So how are the representatives from our teams doing.

Matt Read is tearing it up. That is awesome for Bemidji. 2 goals 4 assists for philthy in just 6 games.

Anyone else doing anything.

Ness had a good tryout, then sent to the A.

Craig Smith from Wisc is doing good too, 2 goals, 2 assits.

I think I saw Frattin at least playing.

Always good to see some WCHA'ers doing well.

Frattin hasn't put up any points yet.

I'm hoping Jason Gregiore cracks the lineup for the Jets later this year.

Mixed results with former Duluth players. Very dissapointed in what happened to Stalock. He broke the record for rookie goaltender wins in a singe AHL season with 39. And appeared in relief in one NHL game (win). But last year had a nerve cut after an opposing player stepped on the back of his leg. He had surgery, but still has no feeling in his left foot. He is practicing, but no timetable on a return to game ready shape.

Justin Faulk was up with Carolina for the first 3 games, but was sent down with a -6 rating in 3 games. He scored some points with the AHL affliate and was recently recalled to Carolina.

Mike Connolly (Sharks) and Justin Fontaine (Wild) are both doing well with their AHL affiliates. Connolly has 7 points in 4 games (4G/3A) and leads his team. Fontaine is tied for 2nd in points for the Aeros with 5 points in 6 games (2G/3A). May be awhile before either of them sees the bigs, but I would not be surprised for a rookie year call up, especially MConn.

I heard former Badger Jake Gardiner was doing very well during pre season and has played 6 games for Toronto this year with a couple of helpers.

Frattin just got sent down - "to gain some confidence"

Matt Read has been sidelined with an upper body injury for a few games now - whatever that means. He has been tearing it up for the Flyers. His time on ice in all situations is unreal for a rookie in the NHL. He is getting quite a bit of powerplay time and penalty kill time too.

I see Cade Fairchild just got called up by the Blues. Could make his NHL debut soon.

Justin Faulk is still up in Carolina. He recorded his first pt on Sunday, an assist.

Former Badger Craig Smith 7,13 - 20pts in 25

Former Beaver Matt Reid 9,5 - 14pts in 21

Former Badger Jake Gardiner 0,7 - 7pts in 23

Former inmate Matt Frattin 2,3 - 5pts in 22

Former Badger Branden Smith 0,2 in 3 games.

I think Leddy has 2,14, -16pts in 26 but he is considered a 2nd player.

Is it just me or is wisc producing the best NHL rookies this year. wow, you would think they would have been better last year.

Kind of a rookie year for Ryan McDonagh. He got called up late last year. Last I looked he was 6th leading Plus/minus defender in the league.

Matt Read, my goodness. What a player he's been for Philly. 45GP 15G 16A 31Pts +12. He is 25, but man what a start to an NHL career. I was curious to see how a guy like Backes did in his first year. A few more games and 10G 13A 23pts.

Although he's not a rookie, good to see Al back in action after that nasty cut nerve on the back of his leg. Currently on a rehab assignment in ECHL. Still hoping to see this guy in a San Jose uni sometime next year.

Not discounting Read (he is good) but I'd still take Backes over him.

Backes first season with the Blues was a year removed from the Blues having the worst record in the NHL.

Here's a Justin Faulk fight on Youtube, his first apparently. He's starting to really improve out there and score some goals too. GP 44, G 6, Pts 15, -8 is his current line. Still 19 yrs old.

Anyone notice MConn playing for the Av's last night? He was recently traded from San Jose to Colorado. Fitting that his first NHL start would be in the building of his last college game. Mike had a few shots on a goal and a penalty.

Hoping to see more of this guy in the future.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
