Buying a used outboard worse than death?

I have a 17'6" tri-hull with a solid dependable Johnson 60 on it. Problem is after she planes (20mph) there aint nothin left. It tops out at just under 30. I'd like to move up to a 90 or 115 but NO WAY can I afford a new one. So I need advice on finding a used one. Whatta ya think? I've been told fat chance on finding anything decent.

You might be better off getting a whole new rig altogether...if you switched to an aluminum boat, you wouldn't need all that power. Maybe throw the 60 johnson on something else?

I can truely appreciate your situation. There are a lot of motors in the 90-110 range out there. The easiest to find are in the 84-89 vintage, somewhere around 3000. I have seen a couple the past six months, just a few years old and great shape for around 4500, seemed like good deals.Sooo,,,
1-get an older (85') model for just over 3k, and sell your motor outright, would not cost that much then. make sure that the place will let you have the motor checked before paying.
2-Bite the bullet and sell your rig and get something more suitable to your needs.
An upgrade is always a good thing!

Check out a place called PMC they sell rebuilt outboards and offer a full warranty on them. they are sometimes as much as 50% less than a new O/B. I have used quite a number of their rebuilt powerheads and they have been super reliable. grin.gif

First, what do you what to get to? My 17' Nortwoods with a 120 hp Force will top out at 35, but I cruise at 30. This is the true gps speed. Are you sure that you are really going 30, or do you just want to go faster? I derated the speed of my rig by going to a 15 pitch prop instead of a 19, but it's more than a fair trade because of much b etter hole shot. A new stainless prop might help, but with just a 60 you wouldn't get more than 1 or 2 mph better. But if the complaint really is hole shot, that might help some. But if you are still dissatisfied, I think the best advice is to bite the bullet and trade rigs. If you can't afford used, than sell used and buy used. There's lots of good used rigs out there that'll smoke ythe old heavy tri hull and are all ready to go.

EBAY. I found a 50 horse 4 stroke new in the box for $2,400 shipping is a couple hundred more but there are good deals on good motors. serch ebaymotors.com

Don't really want to get rid of the boat. She's stable and comfy. I guess I'll just keep my eyes out. Thanks for the input.

How many horsepower is your baot rated for?

Jumping from a 60hp to a 90 or 115hp sounds like too big a jump. I think that you maybe grossly under powered now or that you will be way over your boats rating if you up grade. And that will lead to safety & legal prolems.

Yea I thought so. Your way under powered. Probably trolls great though. That 115 Johnson would cure all your problems. Or at least this one anyway!

I was told once to always be within 20% of what your boat is rated for or it will be under powered... seems like a good theory...

There are some dealers up on the canada boarder that deal lease returns from the resorts up there. Might save you big money. I have heard from a few people that they where reliable and come with factory warrenty. So I baught one. Mail order motors. Next best thing to sliced bread. Picked it up at the freight depot in roseville. It came in great packing. She is on the boat right now and has been in the water once also. Works great.
Here is a shot at the dealer. Pine Wood sports. They have all the motors listed online. Other wise go to the manufactors web sites and do a dealer search for canada. A little research should find you one of the others that do lease returns.
I am happy with mine so far.

Got mine from Tompkins Hardware in Emo Ontario.Sounds like an odd business but they are much more than a hardware store. Very nice folks to deal with. They are right across from I. Falls.Ask for Tom Mosbeck

Gadgetman. Sounds like you must of been happy with them. I talked to that dealer also but they didnt have what I wanted at the time. Did you get yours shipped or go pick it up? I always wondered how the resorts where able to get new equipment every year.

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
