Targeting Sturgeon during Walleye Spring Run?

Recommended Posts

A couple of buddies and I are planning on heading up next week. I have made the trip several times before and am looking forward to the return. We are hoping things stay positive and thus far we are pretty optimistic.

We have seen a lot of sturgeon caught and released during the spring walleye run and have also landed a few ourselves. Lots of fun! It's quite a challenge on 8 lb test and jigging gear. We were thinking if the walleyes keep us busy for a couple of days, we might want to take a short break for a couple of hours and target the sturgeon. We would bring our heavy downrigger rods and musky gear, throw on a gob of nightcrawlers on a circle hook, anchor above a hole and take a little break waiting for a slobasaurus to pick it up.

Strictly catch and release of course.

Here is our concern though. Is it legal to target a species which is out of season?

We saw a couple of guys doing just that the last time we were up there. That's why we thought we might give it a try, but we also don't want to spoil a great getaway with a ticket or worse. We know you can't fish sturgeon on the Ontario side of the river at all as they are a protected species there.

You can't fish for sturgeon between May 15th and July 1st. Other than those 6 weeks or so, sturgeon are fair game to angle for. There are certain periods where sturgeon can be kept during that time but overall you can fish them for most of the year.

Please pick up a regs book people. Catch and release is open like it always is. There is no room arguing here.
