Icehouse Bob Memorial Cool Cats 2012 Discussion Thread

Mark your calendars for what has turned into one of the highlights of the hard water season!

Host: Borch

When is the event

Sat Jan 14 2012 7am

What will we be catching?

Channel Catfish with an occasional Walleye,Crappie and Rock Bass mixed in

Where is the event?

Cool Cats will be on the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes located near Richmond/Cold Spring MN. Roughly 1.5 hrs Northwest of the Twin Cites. From 94 take 23 west to Richmond and then take 22 south to the lake.

We will be fishing Long Lake, south of Horseshoe Lake. There are two public access to park at for this event. Please monitor this thread closer to the event to confirm current ice conditions.

139.jpg

What should I bring?

First and foremost, a big smile, because you will be using it a lot smile

Typically we use basic walleye gear for catching the cats. We will set up one pole with an Ice Buster bobber or equivalent and a plain red hook with a cut piece of minnow (Fathead or Golden shiner) set just above the bottom, and then jig with the other pole rigged with a jigging spoon/minnow head. JB Lures Rattling Varmint in glow red is favorite among the catters.

A spring bobber has proven to be helpful for the light bite days.

Also as in years past, we will be having a potluck at noon, so bring along a favorite food item to share. Hopefully we can work out frying up some catfish as well.

Bring along the whole family and stay for a couple hours or stay all day.

We will try to get a bunch of holes punched for those that don't have an auger.

Click here to see the recap from last year

Hope to see you all there!

Well mother nature continues to throw us a curveball this winter. Due to ice conditions the Icehouse Bob Memorial Cool Cats gathering location is being changed to Long Lake, Long Lake is located south of Horseshoe Lake on CR 22. After CR 22 turns sharply to the right you will take a right on Brown's Lake road. The public access is a mile or so down the road on the right. It's a short distance, (easy walking distance) to the fishing area from the public access. If that lot fills up there's additional parking across the road at the Brown's Lake access. Long Lake has more consistent ice conditions. It also has a very good catfish population,(plenty of crappies too). See the area map below.

See you there!

Went and did a short scouting trip tonight and found 7 1/2 - 8 1/2" of good clear ice. It was making ice shortly after the sun went down. Caught a dozen nice cats in a little over an hour of fishing. Both jigging and deadsticking. Cats ran from 16-23". It took me about 10 minutes to walk from the access to the area I fished. Saw a couple wheeler out ther running around. Not much traffic there though.

Awesome news Borch! I'm really looking forward to next Sat. Even if the fish don't bite, Eric and Gordie in the same place is reason enough to be there!

Just to keep things honest (I know, fishing and honest? Crazy?) I don't think my chili has actually reached world famous status. It is good, but I haven't gone global with it.

I'll bring the bowls and spoons needed, but can someone give me an estimate of how many I'll need?

I am putting together a crew to come up and chase some cats. The reports of past cool cats get togethers sound like a blast! I have wanted to go for a few years now, but it has never worked into my schedule. This year should work great! Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Thanks for putting this together.

I think the Chili has made "World Famous Status" but mostly for a different reason. wink

Not sure how many folks will end up showing up, but in years past it seems like 50 is a ballpark figure.

The bean build has begun.

Justine that's chilli rocks and it is world famous cause it has to contributes to global warming well in a way I guess wink

See ya on the ice

Go figure.

Make a good move to change the date to earlier in the hardwater season and for the 1st time in years there isn't enough ice to drive to the spot.

grin

Thanks for being on top of this Borch. I'm looking forward to fishing Long. Hit it once with the FishinLogician about 5 years ago and was skunked. Haven't been back since. Have not made it to Cool Cats the past few years. Looking forward to meeting up with old and new friends.

See you all Saturday!

I found plenty of hungry cats on my short scouting trip Saturday so hopefully with a number of people out we'll get on them.

Well guys and gals, it's not much but I found a few items laying around for a big fish contest!

Biggest fish takes it all.

There are only a few rules:

Fish must be a cat

Fish must be measured and photographed by me.

If the fish is over 24" it must be released to qualify.

Contest begins whenever I get there and ends at 4pm.

Here's the little prize pack.

(1) Lindy Grub Getter

(2) Spools of Lindy Ice 3lb Line

(5) JB Glitter Glo jigs

I'll sweeten the deal a bit. As a tribute to Icehouse Bob I'll add a nice set of forceps. Bob was the guy who handed out hundreds of forceps at our Cool Cat events. They always came in handy for unhooking those tough jawed channels. I'll also add some Lindy tackle

Me + Girlfriend (Summer) and fishing themed cupcakes. They're gonna be sweet.

Also, I'll be there on a wheeler +trailer also. Also can be used for shuttlin' people and/or stuff at the end of the night. I prob wont be there right away in the AM but ill be there till dark. And my auger full of gas. 10inch hole so no excuses when the big boys come to the hole....

I was out on long a few weeks back and got 1 nice kitty but fishing a different area.

Should be a blast!

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.

Did you have any luck?     I got a bird but didn’t really do much for pics worth showing.
    • Wanderer
It depends on a lot of factors, I suppose.   I hung on to my last gas auger for a few years after getting into electric but I never used it so I finally sold it.  Haven’t missed it one bit.  You bet it was reliable though.  Still started on the second pull for the new owner.   After trying several options in the electric world, I’m currently settled on a Strikemaster 40V with Liteflight bits.  With 2 fully charged batteries, I fish all day in Canada, cutting 10 inch holes.     What I’ll agree with is, if you search by drilling and flasher sonar, you will probably be more comfortable with the run time of a gas auger.  When you start incorporating GPS mapping, forward facing sonar, and saved waypoints, you don’t need to Swiss cheese every spot you fish.  I can still run through both batteries when the fishing isn’t great but I never feel like I have to count my holes.  It’s more like: Did I need the second battery before the middle part of our fishing hours?  If I still can’t catch fish after running out 2 batteries, it doesn’t matter cuz the fish just ain’t biting.   That’s fishing on the dark side! 😉
