Johnny O,

Either of the locations you mention are good places to start. If you see fish on the depth finder dont be afraid to anchor up and jig em, give it 45 minutes or so before you give up on the spot.

Good luck

Was up there a couple weeks ago and caught fish jigging in the same place everyone was downrigging. Some boats were also drifting with spinners and catching fish. Going to head back up in a week or so.

Fall holds some of the best fishing on Lake of the Woods! Great numbers of all fish are being caught. Trolling crankbaits still productive in 24-26 or 32-34 feet over mud north of Zippel Bay to Pine Island. Shallow evening bite in 11-12' in front of Pine Island. Jigging in 26-29 feet in front of Pine Island, Morris Point, or Graceton Beach. Spinners / crawlers still pulling walleyes as well. Trophy walleyes being caught daily, mainly deep water.

On the Rainy River, sturgeon still very active. Don't forget the last day for keep season is September 30! Walleyes in deeper holes and near edges. Some shiners starting to show up. Smallmouth pattern consistent, boulder or rock areas with current. Cranks and spinners for fantastic bass fishing.

Up at the NW Angle, walleyes hot near Little Oak, the US side of Falcon Island and near Crow Duck in 20-30 feet of water. Try hammered gold or pink blades with either a crawler or minnow. Jig/minnow anywhere from 10-20 feet around structure. Muskies on fire this past week. Muskies and pike biting on shallow cranks and bucktails. Smallmouth bass around reed beds and biting on spinnerbaits. Good luck to the MTT anglers this week. For more info, www.fishingminnesota.com.

Pulling lead core and crank baits in the main basin is the method of choice this week as walleye start to move in for fall.Try 25-27 or 30-35 feet of water off Zippel Bay, Stoney, and Long Point over shallow rock. Jigging with a minnow has been picking up near Lighthouse Gap and Pine Island. 27-30 feet with a minnow and 3/8 oz gold jig is preferred. Try 6-12 feet for the evening bite!

Sturgeon are still biting in the Rainy River! Keep season ends September 30th so don't miss out! Use a 5 or 6 circle hook with a glob of worms on the edges of deep holes.

Up on the NW Angle, jigging with pink, gold, or orange with a minnow is the way to go. Fish on 23-27 feet near Skeet, Oak, and Crowduck Islands. Perch and crappie biting in 35-45 feet using a jig and minnow. Smallmouth bass have been active in 15-25 feet near rock points. Muskie bite still good using shallow crank baits and Danny baits near Oak Island.

The water temperature is down to the low 40's this week, which kicks off the second shiner run. On the Rainy River there is lots of trophy and eater walleye action from the Gap to Birchdale. Try a 1/2 oz jig in 13 feet of water by Wabanica Church, the Baudette Airport, Hattie's Hole, Clemenston Bay and around Frontier Access. Anchor and jig with a minnow or frozen shiner using bright colors like pink, gold, and chartreuse. Lots of smallmouth bass and sturgeon action reported in deeper pockets.

Still plenty of action on the lake this week. Mornings have been great for walleye in 17-23 or 25-28 feet in Lighthouse Gap, 4 Mile Bay, Zippel Bay, Long Point, and a few reports up at Knight Island. Anchor and jig slowly with 3/4 oz jigs tipped with live minnows. Fish are biting light this week and there are trophy walleye suspended a foot and a half up to 4 feet off bottom.

Up at the NW Angle, good fishing continues into the Fall. In between the diver ducks, anglers are catching good numbers of walleyes. South of Oak Island and near Falcon Island are all producing, primarily jig and minnow. Muskies are coming trolling larger baits adjacent to rock points. The bay ice is here to stay! Boat fishing has almost come to halt for the year as most the bays and accesses are being iced in. Zippel Bay and Bostic Bay have 3.5 inches and the ice continues to form in four mile bay to the Gap. It won't be long, perhaps that next cold snap. Ice fishing often begins around Dec. 6th, give or take based on weather. Work through resorts and stay on their marked trails for safety.

The Rainy River is still open. Try the airport, Baudette Bay, ClementsonAccessOnRainyRiver and to the Vidas landing. Limits are being caught in 17-21 feet of water anchoring and jigging with a minnow.

Up at the NW Angle, the inlet has frozen over to about 3-4 inches. Still no ice on Young's Bay, but boat fishing is basically over for the season. Get ready for the ice fishing season with daily reports on the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook site. www.facebook.com/fishingminnesota. Freeze baby, freeze!

We have ice on the lake! Ice fishing is just within our reach as ice continues to build. 4 Mile Bay has 4-5 inches and there is 5 inches on the lake walking straight out from Pine Island. Water clarity in shallow water looked good. Morris Point has 6-7" on bay and 4-5" on lake. Zippel Bay has 5-7 inches with 3-4 inches on the lake out about a half mile to 15 feet. Arnesen's Rocky Point has frozen over, but there is still a bit of visible water on the lake. Some resorts hoping to have snowmobile and ATV trails out on the ice within the next week shallow fishing. Important...Remember to utilize resorts and marked trails on the ice. Do not venture off of trails. Use proper safety gear. Safety first.

The Rainy River is frozen and holding snow, but with a strong current is still spotty in most spots. Water is still visible on some parts of the river. ClementsonAccessOnRainyRiver Bay has 2-3 inches of ice.

Up on the NW Angle, the inlet now hold 4-5 inches of ice. The lake holds ice as far as the eye can see. For the latest ice updates, follow Lake of the Woods Tourism on Facebook at www.facebook.com/fishingminnesota. For lodging info, www.fishingminnesota.com/lodging.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
