Fishing was fantastic, 26-27' was the best depth. We didn't do the usual shuffle of shallow-deep-shallow. Pretty windy...limited the moves, moved twice the 1st day, none the second. Actually had better results the second staying put. We probably caught at least 100 fish a day, kept our limit over two days, all walleyes were 14" or bigger, (caught a boat load of 12-13"ers) saugers were all 13" or bigger. Funny thing is the majority of our saugers were bigger than the walleyes, lots of 16-17" sauger with a 19" thrown in. Only 3 walleye over 19.5" (thrown back) 2-20"s and a 24". Some monsterous eel pout! One we guessed at 11-12#'s, lots in that 8-10 range. Probably a total of 25. Best time was 11:00-1:30 both days, non-stop during this time...came in spurts before and after this time. Very few the last hour of light each day. This is when we usually have our best luck. Lively fathead on bobber line w/ glo jig-a-bit out-produced the shiners on the same dead stick. Shiners broke in half on the jigging lines worked awsome...used spoons, raps, nils baby shad they all worked. Gold, glow or firetiger, didn't seem to matter.<P>Get up there now! They're really going!<P>Ken

Great report. Where did you drive onto the lake at? Will ATV's still work or is there too much snow?

Posted

Labs: Great report. Sounds like you had one "H" of a good time. Be there 12/28 and hoping for the same. Good luck and hang on. Bill

Went off "Adrians" even though it's not a road quite yet. You'll still do fine with ATV's, we got 3" or so on Monday but alot of it blew off. Snowmobiles will work also. I think all but the heaviest trucks are safe if you stay on the "road". I wouldn't venture all over like some of the guys I watched, not only were these guys driving all over the ice, they were going no less than 30 MPH. Too fast on the thinner ice. Have a great time up there!<P>Good Luck! Rip some Lips!<P>Ken

Thanks for the report Labs. I can hardly wait smile.gif.

Labs, We must have been within a few feet of each other at the landing Mon.& Tues. messing with ATVs and trailers. Maybe we'll meet someday at Red Lake, we grow bedding plants and perennials so we may have some friends in common other than Kelly P. I was there shortly after you two made contact on the ice a couple years ago. Stan C. smile.gif

Stan...You know how many times I've looked around and thought..."I wonder if any of these guys are regular forum users?". It'd be great to meet up sometime...I spend a lot of time between Red and LOW. I met Jigglestick 4 years ago by accident on the ice, we found out who each other were, and have been good friends since. Always looking to make another! grin.gif Post when you'll be at either and we'll see if we can't hook up....<P>Good luck! Rip some Lips!<P>Ken

Hey guys, I want to hit 16 this weekend, do you have any gps coordinates to make it easier for me? Any numbers would help. thanks

Posted

Pimp,<BR>I don't have coordinates but if you get a hot spots map you can get the info off of there. Must head to reefs, must head to reefs. It seems if you head off of Arnesens or Bablers and head NNW you will see a few houses on 12 mile and just keep going out to 16. Hard to see in the early am though. Please let us know the report!! Trust the compass.

I figured I would just look out and see what I could see on Saturday morning, but thought gps coords would be nice to have. Once I get back, I will post how I did and maybe even give out the gps coord for 12 and 16.<P>Remember, "production" is the name of the game.

Do a search for GPS on here, I know 16 is out there somewhere.<P>I know for sure I'll be on 16 this Saturday.<P>Here's one.<BR><A HREF="http://fishingminnesota.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000098.html" TARGET=_blank>http://fishingminnesota.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000098.html</A><p>[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 12-18-2003).]

I'll be at Adrians Dec. 26,27,28 for three nights, fishing 2 days in their houses. It's a 20 year tradition and always a good time. Last Mon. & Tues we moved from deeper water to 14' about 3 PM and did good, no lunkers but really nice fish. Did anyone else see the dog that was chasing wheelers on Tues.? Hey guys, We fished out of Gibbins from the 14th through the 16th. We were in one of their sleeper houses. The fishing was fantastic. Limits of saugers for 3 people and threw many fish back. The walleyes were running smaller than the saugers where we were at. Lots of fish in the 10-12 inch range that we turned back. Both walleyes and saugers. The limits we kept were in the 14-18 inch range. All saugers. It was an awesome time. Bryant is a very good host and I will tell you one thing we definetly will be making a return trip.

Widetrack, appreciate the link. Keep your eyes out for a guy driving a maroon Polaris Sport Touring 550 pulling a blue fishtrap. I will be the guy wearing the orange stocking cap pulling in the walleyes.<P>Remember, "production" is the name of the game

Those are awesome houses hey walleyes?<P>Glad to hear you did well. <P>I tried to get in there next weekend but he's all filled up frown.gif. Oh well, I'll just have to wing it grin.gif.

Hey Labs,<P>I'll be on the radio ch 7/11. How about shooting me an email when it gets closer to the time and you know where you'll be. <P>Are you going to have your boy with? How is he doing? I am going to have my 9 year old son Jake along.<P>Later<P>[email protected]

Bob...I'll let you know the game plan once it's in place. (and get the kitchen pass!) grin.gif Zach is doing AWESOME!!! Best he's done in his 9 years. He needs to get a transfusion every 3 weeks to supplement some immunoglobbins, but it has brought his seizures down from 150/day to 10/week avg. smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif He won't be fishing with me, he'll probably make it up to RED for his anniversary of getting better. He's only at a 10-11 month old level mentally (about 2 months higher than his ol' man!) so he can't comprehend the ice fishing thing. I'll keep in touch....my e-mail [email protected]<P>Good Luck! Rip some Lips!<P>Ken

Labs, I'll be in an Adrians fish house and staying in Cabin#7. My cel# is 612-616-2342, if we don't make connections I'll see you on Red Lake. We go there a lot too. Stan C. smile.gif

I hope to be fishing….  It’s so rare that I get to go, I hate passing up the opportunity. 😉

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff!  Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
