What have you been tying lately?

Another Fly... My take on the Intruder. Not that I plan on steelheading anytime soon, but I think it'll fool a pike or two. I knew once I got to the front of the fly that I'd bulked it up a bit too much, but other than that... I was pleased with my first attempt.

Almost got flooded out on the Zumbro today when they opened up the dam. Water came up very quickly, almost flash flood like. Practically had to swim back across the river to find a spot to get out. It was really too bad, because as soon as I'd figured out the days smallmouth holding pattern, it was time to get out of dodge.

man.. that sucks... do they do that often on the Z?

Every couple days it seems. That's why the clarity is so random on the stretch below the dam, down to ZF and Millville.

ah right on.. so that's why it was probably all high and muddy that day in millsville and crystal clear and low further upstream?

Yep, exactly. It seems water level is already back to normal as of this morning. It's going to be muddy today, but clear by tomorrow or Saturday again I'd guesstimate.

I've been using some sculpin heads lately, they are extremely heavy which means accuracy goes way down, but they do swim very nicely. Good luck on those!

just means ya gotta slow down your casting stroke... with heavy flies.. i really try not to go more than 2 false casts either.. or I completely fudge things up

Plan on hitting some North Shore tribs tomorrow, despite the flood, I heard the hopper action was on.

Nice looking hopper pattern! Tis the season for hoppers right now...

Playing around with propeller styles.. this popper/slider should aggravate a few fish hopefully..

These poppers I made really made for some aggressive strikes this evening.. even the bluegills were out to get it.. pushes a ton of water for its size... lost one to an unknown fish on a quick jump and go... time to tie up some more

I was going to say... if that doesn't catch fish, it'll look good doing it.

I dub thee "Garbage Pile"

DSC02317.jpg

DSC02315.jpg

DSC02316.jpg

It got the name from my initial thoughts on what the fly looks like the first time I tied it. What a pile of garbage. But, the fish seem to like them. I think it's because it could be a small minnow, or a dragonfly nymph, or some other water bug. It's not a perfect match for any, but it mimics each pretty well.

It does have a really buggy look in the water. The fish I caught on it last night were not exactly hesitant... pretty much slammed it.

Might have to copy this one... nice work

It's a scud hook #8. I think the TMC# is 2457. It would probably work well on a non-curved shank too. I just had those on stock. Tonight was all about tying up more backstabbers. I lost my lat one when I was showing Slabs the proper way to set the hook into a stump eek Oh well, gave me something to get on the bench for smile

I did find out that one of my new suppliers is located on the same road as Thorne Bros...so now I get to go there at least once a month! grin

Nice looking streamers.

I've been tying up some Tarpon Toads lately. They are super easy and super effective. All it is is one long piece of rabbit strip tied into a tail about 1.5" long and then wound around the hook shank to make a body. I throw some lead eyes on it and it's done. The whole thing takes about 2 minutes.

I would put some pics up, but I can't get my camera to focus. mad

I think Im in love with articulated streamers.....

They only take me like a half hour or more to tie one. When I loose one it makes me feel like my dog got hit by a car. But man do they just massacre the fish

Nice flies wind -- I love the articulated concept. 2 hrs after tying my first one I hit the long saught after bowfin, have been hooked ever since.

Optic Minnow. It got a bit overbulked, but it's tied on a 3/0 hook wide gap hook. Unfortunately, my CCG hasn't arrived yet, so I can't replicate exactly what Brad Bohen ties up. However, I don't doubt that it will work.

Looking good,

half a saddle and a bucktai later.....

ya my first few got really bulky too. I've learned that "less is more" is the way to go. and to keep the taper narrow as you work up the shank.

Haha no kidding! Don't forget it holds a half hank of flashabou and KF!

However, there were lessons learned while tying this one up. And the main one was definitely less is more. I feel that you really need to limit the amount of material used on the rear half of the fly. Towards the front end, it really started getting jammed. It was so much so, that I was worried I wouldn't be able to get the black bucktail on it.

I think I'm going to go die a few hackles up to try my hand at that. Two feathers at a time is all I'm willing to try.

at that point you may as well just color them with a sharpie

nope.. but i did find a pattern the other day where you just put a couple beads onto the hook shank loosely on a clouser pattern.. i'll try to explain.. tie on your dumb bell eyes.. then thread 2 beads onto the hook shank.. then thread on a smaller bead... at about where the hook point parallels the shank.. build up a bead of thread.. add cement.. and push the smaller bead back over the built up thread so that the bead glues to the thread.. the 2 beads in between will slide back and forth and click while retrieving.. make sense? if not.. i can take a picture of one i tied up the other day

as for the rattles.. i've always seen them in patterns where they cover the rattle in mylar tubing and then tie them to the bend of the hook.. and they just trail behind the hook bend.. seems like a very fragile way to keep a rattle on a fly imho

I wrapped the thin in then covered it with marabou and looped dubbing. The fly looks kinda goofy, but not so bad I guess. I have the feeling the rattle is going to break within a half hour of me fishing it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
