Some of you seem like your scared of your own shadow.. lets get out there and fish!!!!!!!!! I am sure all the resorts love to have 10,000 calls a day and all you say is " ARE DARE ANY TRUCKS DRIVING OUT YET'' hOWS fishing ? get out there and find out 12 inches of ice is plenty unless your driving a D-17 alice pulling a **** spredder plump full if coal very good

last one out buys

I'm with Gordy. What happened to a sense of adventure. A foot of ice is plenty. I used to race snowmobiles and we would park 100 pickups and semi's right next too each on 12 inches of ice (until the Detroit Lakes) incident. But, that was a fluke. To hell with it. I may hook some other stuff on the back of the trailer just to add more weight. I may even pick up a few fat chicks on the way up to the lake, not to mess with (I am married), just to risk it a little more.

Here is your answer. Yes there were full size trucks out past Pine on Saturday and Sunday. The ice was less the farther out you went. (no more than 12 inches out in 24 feet of water)I did not veture all over out there and test drill so who knows you could find 6inches somewhere! If you are going to venture out good luck and please don't bring anyone with you who doesn't know what they are getting into like young children. Some drove over Pine with utility trailer and parked there then went out into the big water with wheelers. It is your decision from here. Good luck. I'm chicken so I'm going to wait for more ice.

A sense of adventure is one thing, dieing is another. You're sending the wrong message. Have you ever fallen through the ice and went completely under? Ever came up in a different spot than you went down? It's not fun.

Being clueless, read that fifteen hours away by car, I rely on the boards and calls to the resort I am staying at for good information on ice thickness. Ice thickness ranks right up near the top on my list of important things to know before I travel a day and a half and drop a grand on a fishing trip. As for being adventurous, I'm gonna leave that up to you all. This particular season seems frustrating with all the different ice reports. Hope you see my point.

gordy
i suppose you are one of those guys who will drive all over the lake as fast as you can, and set up shop right next to someone else when there is a whole lake to fish on

I dont mean to sound unsafe be3cause i dont want myself or anyone else to go down wouldnt be fun but i think this site sends people into a tizzy. If you dont feel safe dont go out with a truck. even stop every 300 yds and drill a hole Lets get down to basics, At 5 pm i will be with Big Gaffer and our 2 fatchicks sucking down a cold one at the riverbend!!!!! good luck boys
Ps if you see my truck going down either throw me a line or say a quick prayer at least i will die somewhere I love LAKE OF THE WOODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

LEAD ON OH BRAVE ONES!!! Just let me know any pertinent information that will help me recognise you brave ones (vehicle descriptions, beer brands, homemade tatoos...) so I don't waste my fishing time trying to rescue you trailblazers. I've dropped the front end on an old landcruiser through a weak spot on 18" ice and I've dropped to my sholders through weak ice. Those experiences and the fact that I stood on 4" and 13" ice (about a 1/4 mile apart)less than a week ago on LOW prompt me to encourage ice fisherpeople to excercise caution and get information rather than just blaze an unknown trail with a vehicle.

i DO AGREE WITH BOB C. ICE DOES FREEZE DIFFERENTLY WHY I DO NOT KNOW BUT I AM NOT SAYING TO GO NUTS AND START BLAZING A NEW TRAIL STAY ON WHAT YOU KNOW IS GOOD ICE THATS WHAT I WILL BE DOING I AM NOT GOING TO BE BLAZING ANY NEW TRAIL MAYBE ON SLED NOT IN MY TRUCK

EASY NOW EVERYONE I AM NOT SLAMMING THE WHOLE LOT OF FISHERMAN

JOEY SHOT FOUR
DONT GET WORKED UP BOYS JUST TAKE A NITRO AND SETTLE DOWN

I appreciate this site with all the updates. If people are going to drive that is their choice but from what I have seen up there this year it would not be the wisest decision. When people dump their trucks in the drink it can be because of a fluke in the ice or not waiting until it is safer. I will be riding my ATV Friday when I am out there. When Babler says it is ok I will be driving. The last thing I want to do is leave my 2 young kids without a dad and my wife to collect that big life insurance policy! The adventure seems more fun I think driving a sled or ATV out there then driving a truck. The only reason I drive a truck later is that it is easier and not as cold. Also, I would rather dump my ATV in the drink then my truck!

I see GORDY touched a sore spot. I know this cougan he is out to have a good time (some call him GOOD TIME CHARLIE) he is not telling you folks to go out on thin ice. Hey I walk on thin ice often at home with my wife and I haven't fell through yet. We just want a real report like the one from the guy that just left the ice. Thanks
who are you chick johnson???

I just don't like the shrinkage, that's the worst.

It looks like we stirred the pot a little bit heh Gordy. Everybody gets uptight but from what I here there are people driving out up there. I haven't heard a resort endorse it yet but they really have to cover their tail. 99.9% of the time 14 inches of ice is going to be safe. But, like Bob said, if it vary's down to 4 or 6 inches, thats kind of thin for a vehicle or even for the fat chicks. Oh well.

If you die today, you don't fish tomorrow shocked.gif.

I'm making a list, I'm checking it twice. I'm gonna find out how thick is the ice. Lunker Claus is coming to town.

more important than the reports of ice thickness is the fact it's oNly the middle of Dec. for crisp sakes, don't get excited. First ice has got a lot of publicity lately but it aint all it's 'cracked' up to be I think. The best fishen is yet to come ! If you travel this time of year on ice it's going to be hairy, best keep your wits about you and go slow. A old friend went through last year with his snowmobile in the middle of the winter on the crack at Babblers and like a previous post, I too have put the front end down and another time went in up to my armpits, not fun!

Fisherman of all people are hard to trust when it comes to fishing information, whether it's on this forum, at the bar, or on the lake. Some people might want others to think the ice is unsafe so they won't come there to fish. If you really want to know what the ice conditions are, get the @@@@ out on the ice and chop or drill yourself a hole. The same goes for where to fish and what to fish with. If you're relying on tips to make your decisions, you're going to miss out big time. Whatever someone reported as the hottest thing going yesterday or this morning might be the worst thing 1 hour later! GET OUT THERE AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF.

dont take much to get the boys all worked up everyone must have the fever the walleye fever that is.
fish on get the net

We returned from LOW today and fished Mon. & Tues. out of Adrian's. They hadn't opened their road as of this morning and advised not to drive out. Some were driving anyway even one full-sized Suburban. We used wheelers because the ice in the bay is less safe than on the lake, barely 10" in places, so why take the chance? The ice on the lake was 10" to 14" out to 28' of water Fishing was super! Stan C. smile.gif

thanks stan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how thick will the ice be on the 18th of January??????LOL

I like you name "Bareback" thats the only way to go. The ice will be thick enough to fish on any ?s ask Gordy

Just a note on behalf of those of us who rely on these sites and phone calls. It's not that we are too lazy to go drill a hole ourselves, it's that we might have to spend 14 hours of driving to do it. Not everyone lives a hop skip and a jump from the lake.
So to those of you who are local, or recent visitors to the lake and do post good helpful information on the site, I thank you, rest assured it is genuinely appreciated.

hey i love this sight to but you have to kind of do your own thing when you get on the lake and do what works for you

dont mean to P O anyone

land shark

Gordy
appreciate your posting
it does get a little frusturating when you come to this forum to get reports on how the fishing is and all you get is the same ?'s over and over about the ice thickness
they will still be asking in mid February
the only good night to come and read this forum these days is sunday night when everyone got back from their weekend
and their is still probably only 3 really good reports to read out of them all
and than of course the 100 ?'s about how thick is the ice]
if you are that worried about the ice just dont go!
lets get back to fishing
ps
i would still like my ? answered about if anyone has fished 16 mile yet or if they can get out there by snowmobile
over and out
Are you kidding me?

Kind of funny how you ask how the ice is and then in the next breath you say to do your own thing on the lake. I don't think ice thickness is anything to joke about when not so long ago there were a few people who lost their lives up there. Don't park your truck next to my snowcat and hug your family before you leave.

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
