake, no gold mine, but crappies, northern, and walleye. The lake is called hay lake because it was actually cut for hay years ago. The water is low, but that's relative. The roads around the lake have not impacted water levels. The lake is a big bowl, weedy.

i have fished it some, it's super shallow and weedy, not spring fed afaik. i know it used to freeze out, or almost freeze out some winters. i thought they stopped stocking 'eyes because of this. this was one of those shallow lakes i knew of that if you hit it a few years after a freeze out, it would be sensational pannies until the population stabilized down...then it would be overrun with runts for quite a few years until the next die off.

i haven't fished it for 8(?)+ yrs tho. i remember LOTS of bullheads that time, fishing from a canoe.

Water level has come up to normal. Good lake to take some kids to. No roads plowed. Try off the point that goes in to the bay on the right.

Was out on Hay this morning. 4-5" of ice, 1 crappie, handful of small pike and perch. had to be on the move to catch fish.
