Looking at retirement coming sooner than later and wondering if people can give advice on great walleye lakes in the Ely or Gunflint area to search for cabins. It would be great to get advice here first rather than rely on realtors. Also any reason why a certain lake would be one to target would be appreciated!

Ely area - Vermilion or Birch.

Vermilion is big water with a lot of walleyes and some BIG walleyes.

Birch is really cool lake. Good population of walleyes. Some really cool scenery and probably not as busy as other lakes. I don't think prices are as astronomical as the other lakes in the area.

I bit farther north but Rainy Lake would have to be in the top 5 for me. You will pay big on Vermillion.
