Recommended Posts

This thread is for people to post pictures for the 2012 HSO Photo Contest. I posted rules and info in another thread, which you can see in the link below.

Rules and Regs for 2012 HSO Photo Contest

Prizes are just in the process of being finalized and I'll post them before long so people know what they're competing for.

So, as soon as you have some pics to put up, please do so! Just as a reminder, you can submit three pics per person per category. The two categories are: 1) Hero shot, and 2) Non-hero shot. If you submit more than three pics, your first three pics will be considered.

Get those cameras out and use them! The ND season starts today at noon, so hopefully we can get some pics put up before long. I imagine it'll take a little while for this thread to get added to, but I think it'll happen eventually and snowball towards the middle-end of the season. Most importantly- if you don't have your camera with you and ready to use, you won't get pictures to contribute to the contest! So bring them with and make use of them!!!

Looks like I get to start things off. Here are a couple of hero shots from the mule deer I took last tuesday in the badlands of North Dakota. He was shot at 28 yards. It was my first time there and a lot of fun was had. I absolutely love the DIY hunts and camping in the back country.

Good luck to everyone with the Minnesota opener only a couple days away!

dukhnt-

Nice buck and nice photos! I've always wanted to bow hunt out there. Can you share the story of how you shot that buck, for those of us dreamers? Where you in a tree or spot and stalk?

Yes, please share the story! However, please do so in a separate thread- we'll try to keep this one reserved for pics and comments on pics. Thanks!

He is getting mounted in velvet. But I am getting a european mount done, not a full shoulder mount. Sometimes you have to compromise with the other half.

I will try to get a story up in the near future. I have lots of pics from the trip. Gotta get caught up at home first. Last week was the hunt and the week before that was a family trip to the Black Hills. So I got behind on a few things. But it was soooo worth it. Scoot-I will start a new thread for the hunting story.

I arrowed this cow in Idaho last Wednesday evening, new hunting area to us since our usual area is in a huge wildfire. 20 yards! Is there a category for self-timer camera shot on steep slopes? smile

whats a hero pic?

From the rules and regs link at the beginning of the thread...

Each entrant can submit three photos in each of the two categories. Category 1 will be the “Hero Shot” category- this is just as it sounds. Pictures in this category will be of a hunter and an animal he’s successfully taken with is bow and arrow. This can be a “classic hero shot” or something different, but pics of hunters and their harvested game animals will go in this category. Category 2 will be “Non-Hero Shot” and these pictures will include everything that’s not included in the Hero Shot category. Importantly, these pictures must be taken while in the process of archery hunting. They can be anything from sunsets, live deer, live bears, flowers, an old oak tree, a blood trail, etc. You get the idea…

FYI- I'm still trying to get the prizes for this together. I apologize for the delay- I've been pretty swamped at work and home since I got back from my MT trip. Just a teaser in hopes of getting more picture entries- some of the prizes offered up so far are a plaque mount of a deer rack, a fishing trip for a dad and son on LOW (or any adult and a kid), a custom map, hunting knives, a new trail camera, and others that I'm forgetting right now.

So... get those pics taken and posted if you want a chance to win!!! I'm going out tonight and hope to take a few pictures that I can post. I'm not eligible to win in this contest (I'd just rig it so I got a cool prize anyway! laugh ), but I can post a couple pics for fun.

I took some great photos of a friend of mine who returned from Kansas with a dandy buck, but it wasn't an Archery deer..... this contest is archery only right?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
