Is it me or are people getting less intelligent on the St. Croix river when it comes to icew thickness and driving. There were lots of full size vih. on the ice today. I measured thickness from 8 to 14inch. We cant forget that this is a RIVER.lol

Agreed....I also don't understand why people feel the need to park two vehicles right next to each other?! Ice sure was poppin when the tahoe drove by eek I have to imagine many of the people driving out haven't done much exploring because there is a LOT of variance in ice thickness!!

I measured 13" fairly close to the MN shore yesterday afternoon. One guy had a full size truck about 100yd from me. The few other groups on the MN side had all walked out from Bayport like me. Majority of the vehicles were by the big shanty town closer to the WI shore. I heard a couple big pops that made me look out for anyone who put their truck through the ice.

14-15 inches of ice where i was...give or take....but yeah some crazy people out there...had a guy with a full size truck dragging his big ice house right behind me...puckered up my "you know what" hole when the ice cracked right under me

Found 15" almost everywhere I drilled today. Saw full size trucks/SUVs out last friday/saturday. Drove out today. Just use a little caution/ try to stay on the beaten paths and you'll be alright. Personally don't feel that iffy about the river usually especially after seeing that many trucks out. Now if you want to do the trek from the park- that's you're own business. But not everyone driving out there is an [PoorWordUsage] like some people try to make it out to be(esp. on 15" of ice).

Turk, I've found 8inchs north of Bayport yesteday while trying to find new untounch access to the river as far as WOstate park. Theres iffy ice up there, carried a cheisl. with me. Nerves were on pins and needles, because there was no sign of anyone ever being there. the ice in Bayport is NICE

Smellson - we must have been very close to you. When that Tahoe came by (way too fast) water blew up our holes ahead of his passing and that one crack had me and my partner unzipping the portie fast - we thought something had happened.

You think that's bad... 2 years ago I was on the St Croix in front of Bayport and fishing on 6" of clear ice, with about .5"-1" of white crusty stuff on top.

There was one Jeep Wrangler out on the ice (which is pushing it imo), so some guy decided to drive his fullsize Chevy 1500 towing a converted camper trailer out onto the ice and right next my portable to ask how thick the ice was!!!

I was stunned and warned him was only 6", which is NOT ENOUGH. "Well I made it this far so it must be enough" he says.

WHAT A MORON.

we were out on bayport st croix driving on the river sat morning too. as long as you drive in bayport the ice will be fine. with the freezing temps we have had its all good. any further north or south of bayport I can't say. I've personally drilled from the king electric plant down close to the dam and it's drivable.

i havent done any evening fishing but for morning being there at 5am the action picks up around 7ish - 11:45am. we were catching channel cats, crappies, sauger & whitebass! what i recommend stay away from the crowd. we were right in the middle of the river... we were fishing about 28 to 31 FOW. Tips if your curious, as for jig head-tungsten weighted jig head color pink glow in the dark size 10 with gulp alive 1" lime green w/white minnow. it worked really good for the crappies and whitebass! my other buddies were using different jig heads with live crappie minnows and did ok too, but there action was not as productive VS mine. overall we did pretty good out there. when the action died down during noon we packed the truck and hit spot to spot. which wasn't bad either caught more fish from spot to spot. which is what I also recommend, when the bite is slow.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
