I am ready to roll! Thursday morning I'll be at it. I can't wait! My dad has been out scouting for me and been seeing birds on several of properties I got to hunt. And they've been gobbling so I am ready!

Get us started elevatorguy.

I will be out a week from Monday for my Minnesota season.

Still seeing turkeys every day on my property.

It looks like we have a solid team with some great hunts coming up.

I was doing a little scouting on my property today.

There were quite a few birds milling around.

I saw 1 "motley crew" hanging together that was interesting.

There was 2 mature Toms, 1 Jake, and a Bearded Hen. Quite the group!

I finally got my submission up. It was a very windy day down there monday. I sat for the first three hours freezing without seeing or hearing anything. I decided to move to a different spot and of course came up on 3 hens. Im not sure if they saw me or not. So I decided to set up about 40 yards further than down from where they went into the woods. At that spot a Tom or Jake cruise by at about 70 yards, I couldn't see the beard. Two hens also came thru by themselves at different times.  After a few hours there I decided to go get some lunch. On my way out I spotted a Tom and a few hens in a field down in a gully.   So after lunch I headed down there to set up. As I was putting out some decoys.  I saw about 6 heads running on the other side of the tree line, busted.  I continued my set up and decided to wait an hour and then started to call real sparingly.  After about a couple of hours he came sneaking back in my set up. I shot him at about 35 yards.  He was probably the one that eluded me last year in about the same location. The birds barely made a peep all day.

Good Luck to you elavator guy tomorrow

Congrats to you Wallydog

It looks like were off to a good start.

Nice bird delzz7.

It sounds like there were quite a few birds in the area you were hunting.

Is there a lot of competition on the public land you hunt on?

Here are a few images from our opening 3 days in Idaho.

Birds were fairly cooperative. Did something on opening day that I have not experienced prior. Called in 3 individual longbeards and whacked them at 0650, 0700 & 1000. 2 "MUTT"s (idaho MoUnTain Turkeys) and a nice marked eastern. Let the jakes walk several times...! My customized strutting jake has rally had the dump beat out of him in the last week. Randy killed the eastern marked bird first as he was perched on top of my stutter. TB's bird answered moments after the first kill and he came strutting in with a hen while Randy's bird laid next to the toppled over jake strutter. I worked my bird in last, he was very cautious swinging around us 180 degrees because of 4 jakes approaching from a different direction, we'd heard them, just not seen the teenagers.

It was indeed a remarkable morning!

Tuesday we moved the turkey "silo" about 150 yards because the toms just wouldn't close the gap into our spread. Upon inspection the landowners logging had all but closed the skids roads to our original setup. Anyhoo whilst dozing at 1 pm I woke to a buzzing sound that was 2 2 year olds spitting and drumming 15 yards from us. 1, 2, 3 and the rest is history. Enjoy the images.

hugonian1 Im not sure how much pressure is there on that piece. I have ran into other hunters out there. I think it helps, that I go the first season, which is during the week.

Wallydog that sounded like an awesome hunt. Great Job.

Why do you call them MUTTS?

Next week can't come soon enough.

Still seeing quite a few turkeys on my property.

The group seems to be getting smaller though.

There has been a lot less gobbling the past couple of mornings but that could be due to the rain and wind.

Good luck hugonian! Hope it picks up between now and then. I know the feeling. Have to wait until may 4th, since i can't take the 3rd off... Really itching bad now. I guess that's why they say patience is a furtue... Because it should be left for the monks. I don't have it.

We are on the board again! I got our third submission this morning. Looks like a 23 pounder and a 10 inch beard. I'll try and get pics on this evening or tomorrow morning. Great hunt for me also. Took a little work to get him but for the first time ever I had one fly down right to me!

Awesome news elevator guy. I as well am excited to hear the story. I saw in the results that some illihunter or something got a bird too for the beard busters... Is he on our side? If so that would be 4.

Great going team!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
