Otter Shacks?

Guest

Question

Two questions here?
Of all the shacks that I have browsed this year I am still sold on the Otter II Magnum @ 80lbs. Anyone have anything to tell me about why I shouldn't go with this model.

Heading up to Reeds today to see what they have left so who is the one to talk to about cutting me a great cash deal?

Did you try Capras down in Blaine? I was in there a couple weeks ago and thought that I remember seeing a few left. Don't know if it the specific one you are looking for but it can't hurt to call. From your profile I see that you are in Aitkin, kind of a drive but if you can save 100 bucks, and only spend 20 in gas it would make sense. Hope this helps.

Chiro,
Check out Canvas Craft in Anoka also, if they have any left you may be able to get a good deal, or at least a free cover.

Little Jim's Bait in Annandale had some. I bought one this year and love it. Would recommend getting the cover bench for it.

Chiro, food for thought. I almost bought an otter but at the last moment decided on a trap voyager and really like it. I hae two kids that like to fish with me and they wouldnt fit in an Otter with me, but all three of us do fit in the Voyager. About the same price too.

I fish, therefore I am.

Reeds web page still shows that they have them for sale. So unless they don't update their web page you should still be able to get one. The magnum is awesome just got one a couple months ago and it is so nice. Another idea here at the end of the season look for a used one. That is what I got saved almost 250 with everything I got over the price of a new one and it condition isn't to bad a couple small holes easily patched.

I bought a fishtrap voyager in january and took it up to lake of the woods on 1 trip .
The velcro tabs that hold the poles in place tore off of the canvas.
Also the sled itself is much thinner plastic so if you intend to tow this sled any distance it will wear out quickly.
I bought it at cabelas and traded it in for a otter II magnum .( cabelas is very good if you buy something from them and are not satisfied )
The otter II is actually a bit bigger and a much better built house! I bought their bench seat (from otter website) and its really comfortable with this setup! (a little spendy though ,but worth it!)

fishrmn, sounds like you got a lemon, did the stitches just unravel or did it actually tear? Have used a friends voyager for 2 seasons now and havent had any trouble with it. Seems to me that the ice armor fabric is tougher than the otter canvas. I would agree the otter sled is thicker, put some hifax runners on the trap and you will never wear out the bottom. I dont mean to turn this into a chevy/ford discussion smile.gif

Scott,
This may be a dumb question but what do you mean by getting a free cover? Do they give them out for free at the end of the season?
Thanks!

Ya Hey Der,
Yes, I bought a magnum at the end of the season and they were throwing in a cover. So since I would have gotten one anyway I saved $50+. Very nice house too, I'd recommed them to anyone.

Like the others have said , go to Canvas Craft in Anoka. I bought an Otter Magnum there in December and I really like it. I got everything at once, tow bar, hyfax and cover. They threw the cover in with the purchase of the tow bar and hyfax kit.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
