4-Stroke Outboards

Guest

Question

I am considering buying a Nissan 4-Stroke outboard motor. Does anyone have any experience with these motors? I like the idea of the 4-Stroke so I don't have to hassel with mixing fuel and I would like to use it to troll. Any comments or suggestions?

I see Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha's out number Nissan on the water by about 50:1 I don't own one yet, but judging by the numbers, the other three are doing something right. I have fished/ridden with all three and they are all great. Suzuki has the best warranty last I heard. 6 years. Good luck.

What size are you looking at? The small single cylinder ones don't idle down very well and have lots of vibration. The bigger ones are ok, but I would opt for a efi version by Mercury, Suzuki, or BMCA.

I've also owned a 4 stroke Merc. 9.9 that I used as a kicker on my last boat. I can say that was very quiet and smooth. I'd recommend that engine to anyone.

We too have a mercury 4 stroke 9.9 and it runs really quiet and smooth. We havent had any problems with it except for something in the carburetor sticks sometimes causing the motor to die once you give it any gas. It is a pretty heavy motor too if you are gonna take it on and off the boat alot.

I used a smaller 4 stroke when they were still fairly new as a loaner that was 5 HP. It was very noisy as compared to the larger 4 strokes. I wasn't at all impressed. I'd go to a dealer and see if you can listen to them run before you decide on a small 4 stroke.

I can't even remember what brand it was as we only had it on loan for a week trip in candada. It was a japanese brand that at that time built some smaller 4 strokes for Merc.

My friend has a Nissan, 2 stroke. It's not a four stroke, but overall the quality of the motors I've seen is poor, IMHO.

I would recommend spending a few hundred extra bucks and buy something better. You have to consider parts and service, I wouldn't recommend going the cheap route because it will cost you in the end.

I know my Honda 15 is indestructible. It sees a lot of abuse during duck season in the marshes, and it's a kicker on my bigger boat in the summer.

Have you looked for used 4 strokes? They do exist, just look for them. Heck of a lot cheaper.

I've had two 4-stroke Evinrudes a 15 and 9.9 and fished with Hondas in Canada, very quiet running and idling, in colder weather or when the motor hasn't run for a while you'll be amazed how much harder it is to start. I've found you've got to give it a lot of gas and choke it for a really long time (3-4 minutes) once you get it to fire while warming it up. Both motors, actually any 4 stroke I've used. Other than starting, they are great, also a lot heavier although in a 6 no big deal(you don't get that really nice smell and rainbow of oil in the water I love, though!)

I have a Suzuki 4-stroke and have never had to choke the engine. Even after sitting all Winter and fishing right after ice out. Maybe this is why Suzuki brags about Digital Fuel injection. If it doesn't start in 3 seconds or so something is wrong. I can't imagine cranking for a few minutes as an earlier post mentioned.

FYI,
The small outboards (suzuki included) that you are considering do not have fuel injection (in general those less than 40hp).
Follow proper warmup procedure and you should have no problems with "cold-bloodedness" syndrome.

No such thing as cold bloodedness with the Honda. Most mornings are cold, sometimes below zero while duck hunting, 2 or 3 pulls and we are gone. Never a problem.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
