AMES, Iowa - Iowa State sophomore Royce White has been named the Big 12's Rookie of the Week following his strong debut for the Cyclones.

White scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Cyclones got past Lehigh 86-77 on Saturday.

White, a Minneapolis native sat out last season after transferring from Minnesota, was 9-of-15 shooting and added two assists and three blocks in the victory.

White was awarded the honor by a panel of media members who cover the Big 12.

White and Cyclones hit the road Tuesday night when they face Drake.

Looks like he's doing quite well with Hoiberg coaching.

Too bad he couldn't have made it work here in Minnesota as him and Mbakwe would have made a tough duo to stop in the Big 10!!

Royce is going to enter the NBA draft. From the Strib

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State sophomore forward Royce White says he's leaving the school after playing one season and declaring for the NBA draft.

White, the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year, said at a news conference Wednesday that he intended to sign with an agent soon. The 6-8, 270-pound forward from Minneapolis led the Cyclones with 13.4 points and 9.3 rebounds a game this season and helped Iowa State reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years.

White was at his best in the tournament, scoring 23 points with nine rebounds in an 87-71 loss to top-seeded Kentucky on Saturday.

White began his career at Minnesota in 2009-10 but transferred to Iowa State without playing a game. He sat out the 2010-11 season before blossoming into the Cyclones' most indispensable player.

White left the hometown Gophers after a year filled with off-the-court issues. But he instantly became a team and fan favorite in Ames with his outgoing personality and unique game.

Strong and physical, he was also at times the team's best ball-handler. White was the rare big man who could take his defender off the dribble and attack the basket, which helped him become the only player in the country to lead his team in points, rebounds, steals, assists and blocks.

White was also terrible from the foul line in his one season with the Cyclones, shooting just 49.8 percent, and he was upfront about his ongoing battle with anxiety issues.

Nonetheless, White feels he's ready to test himself against the world's best players.

Despite losing White, the Cyclones should be in contention for another NCAA tournament berth in 2012-13.

Iowa State will add former Michigan State point guard Korie Lucious and wing player Will Clyburn, a first-team all-Mountain West pick at Utah in 2010-11 after averaging 17.1 points and 7.8 rebounds. Guard Chris Babb and forward Melvin Ejim also return, and they'll be bolstered by a recruiting class headlined by top-rated power forward Georges Niang — who could help fill White's void in the post

It will be interesting to see how high he goes. I would imagine he'll be a lottery pick, unless he goes off the deep end before the draft.

Man, Iowa State is the island of misfit toys. At least they have some nice pieces.

Chad Ford has Royce the #22 prospect. He should go higher because some of the guys ahead of him will return to school.

Chad Ford must be on dope.... White is one of the most complete players in the draft. If he could shoot free throws he might be the #1 pick! He has some character issues, i wonder if that is dropping his draft status... Look what he did against Kentucky and Uconn and all their NBA prospects. I think he would be a top 5 lottery pick unless there are a bunch of high schoolers and a ridiculous group of foreigners im unaware of...

He might only play half the games since hes afraid of flying laugh

I hate flying as well, I love taking off, and being in the air, the landing part freaks me out. You know, one bad experience.

Saw it in the Star Trib. Its too bad but I can't say it wasn't predictible. I can't imagine how it will work for someone with a mental illness like this to play in the NBA given the travel requirements. Its alot more than a fear of flying, if it was he could probably get over that. This is more of a clinical anxiety disorder and apparently some obsessive compulsive disorder.

He's got a pretty big challenge ahead of him if he wants to have a career in the NBA.

The Houston Rockets suspended first-round pick Royce White for ''refusing to provide services'' required by his contract on Sunday.

I suppose it was inevitable.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
