Goofy way point names?

Recommended Posts

What goofy way point names have you used on your GPS to mark lake spots? One of mine is "Else" It's a spot that someone had marked with a jug a few years ago that I have caught a few Walleyes at so I marked it Else. For someone elses spot! grin Another is "Trifacta" since I caught a Walleye, Bass and Northen all in the same spot! Goofy! wink What do you got?

"nonslot spot"...couldn't catch anything but fish in the protected slot, moved a few miles, all I could find were eaters outside of the protected slot, hence "nonslot spot"

Minnesota River spots are interesting. Names come from some river rats or history, both new history and old history.

Otherwise, pretty generic. My waypoints incorporate the species, the type of structure, and the name of the lake. Plus with contours I can usually go back and find spots without a waypoint, which clutters my screen (I know I could turn the icons off).

I have one named "drunky" that marks a spot I was fishing when this pontoon full of incredibly intoxicated young guys attempted to dock said pontoon for a good 20 minutes.

mine are very similar to deer stand names, they just happen. I also have a lot of numbers that just popped up. If anyone looks at my gps they have no clue what anything means. Usually I'm marking in a rush so I don't take the time to put a name in. One of my favorite spots on our lake is a hump between 9 and 6. The spot between 7-8 doesn't produce as well.

SXXXXX For Structure

SdXXXXX for Sand

RXXXXX for Rock

MXXXXX for Mud

BXXXXX for Spawning beds

FXXXXX for fish

TXXXXX for Transition

Guess my names are pretty boring...But the pictures explain all the detail i need, Sd,R,M,B,F,T are just easy ways to find types of structure. Got different icons for the above as well.

Some years back my wife who rarely fishes caught a very large Jackfish near Elm point on the LOTW, I hit a waypoint and later that day named it "wifes hole", she did'nt see the humor in that for some reason !

Shes just not up on fishing lingo. Like Gap,hump, deep, drop, crevice!

Ask her if it would have been better to name it "Wifes Flat"? wink

I got a lot of unique names for waypoints. One day my dad and I found a spot to try and the fish were going like crazy and the Kenny C. song Shift Work was playing so we named it Shift 3-11. If I find a new spot close to one I fish often I will use N,S,E & W then the name of the other waypoint.

The pups and I put on 10.5 miles today and flushed 3 hens, 2 grouse and I killed a pine tree, 1 rooster flushed wildly 100 yards to left of us. It sure was fun to get out and seeing some birds. We did jump a good number of deer.

A couple of Facebook posters on Lake Vermilion Cabin Owners group said that there was still open water in Big Bay Friday Morning.  I am guessing that they may be talking about Oak Narrows.  I'm staying with my original freeze-over date of Thursday, December 1.   Somebody I know who went out fishing from McKinley Park Saturday said that Big Bay was frozen over.  He also said he walked all around the bay and found thicknesses of 1" to 5" of ice, so it is still very questionable.  It should be safe for walking by the middle of next week.   This site will have ice reports for the next week or so.  I will be up the middle of next week and should report on the ice by Thursday night.  The moderator has merged this topic with the Lake Vermilion Fishing Reports topic so I will switch to posting there when I have fishing reports.  Good luck fishing, but be very careful of varying ice conditions.

Hi there, I am making sure that this is the location that folks will be posting updates for Ice Fishing on Lake Vermilion this winter (2022).  I think so but want to make sure as I plan on trying to get out next weekend, December 8-11.

thanks wanderer.......even reports from lakes like leech gives me a pretty good idea of what the lakes i want to fish will be like. lot of past experience helps, and no doubt wheelers will be used soon.    we had a retiree.holiday union party last night. buddy said that his kid was on little Winnie with about 5 inches of ice and there moving all around the lake!!

Leech lake has been 100% capped for about a week, I think.  Before you say that’s not a small, underfished lake, it’s just an example that you could prolly drive wheelers on your kind of lakes by now. 😉   I’ve been seeing a lot of 5-7 inch reports going into the weekend.  Sadly I haven’t cut a hole yet.  Still working on repairs and updates on our houses.

Oh I didn't say I don't own several versions of Teslas, just that until this hell frozen over state changes I'll always find a use for the ice diggin' anchor. Will be a great post hole digger in it's next life use too
