My favorite early departure memory was when the new york islanders had like two or three gophers a couple years back. They kept basically forcing them to sign early, i think okposo was one, and their reasoning was "Don Lucia doesnt know how to develop players." I think one of their players or management people had that actual quote! Which I found absolutely laughable, especially coming from the New York Islanders! I felt like writing them and saying-First of all, quit drafting gophers then! And speaking of development, who are u to say someone cant develop players? The Islanders have been pure garbage as long as I can remember! YOU GUYS are the ones that cant develop anybody!

Sorry, off topic a little. I just always love that story...

Bjugstad looks like he could play in the NHL right now.... Unfortunantly, i would be surprised if this isnt his last year. Its bound to happen, the gophs lose everyone early

For now I will just assume Bjugstad is gone, if he decides to come back for one more year I will be one happy camper.

It was Garth Snow talking about Okposo. And I agree Snow, a U Maine goalie, is an I-diot and one of the worst GM's in the NHL. Just look at the Rick "Glass Jaw" DiPietro deal Snow signed.

No kidding. How many years in a row do the Islanders have to finish in the bottom 6 of the NHL before Snow gets fired?

Islanders has Brock nelson draft rights. I hope they don't put the pressure on him to go pro early.

Nelson is having a nice year, you guys better say goodbye now before him and Kristo are kidnapped in the middle of the night by the NHL.

Come to think of it, Knight is having a nice year, he will probably sign with Florida before that ND frostbite catches up with him. Rowney is undrafted and having a big year too, someone will sign him. Forberts development has stalled, probably going to the AHL or Jrs to get back on track. You guys are screwed. grin

Pain pills are killing me. My short term memory is none existent.

Bugstad is only or about to be 19, has a pretty good head on his shoulder, plus a good support staff close to him.(Family)

From what I have heard he is leaning more towards school then money. I hope he stays.

UNO Jr Terry Broadhurst Jr signs with the Blackhawks. He was the second leading scorer on the team.

Last year USCHO had a link in their title banner for early departures. i couldnt find it yesterday. Hopefully they put that back on there.

I heard reports that David Eddy is leaving SCSU. Pretty surprising as I thought he would be a solid player for them next year but IMO is not ready to step up to the big leagues.

Very few of them are ready, sometimes you just get too good of an offer to pass up or you have had enough of school and want to take a shot at the pros.

Surprised that Justin Schultz hasn't departed. I think the Ducks has his rights. He'll be a Jr next year.

I think UND has 4 early flight risk one more than likely with Danny Kristo. The others being Brock nelson, Corbin Knight, and Andrew MacWilliams. I think Denver's Jason Zucker is a probable departure also.

I'm also surprised Schultz hasn't left. He still has an outside shot at the Hobey, but I don't think turning pro changes that.

For Duluth, the only flight risk this year is sophomore JT Brown as an unsigned free agent (Flying Hakstols - bam bam bam). Would love to see him play the Blaiser again.

JT Brown was never drafted? He really flu under the radar. He's been good since day one of his freshman year.

Stud your like a psychic. SCSU Jr forward David Eddy signed with calgary. He was the sixth leading scorer.

Pretty much expected him back and I liked his work ethic. Not one I expected to leave, now I'm concerned about others.

I was supprised about JT when I heard that on the fan last week. He is friends with my daughter and she says he is a very nice person. Heck maybe the wild get him. The have used everybody else this year.

Might as well pick up Connolly and Oleksuk while we are at it too, both undrafted. At the very least add some depth to our AHL team and see if any of them have what it takes for the NHL.

Cripes the whole stinkin UMD squad has been looked at by the Wild. The only exception being Mike Connolly (Sharks, now Avs), who was probably the best college player out of the bunch.

Fonzie's in Houston. Jack and JT were both in summer camp for the Wild. I believe JT also attended Philly's camp. Oleksuk has so far flown under the radar, but someone will take a chance I believe. Very strong on the faceoff circle and has the best nose for goals late in games.

This might sound crazy but Oleksuk just seems like a guy who might make it above the other two. Doesn't have the skill but he just seems to get better every year and has a little more grit in his game, not to mention a little more size.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
