Slabasaurus' Species Thread

IMO .... That's the best fight there is on a flyrod, a bowfin. Congrats Slab!!!!!

I'm not going to disagree with that... took a lot of work to land that one actually.

I wish the photo showed its fins though... definitely had a nice emerald color to em.

After a little bit of research here, and your thread on Bowfin, fishhunter, This was a female.

No spot on the tail, yet had green fins.

Apparently this isn't all that uncommon... the emerald just isn't as vibrant on the females.

I want to catch more of them.

I ALMOST caught my first fish on my spinning gear since ice out... but it was foul hooked so it doesn't count. 8" rock bass hooked outside the lip and on the back with a #5 Shad Rap in perch.

heh.

River's up, casting arm needs a break... tonight, we tie. And re-watch the most recent Game of Thrones.

Made it out this morning... had absolutely no idea where I was going. Stopped off at the quick stop for some coffee and fruit, and hit the road.

Caught some bass... but if an 8" Largemouth is in the running by the end of june ALL of us need to look in the mirror and think long and hard about what we do for fun. Maybe take up lawn darts or something.

This one took me 45 minutes to find a fly that would fit in its mouth, but I finally got it on a zebra midge.

Wow. This river being higher than snoop in amsterdam is starting to get a little old. I've been managing to catch a lot of fish.. but my rough fish spots are all still relatively inaccessible.

Instead of giving myself heatstroke in waders yesterday, I took some time to walk around some streams and rivers around the cabin in search for trout. I found a few, one biiig brown was hanging out in the middle of a pool until he saw me and scampered quickly out of range.

Hopefully I can make it out to a river tonight and catch something new...

Good luck tonight slad. The river being so high has put a damper on doing much fishing on the miss. So I think fishunter and I are going to try to explore new water see what we can find just laying around tommarrow. As for tonight i have togo to my girls softball game.

Nights like last night are just great. Everyone thinks it's too (insert mildly adverse weather condition here) out to fish. I never agree with that kinda mentality. Had the stream/river to myself basically.

Saw carp rolling/flashing, redhorse running, and smallies cruisin up into the shallows of a small backwater area. Tried my new nymphs, flashbacks, and rubber legged deals and not a bite. Well, I had a bite but am not very talented yet so I missed it.

To gain my confidence back a little bit, tied on a bugger. Few casts later and I met this guy.... Finally

14 Black Bullhead Brown bullhead

I'm pretty sure it's a black brown anyway.

my inital impression is that it looks more like a Brown Bully than a Black. Body shape is more in line with a Brown and I can't see any tail cresent. Could you send me a full resolution image? I suspect a ray count will prove it to be Brown (which would be good news for you - seeing as Blacks are much more common).

Heh, I wasn't very positive on this one actually.... does look different from most of the blacks I have caught, but not sure.

Sent you a PM with the direct link to the photo, though the bullhead rolled in the sand while I was grabbin my pic so... well, not sure how helpful the full image will be smile

Thanks!

Confirmed Brown.

Dark Chin Barbel rules out Yellow

20+ Anal Fin Rays rules out Black

Also has "typical" Brown Bullhead shape - kinda Flathead-like. Lacks black bullhead cresent as well - though that doesn't always show up well.

Gratz on the brown bully and the bow. The brown bullys are agressive little fighters. But a good time. The bow was a hell of treat. Mine was the first on the fly and I hope many more to come.

Thanks guys! yeah. Bowfin are awesome, I am pretty happy I have found a handful of spots where they tend to hang out. On the bullhead, I'm just glad I was able to overcome my fear of touching them. smile

Had planned on another weekend of fishing all over the metro, whatever the heck I ate saturday after fishing in the morning put a halt to that idea...

Friday I went down to one of the usual spots with 'bamski, last cast before I moved spots brought in this guy.

phuk my phace...that's a white? i've caught at least a half dozen of those...was counting that front ray in the dorsal ribbon as a spine also. at least OKie has whites. that's 3 missed species this month!!! i'm a horrible fisherman...just turrible.

Nice! Easy to ID the ones with those stripes, no need for spine counting there. It's been at least a year since I've caught one of those, maybe sometime yet this year with the water levels back to reasonable...

Hey Slab great meeting you on the water yesterday. Keep hitting that spot, the carp are there, eventually you'll get one.

We should hit the water some day.

smile You too man. Wish you had better luck, but nice to see you have a solid hookset down (even if they were just rocks...)

I may be back at that spot tonight, though there's another decent carp spot I know of (where the water is clearish).... who knows.

I WILL need to be back there soon because I forgot to take a pic of that black bullhead I landed. Classic.

If you're back there tonight, good luck. I'm off to the river to get rejected by some carpsuckers.

That spot is really hot in the sun... not going back there until it's less than 90 degrees.

The hour I was out last night I did manage to catch some fish. No carp, but the bullies were aggressive. OAF if you look close that fly might look familiar...

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
